Is it possible to use the later abs/fiberboard headliner in a 1972 camaro instead of the bow style? If so what pieces would need to be purchased/replaced in order for it to fit correctly?

I am not sure about abs but I recovered a headliner for a friend that had a 73 and it had a fiberboard panel. I beleive it was stock.

Answer to your question is yes, get one made for a 73. 73 is the transition year. And won't have the holes cut out for the seat belts. But one this is done, all your interior trim will have to updated to 73 - 81 headliner trim.

Check Classic Industries I think they are in the new catalog. As stated 73 was a transition year some had the bow type and the last of them had the fiberboard. I think the trim at the front and rear window differs but I'm not sure as mine had the bow type. If you want to redo the bow type the bows are available repop from NPD or Classic along with the clips.
