Our A/c condensor fan motor went out sometime this afternoon. My wife called me at work to say that the air was blowing warm from the vents and the outside unit wasn't running. I tried spinning the motor by hand and it was stiff.

Got a replacement at Grainger and it was identical to what I took out except that the new motor has two brown leads going to the capacitor instead of just one.

The old motor wiring was black to "terminal"

Yellow to one "lug" on capicitor and brown to other lug

The new motor has a white instead of yellow, and there is an additional brn/wht which was indicated to go together with solid brn.

So it turns on, but the fan does not seem to be pushing quite as hard as it should, and after a minute or so the motor stops.

I tried a new capacitor I picked up with the motor and it worked again, but same as before, and quit after a minute.

Is it likely I have something wired wrong, or did something else get damaged due to overheating when the fan locked up? This unit is old an truly in need of replacement, but budget right now dictates I try to nurse it through the summer.

Anyone that can help out there? It's supposed to be hot (mid to upper 90's) for the next few days.

the black and white on the new motor should go to the black and yellow for the old motor.......put the 2 browns to the cap

are you sure you got the right cap?......it should say what it reqs on the box and on the motor itself......probably 5 or 7.5 mf @ 370

the only two other possibilities are wrong hp or wrong voltage......you should be able to get that info off the old motor.......can you tell me make /mod of the unit??......does the compressor run?.......did you reset your breaker?...turn it to "off" then back to on or if you have glass fuses replace both of them......sometimes only one leg of the 220 will pop and will allow the unit to "sort of" run.

with the motor running but stopping my bets on the cap though......

Got it figured out. The old setup had the yellow going through the cap. I now have the black & white going to the contactor and just the brown & brn/wht going to the cap.

Thanks for the response!
