Time to put some power into my '70 Ford Fairlane.
The original engine wasn't too bad, except is was SLOW (17.64 at 77 mph.. lol)
And the oil leaks kept getting worse and worse. At idle the oil light would come on. Is that bad?
I can't stand oil leaks so it was time for action..

Anyone in SoCal need a 302 and C4 trans core?
Best Of Show then spent 4 days scraping the engine bay, degreesing it and then we sprayed it low gloss black. The underside of the whole car was scraped clean (we found zero rust) then coated in black undercoat. With the new rear, alum driveshaft and new tranny it should look very sanitary when done.
The car is a driver, not a show car but it will still be pretty nice with an old school vibe.
After I run 11.80s a couple of times I might put in a TKO600 and AC system. Maybe a trip to Chris Alson for some Total Control stuff.
Then I will sell her and start the next project, trying to figure out what that might be. 70 Monte Carlo?
Anyways, I post progress pics as I go. The full story will be covered in PHR.

I will next week.. We just scubbed it down, cleaned it off and shot it low gloss SEM paint (same as the hood). Nothing super fancy, just clean.
The new engine is the 408 I just built. It put out 550/530 on the engine dyno.

Looking good Steve.
I really like the budget no over the top frills projects that you guys are taking on. I am looking for something like that myself.
I certainly enjoy looking at all the "pretty" parts but I am starting to come to the realization that driving is a lot more fun than cleaning.

Ford power steering is hopeless.. that ram-deal is just junk. I put a new one on to stop leaks but it will still be sloopy.
Gotta do a rack/pinion conversion I guess... GM is SOOOOO much easier..

Today we installed the March pully system. I would just like to say that the kit lined up perfectly and fit like a glove. Not an easy task on a Ford engine. Nice to have serpentine belts.

We also installed the Hughes trans and a few other things. Just need to install the cooling system, wire up the engine and install the ratchet TCI shifter. Learning a LOT about Fords...

Wow.
That car has come a long way..
Very clean/well orgainized engine compartment.
I'm telling you the low or no bling factor is the way to go.
It sure makes driving more enjoyable not having to worry
about the weather/rock chips/bugs etc......
As far as your race is concerned heres what you need to do.
Get Hunkins to drink about 3 Red Bulls before the race.

No problem with the bling one.. it was left over from Penny (came with the AFCO radiator). I'm worried with hood clearance so we will see if it fits. If so I will run the bling version since it's new and this car is supposed to have a more traditional feel to it.
Total Control makes a bar that's close. I might take the car up there for some measurements.
Yea, I wish I could keep it to but I don't have the room to store a bunch of cars and money from this car will fund th next project. I need a warehouse! lol

three-inch stainless... I thought they were going to do coated steel but when I got there they had this ready to go on.

Yea, they are Earl's PRESSURE MASTER gaskets.. best $60 I've spent. I got them from Summit.
They are very good and have zero leakage, highly reccomended. You also don't need to use any RTV or other sealer.

A Canon 20D ... the newer version is the 30D which you can find sold as Refurb for $800 (just the body).
The replacement to that is the 40D which will set you back about $1000.
It's Canon's pro line of cameras. However, the most important thing is a GOOD lens. I use Canon lenses with EIS and my wide angel (used in those shots) is a Tokina 11-24 unit that retails around $500.

Mine was in decent shape to begin with so it wasn't that hard, Torinos are super cool cars and great deals for people wanting to get into a hot rod on the cheap (well, at least cheaper than a Camaro or Mustang)

The 496 big-block Chevelle has a big advantage in hp and tq.. so far it has me beat at the drag strip.

Pulled the bench seat today to install the Procar Ralley bucket seats. The best part was that the floors were nearly factory fresh. Only a tiny spot of surface rust near the back.. not even pitted yet. The car must of led a pampered life somewhere. Also install the new retro gauges in the dash along with a tach on the steering column. Going to touch up the surface rust areas with POR-15 and then put down sound deadner. Will also use the Second Skin door kit I won on the doors.
Oh, and the new Hughes trans is in with the upped 3200 stall converter.

I think the key to any project is coming up with an overall plan and then making the details fit as you do the build. Also, know that sometimes "less is more" and realise that a cool detailing idea may be good on its own but when combined with a bunch of other "cool ideas" just becomes too much.
The rest is just trying to tie stuff together. When you're done you want to people to like your car, but not be able to point out a specific reason WHY they like it. The comments should be along the lines of "i just looks right" or "it just seems to flow together". You don't want the car to look like a conglomeration of parts, but for it to look like single cohesive object (wow, all them big words... lol)
The Fairlane has been cool since it has let me do something with an old school flare which is 180-degrees away from my Camaro. I'm going to miss it when I sell it to buy the next project.

Michael
I will get some today..
The basic idea was 1x1 angle iron cut to the right length (found by holding he seats in the car) a hole was then cut in the top of the iron and the front pieces were bolted in place. We then put the seat in place, made sure it was square and tack welded them to the floor. We then repeated the proceedure for the rear. After all four were tack welded in place we fully welded them down. The rears were 2-3 inches long and the fronts were about 1-inch long due to the shape of the floor.
The sold brackets but they were $120 and took 4 weeks to get. This cost me about $3..

that could be pretty cool...have you ever considered a early 70's monte carlo? ive always wanted to see a pro-touring build on one of those...a road race version could be pretty sweet as well...and i definately like the theme of keeping with a chevy, even if this is my favorite ford to date!
on another note, since soo many guys are interested in how you detail an engine bay, any chance of a little segment filled with pointers and tips as to how to really clean up the engine bay and get rid of the cluttered look? seems like it could be something useful across the board regardless of the type of build you are doing!
my last comment is actually a question, what camera/ lense/ flash setup do you use? ive been into photography for a few years and part of my senior project is a portfolio, my principal has a sick gt350 with a fair amount of work done on it and i wanted to shoot that for my main piece, any insight into how to get the best results, mostly concerning lighting, would be a huuuge help!
thanks for reading my rant steve!

p.s. any pictures of the guages/ seats/ interior since the update?
When you're done you want to people to like your car, but not be able to point out a specific reason WHY they like it. The comments should be along the lines of "i just looks right" or "it just seems to flow together". You don't want the car to look like a conglomeration of parts, but for it to look like single cohesive object (wow, all them big words... lol)
My friend Kye Yeung who owns European Motor Car Works always says that. Kind of funny to hear you say it too. His personal cars that he has built are insane. Everything is perfect. When I look at his '65 Vette it just looks right. His 1962 Bel Air is out of this world, yet the interior is so simple.
Not sure if you have heard or even read the new Velocity car magazine (www.velocitymag.com (http://www.velocitymag.com)), but they interviewed Kye and he says, "The attention to detail is everything. When you can't put your finger on why the car's so nice, that's the ultimate."
His '67 Vette and '62 Bel Air are amazing in person. Steve you should do a article on one of his Chevys if he lets you. He normally turns down car magazines because he is modest.
Here is a pic of his '62.
http://velocitymag.com/Contest/ContestEntry.aspx?ContestEntryID=51
His newest toy is a Ford GT with a whipple. Saw int on Saturday. One word to describe it, insane.

Hood pins are IN... they actually add to the looks of the car. Unlike regular, ugly IMO, scuff plates..

They use the AFCO alum hood pin kit and replace the crappy scuff pad.
If you're gonna run pins these look, by far, the best.

Steve,
We want updates on the Fairlane.:bananna2: Dart old news. haha

Worked on the Fairlane today..
Fixed some mechanical junk in prep for the track.
Also did a bunch of little stuff. Painted the new dash cap and kick panels to match the blue interior.
Painted the wheels a graphite color since the raw alum was too hard to keep nice:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Installed Modo Innovations pedal covers. They didn't make ones for the Fairlane but the Mustang ones fit great with only minor trimming of the e-brake pedal needed. Also put in new carpet over the fresh sound deadener.

Saturday I clean her up and then I'll do a nice smokey burn out and post the video on here.. :)

Can't wait to see your next project.
Ever thought about doing a LS1 "cosworth" vega clone or possibly ecotec powered? Seems like I've seen a few of these cars available for a reasonable dough. A bucks down build using "salvage" or "recycled" parts sounds like a good read.

I think if it were done right, which there is no doubt that you would do, it would have a pretty good following. If nothing else it would be a pretty neat "retro" build.... LS1, 6 speed, possible mini-tub, tasteful 17" wheels, other wise stock appearing.
When you say that it depends on who you do it for what do you mean? PHR or Super Chevy or ?
Anyway.....nice talking to you. Can't get enough of PHR, love what you guys are doing.

Work continues...
Last week was spent installing the AODe computer-controlled overdrive trans. It's "almost" done.
Next week I will be bolting in a Vintage Air Conditioning system. Given the extra draw of the system I also decided to upgrade the radiator from the "bargain" unit in it and the mech fan to this:
Flex-a-lite unit
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
It's a pretty nice piece and I really like the look of it.

Radiator is in.. fairly simple, only had to do a little trimming for fitment. Keeps the car right at 180..

The Fairlane ships next week to Yancy in Pidgeon Forge. Should be at the RTTH event.
The overdrive tranny was a bear but it's in and working good. Also finished up installing the Vintage Air system. Just need to figure out why the tach stopped (fuse?) and do some last minute detail work. Oh, also installed fresh back tires since I sorta melted the old ones. lol

yea.. right... ;)
Actually I had planned on putting a stocker AM unit back in for the old school vibe. I even bought a refurb'd on eBay. When I pulled out the barely working aftermarket one I found some idiot had cut the dash 1/4 inch on each side to fit the Sony unit. DAMMIT!!!
Rather than cut the dash further I replaced the unit. Unfortunatly nobody makes this size of two-knob stereos exect this one I found at Pep-Boys for $40. It's crappy but it does have one redeaming feature. It has an audio in jack for an MP3 player! Hell, my 05 GMC didn't even have that.
