View Full Version : Considering replacing LS6 with LS7. Can I still use the headers?

I am considering all the costs associated with replacing the LS6 in my 69 Camaro with an LS7. I only cannot figure out if the LS7 oem head exhaust ports are in the exact same position of a stock LS6. I would like to reuse my headers.
Anybody know?
They should so long as they are 1-3/4" primaries, but the LS7 has D shaped ports and some feel that it's very important for the two ports should match

Trey,
Doesn't the LS6 block have D shaped exhaust ports as well?
No, roundish port.

The LS7 is clearly D shaped.
The L92 uses LS7 intake ports and LS6 exhaust ports. LS7 intake ports are more rectangle than cathedral like all the other LSx.

I should be OK then. Almost all of the aftermarket C6Z headers for the 427 are round port anyway. Thanks Trey.
Yep, there's only like two or three companies making D port headers. The only thing else I see as a potential issue is that your headers aren't stepped to 1-7/8" primaries. That engine would really like the bigger tubes. The 1-3/4" will perform well for you though and you can always change them later if you desired. You're welcome

I called SW Fri and they can make them custom, like to know who are the "two or three companies making D port headers" tho? Using Hookers for my LS7, which have the round or oval ports. Minimal encroachment on one edge and for the most part fit OK. Still looking for 1 7/8 D ports off the shelf for a 69 Camaro. Any info would be mucho appreceo.

ATS was going to do "D" ports... but found out that they make NO difference in power production or efficiency.
The three companies are LG Motorsports, Kook's, and some American Header company. I can't remember their name exactly. They are new but are supposedly making quality pieces. Now here's the bad part. These are all headers for the Z06, nothing else. Sorry.
I tend to agree with you and what ATS found chicane. I haven't done any thorough testing or anything like that though. I just know some people are sticklers about port shapes matching up. Of course I am dealing with vette people. When they go off on the whole D port headers or not for the new Z06, I wonder how many of these vette owners went to the same trouble to get D port headers for their D port L98 cars.
I say cover the port using a quality header that's proven to make power and go down the road smiling.

Well... Katech and Pratt&Miller dont think it is a necessity... so I would consider, that is all the testing I would ever need.
OK... that and the guy that built the headers for the C6R... is the same that ATS employed to design and build theirs. :smoke:
haha yeah I had no idea that Katech and Pratt & Miller didn't make their headers D shaped. I'd have to say they know what they are doing.
