I have recentlly aquired a "free" 80's 2 door malibu. I got it b/c I wanted to take the frame and get it powdercoated to use under my 88 monte carlo ss. I have researched this and it is the same frame except for the trans crossmember, but I have that under control. I have some questions that I need assistance on....

1) Before I even think of doing this...how do I determine if the frame is straight. Its not too rusty but im afraid of it not being straigh.

2) How would you all go about taking the body off the frame?...any one need a malibu body??

3) once it is off...should I ox the frame where I can...or is that not worth it?

1)Pick some pairs of holes, gusset mounts, ends of crossmembers, or other locations that are opposite each other along the frame rails. Measure front to rear from a forward location on one rail to a rear location on the other rail, then repeat diagonally across in the opposite direction so your measurements cross in an 'X' pattern. If you can't picture that think of your frame as being like a door frame in your house laid down flat. Measure bottom left to top right and bottom right to top left. If those measurements are the same your frame is square.

2) The body can be lifted off the frame in quite a few different ways. Use a 2 post or 4 post lift. Lift with an engine hoist on each end. Jack it up with multiple jacks & put 4x4s across sturdy cribbing or saw horses (heavy ones, not Home Depot specials), then roll the frame out from under. Before you lift take as much weight off it as you can. Doors, seats, etc.

I would suggest that you check the length of the front frame horns. I would swear reading somewhere back in my dirt-track days that the 'bu was 2" shorter forward of the steering box. I would just hate to see you go through the work and have the core support too close to the firewall.
I have loved SS's since they hit the road, and hope to have one of my own one of these days. Good luck.

Malibu frames are 2" shorter than the Monte in the front
