View Full Version : How about a contest? it beats doing chores.. :)

I thought it would be fun to have a contest of sorts. Recently I built a 408 stroker small block Ford engine for my Fairlane. It wasn’t a low buck affair, more middle of the road and what I was thinking was a little guessing game.
Guess the corrected HP and TQ and win a prize. The closest person that guesses will get a few cool prizes from my private stash of schwag. In the unlikely event of a tie I will send stuff to both winners. If there are a bunch of ties then the earliest ones win. The amount your off from either number will be added together. This isn’t ‘The Price Is Right’, so you can go over.
Here’s the basic mix:
1975 351W block
Stroked to 408
Eagle cast crank
Forged Rods
Dished SRP forged pistons
10.9 compression - run on 91 octane gas
Comp Magnum roller rockers (alum)
Comp 7.7 inch Magnum push rods
Comp vertical bar roller lifters (recommended by Stangnet)
Edelbrock Victor Jr single-plane intake
Holley 950 cfm carb (73/73 jets)
Comp double roller timing chain
1 ¾ long tube headers
Mallory Unilite distributor
7 quarts of 30w oil in Milodon pan with windage tray
236/240 .555/.576 110LSA Comp hyd roller cam
AFR 205 heads with ti retainers and their “nitrous port”
Lets see.. helpful info:
The AFR heads flowed
308 intake and 243 exhaust at .600
310 intake and 249 exhaust at .700
154 intake and 122 exhaust at .200
Correction factor was 1.098 (was HOT today)
Anyway, just something fun and winners name and website gets in the story. Oh, “blown up” is a valid guess ;)
Oh, the engine was also tested with a RPM Performer and 750 carb, but the guess is for the vic/950 combo. The contest will run until next Wednesday morning California time, lets say 10am PST.
Most of all, have fun…

Now don't be like that.. It was Westech but they calibrate thier dyno on a regular basis. Thier Superflow is one of the best cells out there and the room pumps a ton of air. An engine in there is the best it can be.
We ran the mech water pump and fuel pump shown.
Now make a guess sucka... ;)
I'll push the high side....

So Westech is a bit "optomistic" on their dyno readings are they? :) My dad is a distribution center manager in one of the buildings next to Westech in Mira Loma. He says he sees all kinds of cool stuff going in and out and can here the rowdier pulls!
My guess is 490hp/470tq

I don't think it's optimistic.. I think that their cell is optimised for pulls. When the fans kick on you can barely pull the door open to go in. They have a kick ass water cir system. What happens is that an engine "is the most it can be" on it's pulls. In hindsight I guess it is "optimistic" but not in the sense that the number are inflated. They are just the best case senario. Steve Brule at Westech is also VERY good at adjusting and optimizing carbs.
They dyno a lot of engines there, but the real benefit of the dyno is tuning for AF ratio and for seeing gains and losses from part changes. We saw a big change from the dual plane to the single plane and we saw zero gain/loss from the addition of a one inch spacer.

Open 1 3/4-inch headers.. running the mech water pump for cooling and even though we had an elec fuel pump the mech one was left installed (just pumping air)

Cool...I guess 515hp and 540tq. I am real interested in the outcome because I have a 351w block in the garage waited to be poked and stroked. A 150 shot should put the rwhp at or near 500 which should be enough for low 11's maybe hi 10's with sticky tires?

The correct numbers.. rounded off was 552/530

That's a total of 15 off on Torque and 13 off on HP.. or 28 :)
the guess at least has to have the hp/tq weighted properly. After all if you guessed 530hp and 552tq that would TECHNICALLY be the same number at the opposite, but it really wouldn't be a very close guess.
Still, you got closer than many people and I think you beat everyone on lateral-g..

Well hell... when I was adding stuff up I though "dammit, I have a three way tie!!" Then I re-checked and must of looked at someone else and said "oh, I must of added wrong"
So, you are in the top three.. congrats and now I have to go dig up more swag.. I didn't really consider a three way tie on ONE site.

Steve thanks running for the contest and the stuff I just received. For the life of me I didn't know what I ordered from "Primedia". All my kids around as I opened it and then it was like the father in "you'll shoot your eye out, kid" Christmas movie, when he wins the leg-lamp, he's reads the word "fra-gil-e" and says it must be made in Italy, and the wife is horrified. Thanks again- :)
