Any one see Lou sunday on muscle car tv?

He took a 1st gen subframe, cut the main cross member out and replaced it with a 1" square tube and some braces.

Question is has anyone done this?
What about FLEXING over bumps?
Wouldn't it just bow in under the load?

Really want to do something like this but don't want it to buckle. Is this a good way or you guys got a better way?

Thanks! :dunno:

yup. saw that.

it was definitely a repeat. I can't really recall but I was thinking that he ended up putting the LS engine in it for the Old Lady Nova he has. I can't remember.

I hated it. I thought it looked sloppy and 'not pretty' but I believe it would have been plenty sturdy. I would have wanted 2 of those square tubes though if I was being forced to put them in.

Gotta ask yourself, what are you trying to accomplish by cutting out the frame like that? Specific engine package? Front steer? Specific Rack and Pinion with proper geometry?

I probably wouldn't have done it the way he did it. :)

I saw the w2w nova. Yes they used the same type of idea. But all of their stuff uses roll bars to help support the sub frame. Whatabout a sub frame that doesn't use roll bars? Would it still be strong enough? What about the flexing without roll bars?

ANYBODY?
I talked with a guy last night he suggested that I use a 1/2" flat bar, or round tube instead of a 1"sq. tube. I think that those would be better but my major concern is "will fold in like a card table?" I'm not planning on all the roll cage up front like w2w has I was wondering if it gets bolted to the body with subframe connectors, would the engine weight keep it from buckleing?
Any input would be great.
Thanks.

I thought he cut out that part of the frame and boxed it in, and only welded in the square tubing to keep it the frame square and from flexing while the center of the cross member was out...
