Thanks LT1... Ya, the stock setup just wasn't gonna cut it for me. We narrowed it a little more then a framerail width on both sides. I'm running a 305 25 20, it should fit nicely.... Can't wait for it to be on the ground!!

Are there any 65's with wider? I don't know...hmmm.
I should be posting alot more pics within the next week or so. It's coming along nicely

Thanks Blitz!!! This is actually the 5th '65 that I've owned. My first was when I was 16 and now I'm 28. All the other's were decent drivers but pretty rough around the edges if you know what I mean.... Everyone has to start somewhere buddy, just try and find a solid project and work from there... Goodluck to you!!!!

How old are you anyways Blitz? (if you don't mind me asking)

Blitz
08-10-2007, 06:59 PM
33. And it's funny because despite my dad being a HUGE Chevy/GM supporter his entire life, I've only owned Acuras. For all of my adult life I've been into that scene, but had I been able to afford it at the time (3 Grand, ha...I wish these days) I would've been driving a '68 Camaro and my life (car wise) would've went a totally different way I'm sure...especially if I still had it. I love customs period no matter what the badge but I've always wanted a car that was made before me to have in my garage like I used to see the "old folks" do in magazines and cruise nights when I was a kid. The Chevelle is my other love and every time I see one, no matter how bad it's beat up I imagine what I could do to it to make it one of the baddest out there. Until then, I get to sit back and watch you guys build yours and think about what I'll do when I get that chance.

By the way...what happened to the 4 others? In the future, I may pick your brain on what problem areas to look out for. I've been in Tx 2 months and I just spotted one last weekend for sale. I need a 2nd job! Hahaha.

65chevelle''ss''
08-10-2007, 07:19 PM
I know exactly what you mean Blitz!!! The one example that always sticks into my head is here locally there is a guy who has a '65 convertible. This car is a driver at best (tears in the top with duct tape keeping it together, rusted quarters, etc) I've talked to him on several occassions about the prospect of buying it from him but he will absolutely NOT budge!!! (Note: I don't blame him) It's been probably nearly 10 years since the first time I talked with him, I see him driving it a few times a year but I have never seen him do anything with it. It always looks exactly the same.

I find myself thinking......."if I had that car......." everytime I see him drive by :) O well, right?

You will get yours someday too Blitz. Like you said, whether it's a Camaro, Chevelle or whatever it's still gonna be yours and that's all that matters bro.

For sure though, hit me up if you ever have any questions!!!!

love seeing these '65s take shape! my 1st car was a '65, back in '87, bought it for $275! only had 1st gear in the powerglide, then put a muncie in, everything else that wasn't rusted away was stock, even the 4 wheel non-power drums! trunk was rusted out, wheel lips gone, rear window surround all rusted out... no I don't miss it, would have taken a bundle to sort out, so I bought my brothers '70 nova instead.
still love the lines on the '65, I'll be watching the build!

I like the shaved rails and handles.
I have shaved the rails on my 65 Skylark, but I will need to figure something else out for the handles. I plan to run the car at the drags and they require a way to get into the car from the outside. Gotta find some sort of flush mount handles from another car to graft in.

LOL, I know that story all to well :headbang:

My first car was also a '65. Holes in the floor boards and trunk pans, the quarter panel lips were gone, the electrical system was an absolute mess, etc etc. BUT I wouldn't take that experience back for a second.. It wasn't nice by any means but it had character, that's all that mattered to me at the time :bananna2: I couldn't afford much so I would much rather be driving around in that piece rather then spending the same amount of money on something else.

Turbolark: Just wanted to give you this information in case you were interested.
My little brother has always been into the "import" scene and he built a little VW GTI a few years ago and shaved the handles and locks. He ended up grafting in some handles that I wanna say came out of a Audi S4...? Really clean lookin, flush mounted handles.

If your interested in seeing some pics just let me know and I will try and get ahold of him so he can email me some pics with the exact year/make/model car they came out of????

audi A4/S4 handles are popular on Vws, keepin it all german and that...
don't get me wrong, the 1st car is ALWAYS memorable; I raced a mid 80s 4th gen vette when I still had the 'glide in, I had him all through his 1st and 2nd gear, and I only had 1st! once he hit 3rd, he was gone.:6gears:
I had all kinds of plans w/ that car, even bought the camaro spindles and rotors, had the H-O racing catalog all marked up, ready to go.
the 1st gen chevelle/malibus are a great size, if I did one again I'd like a post model chevelle 300. I like the '67 post model too.

So I want to stay a little ahead of the game here so I'm thinking about what's next for the project in the near future...?

I'm thinking about doing a "wing window delete" on my car. I saw this done in a Nova awhile back and I thought it looked really clean.
Having the body all shaved like it is, I was thinking it might give it that little extra "custom" look.

What do you guys think? Is it more trouble then it's worth?

Blitz
08-15-2007, 02:28 PM
I don't know about the trouble BUT I was thinking that same thing. Always have really. (The only reason I like the '68 Camaro over the '67.) Everytime I see the Chevelle though I think, if only somebody would get rid of those vent windows. Ya never know, if you develop a kit, you may be a future vendor and be earn some cash. It's at MINIMUM worth seriously looking into.

It would definitely be cool to develop a wing window delete kit for the 64-65 Chevelle's but I just don't know if there would be a huge demand for them???? These cars aren't nearly as popular as the 67-69 camaro's, the later year Chevelles, etc.... If the demand was there it would definitely be worth it!!! How hard could it be...????

65chevelle''ss''
08-16-2007, 10:36 PM
Blitz: I know what you mean about the size of that window, it is a pretty big opening.....but I'm still gonna move forward with the idea and see what I can come up with.. If it turns into a huge headache then I will just run the wings.

Like you said, let's get a photochop of it and see what it'll look like!!! Anyone?

Rantheman: Yes, we will definitely be reinforcing the upper mounts. Like I said, those mounts are just tacked into place where they are supposed to sit using the center line of the rearend. Once we get it where we want it we will weld the reinforcements. That pic was taken in the early stages of being in the fixture, still lots to do on it. I will keep the pics coming as we make progress...

car craft ran a picture of a '65 on the cover in the late '80s sometime, w/ some stupid title, like 'best street machine ever'... it was blue, and had ALL the side windows out, the window channels were smoothed over too. if you could find that picture, it will give you some idea. all I recall thinking was, doesn't it rain in his world?
in my '65 and my '70 nova, I really liked the practicality of the wing, that's just me.

That's a pretty good memory Saturn! I can't remember what happened yesterday :worship: I will look into finding that car although I'm really not sure where to even start....?
As far as the wing windows are concerned, I've never actually used them on any of my cars. They were always just something that was there but never touched. To me I'd rather just roll the window down a bit if I want air. I'm really not against the idea of running them, it was just an idea to delete them is all..

on another forum, someone was complaining about how, on some new cars, driving w/ the windows down causes a 'buffering' sound, really loud. what I always liked about my nova was you could still carry on a conversation w/ the windows down, and I would always turn the wing window to direct air into the car. the lower vent w/ the pull handle was cool too.
old cars are just cooler than new cars.

I actually prefer the vent windows. Not that anyone asked.

I'm really in the middle with the whole vent window thing. I would like to see them out to compare but the original look is alright as well. I will probably just end up running the vents because it will end up being alot of work with no guarantees I'll even like the outcome, you know? Who knows.... I got time still before I need to come up with the decision on that one  Thanks for the input guys!!

No, the tubing is really as thick as it looks. Jerry bought the inner bushing and machined those upper mounts himself. In the top pic you can kindof make out the machining he did to the inside of them where the bushing seats...?

Onebad2: Thanks for the comment!!

Rantheman: Yup the next step is powdercoating everything. I can't wait for that!!! It's definitely gonna look SSick at that point :bananna2: You thinking of doing a mini-tub now as well? Is that what your referring to? What you mean by suspension change up?

I can try to show you how i did it if your interested even though you won't be doing it since you already have done yours but I brough my frame rails in 2 inches the only things that I had to worry about is the lower arms lining up and the frame rails being straight otherwise nothing else was effected

Oh, I see. Ya the AFX spindles are a very nice piece...

We fabbed mine up so I could run a 335 as well although I'm only running a 305 for now. Lets see what you did though!! Were gonna have to reangle the lower control arm mounts on the frame side a bit. Were gonna make them more straight on. That what you did?

So your arms are moved inward 2'' on the rearend side due to narrowing your it? Or are you talking you moved the lower arm inward 2'' on the frame side?

Rantheman

you see my upper arms were not touched but when I moved my frame rails in the arms came in 2" then when I narrowed the rear end it all lined up perfect.

I just wanted to post up an update on SSick. It has been awhile since I last posted.

There has been a very sad chain of events in the last week that I regretfully must report. As some of you may know, my car was currently being built by a local, retired, racecar builder. He was narrowing the framerails and 9'' for me to accomodate my 305's as well as all the tin work, etc. You couldn't find another fabricator as good as this guy, honestly.. He spent his whole life doing this stuff... Well sadly he passed away the other day. Unfortunately for me, I only had the opportunity to know him for a very short period of time, maybe only 8 months or so but he will most definitely be missed. By me, by everyone who knew him...... His legacy will live on for years and years to come. When you go out to the local racetrack it would be hard to find someone who didn't know him, someone who hasn't had work done by him, someone who wasn't driving a car built by him, etc. He had a true passion for our sport.

You will be missed

Thanks for the comments guys... It came as a huge surprise to all of us :(

Just a lil update...

I finally got around to ordering the two remaining wheels yesterday. (the fronts) I only ordered the two rears originally so I could fab up the rearend. Talked to Zak at Boze Forged once again, he was alot of help. I appreciate it Zak!!!

Now I will basically have most everything I need sitting in boxes in my garage waiting for the rearend to be fabbed in there:

-AirRide Tech (StrongArms in the front, CoolRide in the rear, and all the compressor components)
-ATS Spindles
-Boze wheels

SOOOOO much money just sitting there but it's gonna be SSick when it comes all together. After I test fit everything and have it how I want it I'm gonna tear it back down and start powdercoating everything......

What to do with the rearend!!!!!?

I ended up just painting my rear end. Currie had already put the bearings in and you apparenlty have to take them back out before you powdercoat (makes sense). To save on hassle, I just had it painted.

Awesome progress. I know what you mean about all that money sitting around. When I just got mine back from the shop with a finished suspension... but more or less a shell... the wifey was like "Ummm... you've got how much money in that? Where's the rest of it?" No vision I tell ya!

Unfortunately there really isn't much of an update. After my fabricator passes away the project came to a complete halt. Instead of finding a new guy to finish it I ended up just tucking it away in storage and there it's sat. SAD!

Well, don't get discouraged about it. When stuff like this happens I tell my friends, "Take a little time for yourself and then go get back to being busy". To me, keeping busy leaves you less focused so much on what happened and helps you get back into the swing of things. Gather inspiration around the site or go to a Car Show. C'mon man, dig back into it. We're all excited here.
