This is my second latest purchase. I just bought the car from the original owner here in Nashville Tn. Completely original car down to the paint. Runs and drives pretty good!

Original 400, A/C, automatic, steering, buckets, console, 12 bolt, sway bars and a real red/red car!

Nice project! Very complete to boot! What are your plans? Ever see the Oldsmobile "Apollo" show car? It was very red, with the brightest red & black interior you ever saw!

Here's my dad's. Just put in a new 455 last weekend. 17 in Vintage Wheel Works wheels, GW uppers and lowers / sway bars, getting it ready for A/C. We lowered the rear 2 inches since this photo.

Here is a Carter Hickman rendering of a '61, but it's not a vert. I would be shooting for a similar look for mine.

If he does he should not open the hood. Some of those Olds is the only way guys get thier feathers ruffled if the motor was not built by the doctor himself. I say its a sweet car no matter what motor is in it.:)

I will be there but you can't show your car unless you join the olds club of america and the local olds chapter of PA.
I only live about 20 minutes from the show.

I went last year for the local event and thats all anybody was talking about why I took out the original motor I can only imagine what it would be like at a national meet.

So I have noticed. Alot also are that way when it comes down to any of the car. They feel if it was good enough for Oldsmobile it should be good enough for you. But I know I will be there. And there are alot of Olds people here. Maybe if we get enough it will be harder to look down on us.

Nice looking Cutlass, Richard! Looked to be in pretty good shape when you started with it. I'm curious, are you going to put the factory side trim back on? I think it looks good on there, but maybe it wont flow with the car when you are finished? Anyhow, Sweet ride you have...outside the box:twothumbs

Body and and all trim will be restored to better than original. I just pulled it all off to color sand and buff the original paint.

It was a really nice car to start with. 67K mile untouched original paint and interior. No rust either and was kept in a heated garage in PA its whole life.

Mine has the 4l60e auto. I would have loved to have the 6 speed but my car was a 2 speed auto on the column. I took the easy way out. I hooked the 4l60e to the column works like a charm. I have a floor shift steering column tube if you are converting a column to a floor shift. I once thought I might convert mine but now want be. I'll let it go cheap if you need one.

Thanks,

It's BMW Orient Blue Metallic #317. I dont think they have that on '09 Bimmers, but up to about '07. It would be good to see the color in person. It's a really neat color, and at times, looks like it has a tad of purple in it. At night, it looks black.

I love your car's stance! I have the same springs plus the ATS spindles, so I should have a little more drop up front. Its really cool to see what stance my car should have when I finally finish it.

My '65 Jetstar 88. Parents bought it new in 65, so I guess that makes it a one owner :-)

:twothumbs I worked for an Olds dealer for over 20 years so I have a soft spot for these cars. This is one of the nicest Olds of any type I have ever seen. This car is beautiful! What a great job. Olds built some good looking cars back in the day and I'm surprised we don't see more of them being built. This car will surely inspire some people to consider doing an Olds. Enjoy!

Thank you for the compliment JV69/Z28..When I turned 16, my parents gave it to me for my first car. I drove it for about a year then moved on to cooler cars (the olds wasnt "cool" back then...just an "old hand-me down".) That thing sat in storage for more than 20 years, and I revived it about 5 years ago (new paint, interior, air bags and Torque Thrust IIs). Everything on the underside has been replaced (bushing, bearings, brakes, etc.). Originally the Jestar 88 came with a 330ci engine, 2-speed transmission so I took that out and dropped in a 425 and transmission from a Delta 88.

Fortunately, I didn't have to scrounge around for any original parts, since everything was all there (chrome, stainless trim, etc.) Oldsmobile only made 12,000 '65 Jestar 88, and wasnt a very popular car when compared to the more loaded-out Delta and Dynamic. The biggest problem for the Jestar 88, was the fact that the drivetrain, suspension and brakes came from the f-85, which was way to small for such a big car. The Delta and Dynamic had the 425 and 455 with larger brakes. Since it wasn't really all that popular of a car, there are very few '65 Jetstar 88s remaining. I've only seen 2 others in person my whole life. It amazes me the attention the car gets, especially at Good-Guys shows. The first show I drove it to after it was finished, was the Good-Guys Nationals in Columbus Ohio, where it received a Custom Rodder Magazine Top Ten pick. I was floored! To me, it's just an old car that I grew up with :-) Oh yeah.. It only has 56,000 mile on it!

Wiat a minute now. Is that a real Olds engine that is EFI and twin supercharged? You really need to start a build up thread on this car. The stance is prefect. You just need a better set of wheels and tires.

Only other pic I have right now.... Mild restoration back in the mid 80's. I helped him rebuild the front end last Christmas. He will be ordering a Lee steering box for it soon. Going to stay mostly stock though. Needs a new exhaust and the interior needs to be redone, but it is a low mileage creampuff.

Thanks Richard. Once I got the front suspension on and settled, I had the rear springs in and out about 6 times trimming them to get the stance. They were easy to R&R and trim a little more. It's a little harder to add some back if you go to far though. Been there and done that. :)

Lee, I ditched my 1157 sockets/lights a couple of months ago. I was having problems with the bulbs losing contact in the socket. I got some "direct replacement" ones that were as bad as the original ones. This means I was driving around with one or no brake lights and had to constantly check them. They aren't the brightest lights to begin with. I decided I needed do something about them before I got a ticket or worse got rearended.
I was at the Portland swap meet in April and talked with a few people who were selling LED lights. Nobody makes them for older Oldsmobiles (there are some for the G-bodies) and I don't think they ever will. There just isn't enough demand. I started looking at what they had that was the general size and shape I needed. I bought a pair of United Pacific lights for '64 1/2 Mustangs. They are epoxy sealed and have 1157 type pigtails so they can plug into the stock socket. It cost me $70 for the pair.
I got them home and pulled out one of my taillight housings to see what I was getting myself into. It looked like I could make them fit. I had to work myself up a little to start cutting on brand new lights.
I trimmed off the reflectors on both sides, but I didn't have to touch the epoxy sealed part. I cut the inner side straight and tapered the outside to fit snugly in the housing. You have to "mirror image" the lights because the housings are straight towards the center of the car and tapered on the outisde (the pictures are of the right light).
I used trim adhesive tape to secure them in the housings. The store had some generic stuff but I bought the 3M because it seems much stickier. You can see it in the picture of the light sitting in the housing. I put some on the housing where the top and bottom touched on the left side. On the right side I put some on all 3 of the "pop outs" that clear the screws. It sticks to the side of the new light there. I just pushed them down into the tape and they seem wedged in nice and tight.
I cut off the 1157 pigtails and my sockets (since they were the problem to begin with) and wired them direct. On a nice original car you could retrofit these without cutting anything and be able to go back completely stock whenever you wanted.
I'm really happy with the way they turned out. I have driven the car quite a bit since putting them in and they are holding in the housings fine. The lights are way brighter. The picture doesn't really do it justice.
One more thing, I had to change the turn signal flasher. The LED lights don't draw enough power to trigger the old mechanical flasher so they didn't blink. I had to buy an electronic one for $5.99.

jocko124

Looks great. I'd like to get LEDs in the rear and HIDs up front. It's toward the bottom of my list, but I'm always on the lookout for ideas. As you said, it's a little frustrating that Olds has pretty much no aftermarket support.

gearheads78
06-23-2010, 04:15 PM
Thats awsome and much smarter than how I thought about doing it. I was pretty much going to make them from scratch getting the individual strands of LED's and mounting them inside hacked up stock housings.

Mingus
06-23-2010, 06:13 PM
I had thought about doing it with strings of LEDs too. I'd been having problems with the lights a couple of years. I also almost used the rectangular lights for semis. These ended up working out way better than I ever expected. I like the fact they're completely sealed. Some of the ones I've looked at aren't. I'm not sure they'd be a problem but it seems like dust and moisture could get into them over time.
The only way I think they could be better is if they were one solid row of lights. They have two blank spots in them where the Mustang taillight trim would cover them. It's not a big deal though and I haven't seen another light that would fit as good as these do.
I do wish they would make more Olds parts. Unfortunately, there just aren't that many of them around compared to Chevys and Pontiacs. I'm just glad they share suspension parts with the other A-bodies. :)

A couple shots from the Hot Rod Power Tour

Somewhere south of St Louis, took a detour to skip traffic and it ended up being a nice little drive.

Stopped at "Land Between the Lakes" state park on the way home from Memphis. 40+ miles of windy roads and fun cruising, mostly with a 50mph speed limit.

What a collection of beautiful Oldsmobiles!

Give me a couple months . . . in the middle of my pro-touring build. Actually have it MUCH more scattered at the moment than this pic shows.

And, not that it matters in the grander scheme but . . . it is still Olds powered . . .:twothumbs

Not many Olds pictures recently. Here is my 1970 Cutlass Supreme.
Here is how it looked in 2000 and now. I'm working on a frame off update with LS conversion and updated suspension.

love the wheel change

Thanks! I really liked the 5 spoke wheels because the machined accents around the spokes went well with the Supreme trim on the car. But they were 10 years old, needed to be refinished, and I thought it was time for an update anyway.
