I gotta dig into it more. There might be some room there. I just don't want it to look all hacked. And don't worry Ryan, that intake tube ain't going nowhere. It substantially improves the car's coolness factor. As a jalopy it needs all the cool it can get.

Jason I think if I use countersunk black screws in strategic areas it should be fine.

Another update...my radiator and electric fans are done. I mounted it the best way I knew how with some modified brackets from Lowes and a few radiator mounting zip ties at the bottem. Should hold. However...I do have a dilemma with my intake tube, see below.

Radiator is a Champion from ebay (I know, stop you're laughing I'm poor) and the fans are from a Lincoln Mark VIII.

As you can see the intake tube (compliments of Ryan Barichello, thank you again my friend) is impactiing the shroud on the fan. The line scribed on there is a ball park estimate of what will need to be trimmed to make it work. And yes, the tube should just barely clear the fan blades. My question to you is...should I trim this away and fit the tube in or is it going to look like a hack job and I should try something else besides the intake tube? Perhaps forego the Lincoln fans and go with thinner ones?

Hi Tony,

You can
1)use a heat gun, heat up that section of shroud and roll it down just enought to clear
2) redo the radiator mounts to move it closer to the radiator support.
3) shorten the connection at the tube to throttle body. ie: push the tube farther in closer to throttle body. You can trim tube is necassary. Shorten boot at throttle body by 1/4" and slide on farther.

All good suggestions. I will see if there is some real estate in that tube to trim it up some. Might be cutting it close (no pun intended). I'll be at it tonight and post pics.

By the way, my harness is at Wait4meperformance getting edited right now and Mike Norris is currently doing the tune on my PCM.

It looks like you have some room to cut both ends of the sleeve and the end of the tube.

Cut the big end of the sleeve to slide it on the TB farther. Cut the small end to allow the tube to slide closer to the tube bend.

I cut the end of my tube at a slight angle with the short side on the inside radius. This allows the tube to be roatated aft and give more room at the point of the shroud that is causing interference.

I'll give you guys a brief update of where I'm at……thanks for asking by the way. :)

My family and I moved last month into a new home. The house we moved into is my parent’s house which they no longer need but we badly do. We weren’t in any financial trouble or anything just couldn’t sell our current home due to be being “upside/down” and ended up having to rent it out. My folk’s house was a great opportunity since it’s about twice the size of our old house and in a much nicer neighborhood. They don’t need that big of a house anymore and I have three boys that are getting bigger by the day. What is complicating things however is that we ended up renting our house out a lot faster than we had planned and had to move into the new house before my folks had a chance to find a new place and move out. Thankfully they are out in Arizona till May so that saves us a lot headaches….if you know what I mean. LOL. So currently the car (and all my tools and parts) are in a storage lot about a mile from me. I will not have an opportunity to work on the car until they get back, find a place, and move out. When that happens is anyone’s guess.

You may have read that GM is giving us a profit-sharing check this year (which I have mixed feelings about, but that’s another discussion). If it's what I'm hearing, then it'll be more than enough to finish it. We also got good news on our tax returns so after years of money being the problem, now the one caveat standing in the way is a place to work on it; I got the money, just no garage…..yet. It’s always something.

No doubt about it these days, it's always something. Glad to hear you got some more space for the growing boys.

I was looking at your fan/intake interference picture earlier. I was able to trim the "depth" of my MarkIV shroud just enough to get the space I needed between the rad and water pump snout. You may be able to do that as well if Carl's recommendation doesn't get you enough space, but I think it will.

Thanks Jeff, I may have that part worked out but there is still the issue of replacing my alternator which I've learned won't be sufficient for the Mark VIII fan.

Ken, thankfully all the big stuff is done on this car so I don't need as much space as I had to finish it. My old garage was 20X20 and I will surely miss it but the new garage is a standard 2 car and should be enough to see it through the finish line.

And 1 year later…we’re back. A small update to share on my project. Our move into the new house was a complicated one, we didn’t assume full control until August and then my son’s football season began (I am an assistant coach). 4 days of practice a week, games on the weekends for 3 months, coupled with overtime at work it was nearly impossible to get in the garage. Then the holidays came and well, you know how that goes. So here we are, January 2012 and I am FINALLY back in the garage.

Here’s what remains;

- Limited exterior work; bezels, glass, chrome, lamps.
- All interior work, seats, panels, wiring, gauges, dash, sound deadener, headliner.
- Undercarriage; all plumbing for brake lines, all brake work, subframe connectors, plumbing for fuel line, gas tank, exhaust, finalize
front suspension.
- Driveline; finalize cooling system, computer and harness, fire it up, tuning, front end alignment.

….and that’s it.

I will be hard at work for the next five months then it goes down to Mike Norris in Indianapolis where he will take it the last 10 feet. He is going to do the driveline finalization; fuel system, computer, harness wiring. He’ll get the car running and then tune it on the Chassis Dyno. Finally, he will be responsible for the exhaust system. I have an appointment for Saturday, May 12th. This is my first REAL deadline I’ve ever had on this car which gives me what I think I’ve needed on this project all along; a goal to shoot for. Another first is I now have an insulated garage (albeit smaller) which will help me work through the long/cold winter; another thing I’ve needed all these years.

I don’t have much to show you in the way of build pictures right now, maybe in a couple weeks, but here’s a pic of my ’67 tail lights that were donated by Mike Redpath at Musclerodz. Thanks again Mike. Another shows my new working space. I do have one question about these tail lamps for all of you….they are OEM and so is my tail panel yet the studs on the right side lamp do not match up to the mounting locations on the tail panel. The left side lines up a lot better but some grinding and finesse will be needed to fit it in. The right side looks like it will require a bit of cutting and fabrication. I am totally surprised by this, this is the last thing I ever imagined I would have an issue with. Anyone else run into this problem?

your certain a factory tail panel? I have seen this problem on aftermarket 69 tail panels. minor slotting required to fit. also make sure you do not have them flipped either. pics?

Mike, I am going by how we determine right side of car and left side of car. Right side of car is passanger side in today's world, maybe it was something different back then. I will try them the other way just to be sure. Like I said the drivers side lines up ok, just a little finessing. The Passanger side the bottem holes line up but the top holes on the tail panel appear to be 1/4 inch too high. This tail panel was purchased at GM SPO in the late 80's and is a Genuine GM Part.

Sparky, I think I missed the boat on Power Tour. Even if I was ready (and had the funds and vacation time to do it) pretty much all my friends here have "been there, done that" with Power Tour and I would be one pretty lonely guy. LOL.

One small update to share; I received my gas tank last night. It’s a Ricks Tank.

This is actually my first shot seeing one in person. I’ve been seeing them in pictures now for years and it’s evident that pictures don’t do it justice. The level of fabrication and quality is literally jaw dropping. It’s almost a damn shame that I have to stick it under the car. You guys that are contemplating buying one…stop contemplating and do it. Thank you to Ricks for giving us such amazing products for our cars.

Also, a big thank you to Larry Callahan; this one came out of MotiV8r. This was my last Big Ticket item that I needed, now I just need to snap it all together. .....yeah, easier said than done.

Juggling a family and all the commitments that go with it whilst trying to restore a car has been one of the greatest challanges I've ever met. I was 30 when this began, I am now 41.

But I'm happy to say that there is no more "light at the end of the tunnel". We've reached the end of the tunnel. Only a few more feet to go. :)

I installed this last night. This is the coolest gas cap out there for 1st gen Camaros. ...and yes, gas caps can be cool. Special thanks (once again) to Mr. Larry Callahan and also Bret Voelkel at Ridetech. For those who don't know, the center pops out (like a boat cap) and also locks. For my buddies with 1st gens, these are made by Precision Coachworks and can be found at Ridetech at; www.ridetech.com. Very easy to install. Thank you to both of them for yet another kick ass component for our first gen Camaros.

Well, anyway, I have a project update. I found a radiator and fan setup for a 1968 Camaro with LS1 conversion. $600. Superior Radiator in Mt. Clemens, Michigan. A few people I know have used them and they loved them. The build quality is comparable to a similar BeCool setup but less than half the price (BeCool wanted $1350 for the same kit). All aluminum and the craftsmanship is impeccable. Highly recommend. The guy sells enough of them that he was able to tell me what hoses work. Can't wait to bolt her in. What clamps are people using these days? I've seen those Gates shrink clamps, dunno about those. Any suggestions?

I'm using them on my Nova. They work as advertised. Nice and tight with no leaks.
They are one use only so buy a lot of extras.

It's great to be back guys. My life got sidetracked into the world of Youth Football. I started my own organization (www.ctchargers.net) and it nearly consumed me for 5 straight years. But that's a story for another time. I finally stepped down in December and am now picking up the pieces of an old life. I miss this stuff. My oldest is 17 and has been bugging me to get the car running. So it was perfect timing. I got a lot of catching up to do. I need to find out what new parts are out there. Great to see you guys again too!
