I have a '68 Camaro that I am getting ready to build. Right now I am in Afghanistan and will be coming home for the Thanksgiving holiday. While I am home, I plan on getting it out to a body shop to have it worked on while I am back here in Afghan.
In my garage, I also have a 2001 SS that was wrecked just before I came over. The the motor and tranny are ripe for the picking so my delima is:
Is it worth pulling the motor / tranny to put in the '68? Or should I just sell it? Longer down the road I don't think I will stay with the LS1.
Any opinions? I am just trying to sort out my plans because I will only be home for about two weeks before returning to Afghanistan and want to have plans for both cars when I get there.

With the expense of making the LS1 work - brackets/mounts/fuel inj etc you might as well just put the motor you are planning on keeping long term. It will save you money in the long run. Then you can sell me your wrecked SS so I can use the LS1/6speed :)

What are you planning long term?
Once you start playing with the LSx they are addicting..
Thank you for your service ss.
I would first ask just how badly is the SS wrecked? If it's totaled, I would yank the drive train to use in the 68 and sell the rest of the car for parts. If it's not too badly damaged you could potentially fix it and sell that one.
Whatever you do, I would recommend you go that route first so as to not go down the same road twice. If you want your 68 LS powered, do it now even if it costs more and takes longer than simply going with a traditional SBC.

First, Thank you all for your support.
As for the '01 with the LS1 --
I can't decide if I want to go LS7, or BBC. I know there is a huge difference there, but I am thinking selling the '01 car and / or motor for money to get the frame and body right. I just want to make sure that I do that right from the start.
I was really leaning toward BBC, but looking at some of the LS7 stuff out there I am leaning that way too.
The '01 was not that badly damaged, but the insurance company called it a total because the rear frame rails were bent. It is really not that bad. The motor has a spec'd LG G5x4 cam in it and the tranny has a Yank PT4000 in it. That thing would run like a raped ape and it drove it everyday getting 16mpg around town. I really hate to get rid of it, but I think the money will be helpfull.
I swear I am worse than a woman looking for shoes and a purse.

Normally I'd say let it roll and do the full swap, but since you are on the fence and there is nothing worst than living with something you will regret daily. I say pass and sell the 2001. Then use the money to build it the way you want it.
Some advice, is you have the space, parting out will get you more money.
Thank you for your service to our country and thanks for that disturbing mental image of you in high heels....

Well you know they got to match my purse.
I wouldn't bother one bit trying to get a BBC into the front of a 4th gen. To me that's a complete waste of time simply because of how awesome you can make a Gen3/4 that will bolt right in with no fab work. The only thing the BBC has over a Gen3/4 is how it'll sound.
One other thing to consider is that while you love the SS(and hey, I love my WS6) the 68 isn't something you come across everyday. You can always buy another 4th gen later. Of course if money was no object, I'd say keep them both. It's a tough call, I know, I am constantly debating what to do about my TA as I have no money for it right now and it sits. I have to keep telling myself to get done with school, then worry about the TA. By then I should be able to park the WS6 as well and get something else to abuse.

I am really thinking about an LS7 after looking around.
For the '01. I think the decision is made to sell sell sell. I am going to use the money to get the body and frame right. I love that thing, but it is replaceable, and like you said it's not often you come across a '68.
