Now that I've morphed into a fat slob sitting around not doing chit except for banging out proposals for clients, I decided to buy a mountain bike and get a little exercise in between work and working on the T-Bird! I bought a Cannondale F5/16" frame! I know nothing about mountain bikes and, from the little I've been able to distill from friends that do, they tell me I should have bought the Giant bike(better components!)but I'm pretty happy and I like the way it rides! Besides, I figure once I get good enough to tell the difference I can always sell it and upgrade or just upgrade the parts that need upgrading since the frame seems to be pretty well built!

Awready did and DAMN am I out of shape!

Looks more like a jump/trick bike than a cross country mountain bike. Cannondales are well made, but they use a lot of their own parts that aren't standardized so you can't always upgrade to aftermarket parts.
Check http://www.mtbr.com/ for bike reviews.

I've had a Giant for about 3 years now...I think it's called the Recon.
Anyway, it still works great after A LOT of pretty hard trail riding. (You'd think I'd be in better shape:hmm: )
Just FYI in case you go that route. They make a good, quality bike.
I'm actually about to head out on mine. Burn off some of those happy hour beverages...

Sweet! I bought a Gary Fisher a few months ago. Bikes are awesome, especially when you start learning and talking about all the engineering and technology that they are using nowadays! Have fun!

My friend, JonnyR, he's a member here but lurks mostly, just bought a frame from a company called Intense! He's building a downhill race bike and he says that it is one of the best engineered suspensions he's seen!

One day I'll need a bike like that!:)

One can build a respectable motor for what he will have in that bike.

All the bikes mentioned are good bikes.Get out and ride what you have until you have something better.
It is the rider not the bike. Dual suspension will save your back if you ride rocky or technical stuff. Stay away from Santa Cruz - I have broken 2 Blurs and just ride cross country. Maverick and Ellsworth make some very nice bikes and still in the good old USA - get ready to spend 3-4k.
SRAM drivetrains are cheaper and just as good if not better than shimano. Also more intuitive if you build your own bikes...

I had a Yeti when I was in Japan. Still over there somewhere. Haven't rode since then.
If you wanna get in shape you should break out the surf board ot of that bag behind your bike. I lived in Puerto Rico for two years and San Dog for 1 and surfed all the time, litterally. That was some good excercise.

INTERBIKE - the SEMA of the bike world.......
Your bike will be just fine. It will be amazing just how fast you get into shape. I've got a Klein collecting dust that I need to get my chunky butt on.
I guess next year we can have an all different "run through the hills" !

I was wondering who was gonna notice! LOL! I used to surf semi-professionally in my "younger" days when I use to surf for the NSSA/Huntington High School! After I got out of high school I was sponsored by some manufacturers but I started getting into music and moved to L.A. and got into the music scene and didn't have time to surf! The longboard you see in the pic is one that I ride very rarely! I like to ride shortboard so I own a couple of competition boards(potato chips) that I used when I was surfing competitevely but don't float me very well anymore(Instead of surfboards there more like submarines!) Now I surf a 6'5" Channel Islands board! I love that thing but I don't get to get out much since I don't live near the ocean like I did in Huntington Beach!
Did you notice the skis?!?:naughty:

I just decided to get into downhill bikes and bought an Intense M-1 used. I wanted the new Intense M-3 but the $7300 price tag scared me off. Some of the downhillers don't have much sense but damn, they are fast and crazy.

Are Channel Islands made in Ventura? I would like to get stationed at the Navy base there, there is an instructor job I want. I was at the same school for the Navy for about four months in Port Hueneme years ago and it was a blast.
When I was in San Diego later on, we would drive up there to surf, through LA (Aghhh!). I cruised up through Ojai alot wishing I was on my Buell or in a sports car instead of a truck.
I bet the biking there would be pretty gnarly. Also, the water is flat in the Gulf of Mexico.

The company is based in Santa Barbara but I think most of their boards are made at automated factories! I used to be totally against this as I got to work with some incredible shapers when I surfed competitively but now that I rode this board I have to say that they have perfected pretty much every aspect of it! Perfect balance and rocker! Just enough entry angle so that when you get into a tight situation you just put a little weight on the front of the board and it rockets you out of harms way! Loose but not tail slidey! Definitley holds in point break walls and great for fast, down the line surfing as well as mushy surf! Pretty much a jack of all trades!
Ventura is super fun but if your not from there they can be complete A-holes! Be careful if you decide to surf the Strand! Heavy localism!
