Well I am excited to say that my project is off to the races! Prodigy Customs is building me a bad ass roller with all the good stuff. Frank and his crew are kicking some serious ass on my car!

I bought an all original 307 car. You should of seen the ripping I got when I parted some of this car out on camaros.net. I had one guy call me and beg me not to do it. Sorry man.

It does look decent in that original picture but I don't think it's necessarily a "loss" for the Camaro world. I mean, c'mon, it's a green 307!! :)

+1 for Pro-Touring!! You're still saving a classic car! Can't wait to see the finished project, sounds awesome.

Hey Darrin I remember you now. It was either guys wanted me to sell it or cut it up. That was exactly my point. Somebody was going to chop it up anyway being a 307 car so why not me:naughty: This car is getting a first class restoration. With just a few mods

My project is progressing nicely. The boys at Prodigy Customs have all the rough sheetmetal work done, mini tubs are in, and the subframe connectors are installed. One minor hiccup is my 19x13 rims are blowing out the sidewall so they don't fit. The wheels need narrowed 1 inch to suck in the sidewall. She's going into the paint booth for epoxy primer today.

Thanks guys. I haven't updated my build for a while. Frank is hoping to have my car done in early December. I am making sure I have my engine ready to stab so that is all done. Today I spent about an hour on my oil breather system and my starter shield. I decided I didn't want to run valve cover breathers due to the mess that would eventually compromise my headers and so on.
I went ahead and bought some new valve covers with no holes so I could modify them. I am going to run a -12AN breather system with canister. Today I went ahead and found the best place for my breather and cut the hole, filed it smooth, and bolted it on. I was going to reduce it to -10 AN but Frank talked me into 12 so jegs is going to have to exchange a few things.

I am running a GM performance parts mini starter. Those killer headers come with a compromise. The header and starter have to go on together. I hope to do it only once so I am taking every step to protect that little sucker. I moved the starter as close to the block as possible and of course the shield hits the block. I ground it down so it does not touch the block. I don't want any noise. I will also run my starter wiring and probably atleast one spark plug wire through the shield for extra protection.

Money well spent I think.

Well the front subframe is in and welded, paint is almost finish buffed.......but I woke up yesterday and decided it was a bad move to use the stock sub in my car. So the boys at Prodigy are going to cut it out and the new DSE sub is going in!!
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/02/subframe_2_pic-1.jpg
This will allow me to run a 275mm up front and drop it another inch from the 2 inch drop springs. Plus I can fine tune the ride height without cutting springs.

Now the problem. I have to buy new headers, widen the front wheels, buy new tires, :willy:
So my kick ass Lemons Headers are for sale and my freshly restored front sub tricked out with all DSE's finest is for sale. The pits have been filled and she has a fresh coat of paint. Headers are $1425 shipped and I need to think about the sub.
Frank has also ordered me a narrower rear end due to rear wheel changes.

Hmmm, I figured that you would switch to the DSE subframe. Definitely a good choice. I did the same thing on my mine about a year ago. Although, I didn't have the headers. Did you order brakes for it yet? Takes the brakes with a C6 spindle. I got Baer 6 piston monoblock and 14 inch rotor. The cheapest the place to buy them was at Tybrne Motorsports. http://www.tbyrne.com I think they are sale again there. Took awhile to get them, but at that price it was worth the wait.

Do you have plans to smooth the DSE subframe too? You car looks great.

Well, you can do the subframe in bondo. That is what Kyle Tucker did on his prototype subframe. There is another guy that did in bondo, but can't remember the name. Regardless, you have disassemble it to paint or powder coat it. Anyway, the amount of money that you are spending on headers, etc. Every little detail sets the car off.

After many months of coming in and out of the garage and being a huge procrastinator,(I hate paint work) I decided the oil pan had to match the block and car. I liked it red at first, but it just doesn't match my theme. Nothing like sniffing paint first thing in the morning.

First off, Thanks for the kind words Todd. We pride ourselves on giving what we say we will give at the price we quoted! You were a pleasure to work with. It is nice working with someone with a clear vision and a obvious knack for details. We always appreciate customers like you that buy all the coolest stuff. Just makes our hard work look that much better. I cannot wait to see it when your finished. I think I will fly out to go for a ride! You know if you need anything at all.................

Thanks again

The paint system is Sherwin Williams Ultra 7 line. The car is shot in base, then 2 1/2 coats of Ultra 7 950 clear (thi is a super high solids clear, more the 2 1/2 coats is TOO MUCH at once), then long blocked with 600 and re cleared with 2 1/2 coats of 950 clear again. Then long blocked with 800, 1500, then sponge blocked with 2500, 3000 Trizact, and then some magic 4000 grit called buff flex, then buffed with Mequires line.

The car is no riddler winner, but pretty damn straight and flat for a black paint job. Black always brings out the best in a painter. This was the first black one we have done since Prodigy. A little known fact, all my cars are black except Lisa's EmptyNest. Just always love black!

Well I have run into a couple problems that will slow me down.
The drivetrain angle is approx 4.5 degrees measuring off the tail shaft, and that is with it uncomfortably close to the tunnel. I am going to order the driveshaft and measure off the U joint caps like Jim over at Classic Chevy 5 speed said I must do. Looks like the tunnel will need cut or I'll have to put stock height bushings in the car. I would have to cut the subframe connector welds to put stock height bushing in it anyway. At this point I'll probably cut the tunnel due to already cutting all my custom lines. I did ask for stock height bushings when Prodigy built my roller, so not real excited about all the trouble it's caused me so far. More than likely Payback is going to have to make a trip down to ATS for the tunnel fabrication. May just get it running and have him do the tunnel and exhaust all at once.
Had to cut the hole for my AC in my DSE dash and the paint chipped when I pulled off the tape. Make sure you cut all your holes before you paint it.

For you guys running the DSE sub. Do yourself a favor and have them weld on the Z bar bracket. The inner fender makes this a real pain in the you know what. It's tapped and done right but......it was a last minute change. The clutch rod etc. is on the top of the list. She is a dirty pig right now and needs some touch up. Somehow the inner fender got all scratched to **** on the way here. Of course no steering was probably the cause.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/07/IMG_0863-1.jpg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/07/IMG_0862-1.jpg
The boys over at ATS have been treating me right. Here is the solution to my crossmember issues. They modified it with one of their T56 crossmember ends and moved the center bracket slightly. Of course it still needs painted. ATS is top notch. Highly recommend them.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/07/IMG_0860-1.jpg
I added fuel tonight to prime the fuel system and check for leaks. I had 4 leaks. Two at the carb bowls and the fitting on both sides of the pump. I used a pipe dope and the fuel ate right through it. Lucky me!! I had to disasemble all the fittings with the dope and replace it with tape. It's all fixed now but what a mother ######. The carb leaks were caused by a frankly crappy design. They used two gaskets with my high dollar fuel rail. I used the gaskets and tape and it's not leaking anytime soon.

Late last night I realized the dash lights weren't working. The right turn signal also was not functional. I dug in this morning and found blown fuses in both circuits. I definitely had a short on my hands. For those of you that are not real savvy with electronics the key to finding the short is eliminating segments of the wiring that you think has the short. In these old cars it's a piece of cake. It turned out to be my brand spanking new right front parking lamp. They must of chaffed the wires during assembly. I unplugged it and everything is perfect. I'll probably disasemble it and try to fix it vs send it back.
My first view of the gauges at night. :D
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/07/IMG_0871-1.jpg

I spent most of the rest of the night installing my emergency brake cable. Cut the lokar cables have everthing set up perfect. Push down on the pedal and it's rock hard and the wheels aren't moving with a breaker bar. About the third time it sinks to the floor. Pile of crap OER front cable broke third pull. :unibrow: So brand new OER parts are my two bugs to fix for the night. My works flawless.

I need to play with timing and idle speed still. About a tea spoon of oil on the floor from one oil line at filter adapter after 20 minutes. Think they probably just need a littl more torque. I have since learned these fittings need to be pretty tight after my fuel fiasco.

Then the Rack is going in and some final adjustments on the coil overs. Then a ride:naughty: and down to ATS for exhaust. Then alignment and finally stereo and interior finishing touches. Thanks guys...probably not to many updates until the stance is nailed and I finish up a few details. Right now I have the new Rack and Pinion here but overnighted new teflon washers for the fittings. Then the Rack is going in and some final adjustments on the coil overs. Then a ride:naughty: and down to ATS for exhaust. Then alignment and finally stereo and interior finishing touches. It's been 108-110 lately and hard to drag myself out of the AC at night.
I know the feeling, I've got a project in my garage that needs to be tackled, but 100+ degree weather makes me stay in the a/c!

It's been a while since I updated my project. As some of you know I had some fuel system problems after a few test drives. Very noisy pump and low pressure when hot. Replaced the pump and it was junk out of the box.
I was very burnt out after working on the car nonstop since it showed up in April and haven't done much to it for a few weeks. The 100-110 degree temps will zap you pretty quick. After all this is supposed to be fun. I am ready to dig back in with fall and decent temps around the bend. I have redesigned the fuel system with new components and old. I will be running a return style system with the following components:
Feed: 1/2 npt to 10an
New Aeromotive shut off valve/filter 10an
Mallory 140 fuel pump
1/2 hardline and 8AN after pump
Holley return style regulator(Wanted to use the same bracketry)
1/2 hardline and 8 an return line into the top of the tank
1/2 to 10 an Vent from the top of the tank
I am still waiting on two 1/2 stainless fittings from Ricks so I can have ATS weld them in for my new return and larger vent. Ricks only puts a 1/4 npt vent standard. It should be atleast as large as your fuel line. As soon as I get the tank squared away I'll have it knocked out in a couple nights or a day.

I also had some major concerns about the fuel sender. The needle has always been pegged on Empty. Knowing I had 4 gallons in the tank I checked the resistance at my sender plug and found .5 ohms. That explains why it's pegged on empty. After a call to Hector over at Ricks Tanks I discovered that they have the sender off the tank floor more than I expected. Now that I have the tank out and the entire fuel system apart it was time to test it. I found nothing wrong with the sender. It looks like I'll have one hell of a reserve. :D That could get me in some trouble.

It's been a adventurous few weeks to say the least. Business had been crazy busy and I spent the better part of 2 weeks redesigning my fuel system to a return style system which included ATS welding in some stainless stell bungs. I ended up with a mallory 140 pump and three 1/2 npt bungs. Feed, retun, vent. I ran 1/2npt to 10an feed to the pump and 8an hardline and braided to the regulator, 8an and 1/2 hardline return to the top of the tank, 1/2 vent from the top of the tank. Everybody said it was overkill to run that size vent. I filled my car up tonight with the pump at full blast. With a 3/8 barb it would barely take fuel. Mallory really lead me in the right direction. Highly recommend those guys!

After all my fuel fun it was time to take her down to ATS for exhaust. Frank at prodigycustoms sent me my magnaflow system in stainless with 3" pipes and mufflers. After getting the fuel system dialed in and open headers I decided to drive her down to ATS. It's about 15 miles from my place. The car ran absolutely fantastic and I hadn't calibrated the speedo and was running 90-100mph down the I 15 into Vegas. Car felt so good! I get down to the frontage road to ATS and goose it to show off and slammed on the brakes to make the turn. The engine floods out and the headers catch fire from the excess fuel. Now the air cleaner catches fire. Luckily I grabbed my extinguisher for the ride and Tyler came running. I popped the hood immediately and we got it out before much damage. Well turns out the rear float level on a 850 holley being to high will dump fuel into your engine under hard braking especially to a stop. I had the pleasure of spending 4-6 hours sanding headers with soap, water, and fine steel wool, brushing floor boards, and replacing a couple wire loom nylons. I got so damn lucky . She's about 80% of what she was pre fire. Meaning detail wise.
So I pulled the carb off and ripped it apart to see if any debris was present from my fuel plumbing job. Carb was clean. Had to be rear float level. Put her back on the car and it leaked like a siv. Replaced the float bowl gasket and it leaked. Had to replaced the bolt nylons to get it to quit. This is when I went to school on holley float adjusting. Finally got her dialed in tonight .
Time for the test drive. Take her out and hammer her pretty hard. This biatch flys! Running down the freeway doing 80 and it sputter and dies. Just what I need right now. It's out of gas. Best news I have had in 3 weeks. Old lady bring a gas can and she fires right up and I filled it up dialed in the idle and there she sits.
Springs are settling super fast. I need to crank up the coil overs again to get it to where the front doesn't rub and the back looks proportional.
Pictures and a killer video are coming very soon .

Been taking her on routine little runs. To the gym and for a haircut yesterday. Tonight I went to lowes and ran a big loop on the freeway. I have to say driving my 08 550i is a bore now. Walking out of lowes tonight made it all worth it. The flourescent light really made the wheels bling. A nice couple was like what is that thing. First set of jaws dropping. The picture sucks but I couldn't resist and shot it with my cellphone. She looked about 10 times as hot. Got one word for this car. Insane. First time I have ever punched the throttle and got sideways going 55!!!!:D That 587 ftlbs at 3700 gets it done. The money spent on the headers and exhaust was worth every penny. I am confident I am getting every last ounce of horsepower out of this engine. Working out some bugs this week.

Clutch pedal wasn't returning to the pedal stop. I made a z bracket out of 3/8 steel and a stronger spring. I attached it to the blow proof bellhousing. With these 2 1/8 headers using a stock spring setup is not going to happen. Redo

Pinion angle/ rear tire rub. After a discussion a month of so ago I discovered that the pinion angle was supposed to be 1 degree negative of the drive line angle with a G Bar. A little more with high horsepower applications. I set mine at 2 degrees negative tonight after having it 2 degree negative of level. It did smooth out the acceleration somewhat. I knew I would gain some clearance from the front of the tire to the fender lip. It actually moved the tire back .5 inches and centered the tire in the wheel well. Two problems solved in one. It didn't get rid of the vibration that starts right at 72. It's got to be wheel balance because it has none until that point. (Buy the Prodigy Bar....the stock setup absolutely sucks for pinion angle adjustments) I hope the neighbors kids were in bed.

Hesitation hot off idle/ hard hot start I bought a Phenolic .5 carb spacer. This cuts way down on the heat transfer between the engine and carb. From some research new fuels boil easier than old. The cooler you can keep your carb the better. Tomorrow it's going on and then I will tweak the idle mixtures and accelerator pumps. This should help me eleminate the stumble off idle and hard hot start.

Re routed my vent for my fuel tank. More of a striaght up design. While under the car tonight I now have a leak at my pump inlet. Drip ever once an a while. I used high temp teflon and let it set up for 72hrs. These things are a bitch to seal.

I also adjusted all four coil overs for the third time. The front is higher than I would like but it seems to still be settling. I am going to drive it for a few weeks and then worry about getting it perfect.

theres a guy from nasty z that got some crossweave material from sparco that matched his seats and i asked how he got it. he said his warehouse works with them and it was a special order but said he knows of the material with the metal sheen youhaveon yours and could get it from them... siad its pretty expensive though, it was like $200 for 1 meter by 5 meters.

Well the car is out of commission for interior work. I talked to a couple shops and they wanted crazy money and the car for the rest of my life. So I decided to get as far as I can, of course being happy with the outcome and what I am not capable of or have time for someone can finish.

Well 600hp and 2 1/8 primaries makes some serious heat. The floors are coated inside and out, and I also have second skin dynapro or whatever they call it. The floor was still getting hot especially in the foot boards and tunnel. I decided to add a second layer of insulation. It's 3/8 inch thick with jute and foil on both sides. The whole floor and tunnel is done. I built up the rear floor pans to be even as they would be from the factory. Since I have the DSE connectors it puts a nice hump in the floor pan for the carpet. I then taped it all with aluminized heat tape.

I have spent alot of time looking at different stereo and speaker options. You really didn't think I was going to half ass the sound system did you.:D

I decided to go with an Alpine 2008 model with IPOD, HD radio, Blue tooth, etc. You can pick your songs right on the head unit. Pretty slick set up. It's wired up and ready to go.

I am also running the factory setup in the dash, except for I opted for the kenwood upgrade. The bracket that came with it was so flimsy I decided to make my own.

Now for the fun part. Everything else is top of the line JL Audio. I am going to have 2 4" speakers in the kicks with tweeters. 2 6x9's in the rear dash with tweeters. 10" sub in the trunk along with my 1320 watt amp. Should get the job done. Once I get the carpet back in and seats all the rest of the sounds system. I am going to take it somewhere to build the box. The amp will be mounted to it and maybe the trunk carpeted.

I need my car back on the road by next weekend for some cruises and Sema stuff. I now have the Heat/AC unit brackets and misc. to get it level and in the right position for ducts and hoses. With a shaved firewall and not wanting to breach it, things are more difficult.
I decided I wanted the combination of old school fresh air vents and modern AC and Heat. I have good memories of opening the vents in my 68 on a cool night. So it will have both. I installed the 4" JL's in the kicks and isulated the area behind the speakers.
Since the dash top was replaced by Prodigy Customs during the body restoration, the defrost vent mounts were missing. I fabbed up some brackets out of some roofing materials and they are exactly where they need to be.

Carpet is in, radio is in, all speaker wiring is routed, shifter boot, kick panels, rear shelf, all speakers except sub. Sticking point if drivers door panel. The door won't shut with it installed in the right spot for the windlace. Car is identical on both sides. Probably going to need to shave the panel. So may end up recovering both panels and then the rear panels will match so they aren't done.

I decided to clean up the garage and in the middle put the front spoiler on with one bolt. What do you think? With or without the spoiler?

Well the transmission is coming back out of my car. I have been fighting a vibration at highway speed in approx 85-95mph range. There has always been a vibration in the 2600-2800 rpm range in the motor. Wouldn't call it a bad vibration. In fact I rode passenger a few days ago and really didn't notice it around town. Just thought it was solid mounts/body mounts. In 1-4th gear it's really not that big a deal. In 5th more harmonics are transferred and it stays in the pocket longer. Orginally I thought it was pinion angle. Until I pushed in the clutch in the pocket and it went away. I was also able to go through that mph range in 4th and beyond with normal vibration.

When I had the engine built it went beyond schedule and they were impossible to reach for a couple months. They were supposed to send the flywheel I paid for. It didn't show and I couldn't wait. After a ton of research and talking with the engine builder. I have a gen vi block with a gen iV crankshaft. I assumed since they used a gen vi block that was the proper flywheel. Turns out you can use a gen iv crank with a adapter for the rear main seal. Keep in mind this is an external balance engine. After some research it appears the weight is in a slightly different place and the imbalance is 33 OZ in the gen iv and 41.7 in the gen v/vi. 8 oz is quite a bit a weight on the end of a crankshaft. I am surprised it only showed up between 2600-2800. I hope I haven't done any damage to my engine. Would have been nice for them to put something in my paperwork indicating this little fact!!! Oh well....time will tell.

See the difference?

Three hours later and it's all apart. Probably a half hour on a hoist.

Anyway here we go.

This is an interesting picture and what I believe to be the reason the improper flywheel didn't vibrate anywhere but that specific rpm range. The centerforce weights were definitely compensating.

The inside of the bellhousing has a ring around the inside. This is definitely throw out bearing grease.

The clutch, flywheel, and pressure plate couldn't look better. No oil penetration.

After three days of crawling around on the garage floor, I got it back together. I went with the proper gen iv centerforce billet steel flywheel. Nice piece. Of course I then had to remove the shims from my starter nose due to about .060 difference in nose to ring gear clearance difference from gen iv to vi. I did buy a real metal clutch alignment tool for like 20 bucks. The tranny went in so easy. I had it up and in in less than 10 minutes. Best 20 bucks I ever spent.

Well, it's smoother everywhere. But......I still have a vibration. Now it's only at 2800 rpm. Man is she a sweetheart everywhere else. I tried to feel a weight on the balancer but couldn't get my fingers in there. Next I need to verify it's got the correct balancer.

It gave me a chance to clean the bottom while I was under there. Changed the oil and it looked great, changed the tranny fluid and it looked fine as well. Seems things are breaking in nicely. Here are some photos of the bottom. Don't think I have posted many.

The guys at ATS did a fantastic job on my exhaust. Fits so nice and snug. Never has it touched anything in the road.

70 and sunny today...not a cloud in the sky. Polished her up and out to the middle of nowhere on the Arizona side of the lake. Broke the 1000 mile mark today and got a quick video. Road was not the best so I was taking it easy. I still can't get over just how nice it rides yet handles like my Corvette.

It was a really tight road with no room for error. I prefer a road on the Nevada side but it's always busy on the weekends. Way better pavement and more room to roam. Next will probably be a chassis dyno video. I still plan to do a real trick video, but I need to quit driving and start finishing.:hammer:

Hey, Vegas, hows it going? Just thought I'd stop in and check out some of this bad ass stuff over here.

I love the Pro-Touring scene.

Take care!
