View Full Version : 4.5" backspacing on a 17x8 in the front - 68 Camaro?

I've heard a 4.5" backspacing will rub, but I saw a few people running a 4.5"bs on a 17x8 in the tire fitment database. I want to be sure, since I am going to order the wheels soon and they only offer the 17x8s in 4.5" backspacing.

I'm going to be running a Toyo Proxes 4 tire in 245/45ZR17 size.

For the rears I am going to run a 17x9.5 with 5.5" bs with a 275/40ZR17 tire, so I don't think I'll have any issues there.

How low are you going to go in the front? It may rub, I have 18x8 on my 67 with a 5" bs and it works fine now but when i first got the wheels, they had a 4.5" bs and rubbed so I sent the wheels out and had the bs changed to 5" with a 245/40/18.

Use 5" backspacing.
4.5" may rub.

It should fit but you might want an alignment with 1/2* negative camber and some button head bolts for the top inner fender. I have 245/50-16 on the front on 16x8 with 4.5" BS and a 1/4" spacer and it all works fine.

I'm running 2" drop spindles on the car. Is the main place it rubs the fender lip area, or is it on the inner fender somewhere? If it is the inner fender I'll just notch it so it clears.

The wheels I want are only available in a 4.5" backspacing, though.

BTW, very nice car man!

You really don't want those wheels. Their customer service really stinks.

Check out some of the Vintage Wheel Works stuff:

Same look you are after but better quality and service all the way. And you can get the proper backspacing and forget all of the hassles of making too much or too little backspacing fit.

Unless I can get them to donate a set that isn't gonna happen. I can't afford to drop that much coin on a set of wheels with it being a donation based project.

I will rub on the inner fender well bolts (unless using button heads) and a little on the inner fender well itself, a little!

I have 17x8 4.5 bs all the way around. Only rubbing was the rear fender bolt (+caster related). Well, I also hit the subframe at full lock.
