Alright - forgive all the questions but i'm a mopar guy building a 63 Impala.... owner wants a Overdrive automatic... what should I go with ? 4L60E ? it will be going behind a fuel injected 502 making 540hp and 570tq...
My buddy swears by the newer GM autos - I have not had the pleasure of building one or toying with one... so I have not a clue where to purchase one... Would like it to be bulletproof as this car is for a highly visible celebrity - I dont want to have any problems or suprises....
So - aside from the transmission itself, what else do i need to install this thing ? I assume an ECU to control the electronics?
I'm just looking to be pointed in the right direction.
I would go for a 4L80E. That is the transmission behind the 2500 and 3500 Chevy trucks. I do not know if it will fit in the tunnel without modifications though. The 4L60E can be built to be very strong. However, if this car is going to be high profile, I wouldn't go with the 60.
You will need a trans controller and I can not think of who makes one, sorry.
The other option you have would be to go with a TH400 which is a three speed and then put a gear vendors over drive unit behind it. That would give you six gears.

OK - TCI makes a controlling unit... $983.33
Their 4L80E is listed at $3,470.13
Torque convertor is listed at $614.43
OUCH! Total = $5,067.89
Anyone have a cheaper source for 4L80E's ?
Damn... havent seen prices that high sinse I looked at Hemi carbs

Junkyard 4L80Es are near bullet proof to begin with. If it makes you feel better have it rebuilt with red clutch packs and your set.

Those are all retail prices. For example, I sell the TCI controller for $659.95. Early Impalas came with tiny powerglides, so you might have some tunnel work to do. 570ftlbs of toruq is in line with the factory rating of a 4L80E. It's about the safe limit of a built 4L60E. The computer is the same either way. A good junkyard connection can net you a 4L80E for under $500. We bought a Hughes 4L80E for $3500 which includes a $1000 core charge. Then we found a junkyard core for $300 and sent it back. So $2800 plus shipping. Cost is largely dependant on engine output. There is simply no cheap way to harness 800 ft-lbs or more, but at 550 ft-lbs, you have options.
$2800.00 Trans
$ 659.95 Computer
$ 697.00 Converter
$4197.00 Total

Second this one. I've watched a certain blue turbo truck beat the absolute snot out of this trans at the track over and over without issue!
