View Full Version : 14.2" rotors for mopars and fords

after many months of trying to find cheap large rotors for my 74 charger i found these of an srt8 charger/300m/magnum
the fronts measure 14.2" x 1.25" thick and the rears are 13.8" x 1.1" thick with the 5 x 4.5" bolt pattern and a good offset for the viper calipers i have
these are larger than the viper and corvette rotors and cost me $117 for all 4 (low mileage used) off ebay, even new they are still a good price
all i have to do now is cut my existing rotors into hats, install my longer wheel studs and then make caliper brackets to hold the huge viper calipers
hers some pics of the rotors and a mock up with my 20" rim

Looks good Jason,
Let me know what you come up with for a bracket. I have a few of these rotors laying around.

Wow!
Could you do me a favour? Can you measure the maximum sweep height for the front and rear rotors?
Do you know what they weight?
I'm trying to locate a good, cheap rotor for my wilwood P6R calipers. So far, the BMW X5 rotor is a good candidate but it's kind of heavy (13.2" and 23 lbs).

That rocks, I have been thinkin of putting larger rotors on my Bee when I get aroung to putting larger wheels on (still have 15"ers) I heard Mercedes will fit but those can't be cheap or very available.
Keep up the good work.

how big of a front wheel would those require? I'm trying to do something similar with some cobra 13 inch rotors I picked up on the super cheap. originally i had thought of the ram srt-10 brakes, which are 15" front 14" rear, but I'd like to keep the wheel size around 18, ya know.
I am trying to pick up cheap used viper calipers nonetheless.

i think the 14"'s would work with the 18"'s
i thought about the srt10 15"'s but they're 6 bolt which makes them harder to redrill and not much hat offset
mercedes 14" rotors are about $400 each
too rich for my blood

Are you sure they have the 5 x 4.5 pattern? I thought they were metric, being a mercedes chassis.

lol..my 1st dodge had 13 inch wheels. its amazing how much has changed in 21 yrs
viper11
08-02-2007, 08:59 PM
they are metric, but they fit fine and its a fraction of a mm difference I cant remember the exact measurement
the bolt holes are slightly larger on these rotors so i may have to find /make something to fill the gaps????

Cool Idea! That rotor design does make it very hard to run cooling ducts, though. Not that you would need it with a 14" rotor under most conditions.
MrQuick
08-03-2007, 06:50 PM
You would not need cooling ducts with the outer vent type rotors (unless you had closed up wheels. The air comes from the outside and gets sucked inwards.
The reason for ducting is its hard to get air to come in from the inside area of the body.

viper, you don't happen to know the center bore dimensions for those rotors. or, if you got it, do you know the diameter of the mounting ring that's on the drum hub?
MrQuick
08-09-2007, 06:48 PM
The hub diameter on an LX is 72.59mm or 2.857in.

If you come up with more info on mounting this all on the car and what parts to use it would be a great sticky.

I just went and bought 06 grand cherokee srt8 brembo calipers, I plan on using them with 13" cobra rotors front and rear, might have to use a pad spacer for the fronts though. I'm going to pull the front suspension apart in the next couple weeks, and i'll do the measurements and see if I can't sketch out a bracket of some sort
oh yea, 71 satellite w/drums

just an update:
front set slotted 05290537AB
rear set slotted 05290538AB
$117 a pair and plenty of room for redrilling lug patterns. Have Brembo wrapping.
dannyho
09-15-2007, 04:14 PM
well just so you know, the srt-8 lug pattern is a 4x115mm. not 4x4.5in. I know you're thinking no, its 114.3 which is 4.5, but i'm not, it's slightly different and srt-8 owners are having trouble with having to grind the lug openings on the wheels they're buying. I dont know if it would be an issue for this, certainly not if you're going to redrill for a new pattern, but be known that they're not exactly the same.
also i thought it was 107 each, not a pair

srt10 rams are 5 on 5.5 not 6 lug

hi
i think he means the srt rotors of the charger/300/magnum that i originally posted on
i didn't check the exact bolt spacing ... i saw that the owners where using 4.5x5 wheel and just presumed
any way the rotors fit over the hub easily and i will update later this week when i have my brackets finished

Sorry,
I will re check that price. I just did a Charger Thursday and it looked like part number quantity 2 and the price was $117.
Funny you mentioned the rims sizes. We had a few rims fall off a few cars cause the bolt patterns where in correct.

also, the rotors are slotted. but the pn is the same left to right, so i think one side might be curved the wrong way. hopefully it's just a confusing
part numbering system. ideally if they were that per set i'd switch from cobra rotors to those, barring bolt pattern problems and price etc. guess i'll just stay glued to this thread.
does anyone know a larger than 13 inch rotor that's 4x4.5, and not metric. I'm having a problem where the GC SRT8 front caliper rubs on the mounting hat of the rotor, so that's no good. I'd either have to move the whole thing up and run it with some of the pad off the wheel or grind the caliper down, both things i'd rather avoid.

Dannyho - What is Ford using on the new Mustangs? Say the GT500?
What is the difference between the Brembo / Viper and the SRT-8 vehicle Brembo calipers. I don't really now the difference, but this has me wondering since I'm planning an upgrade this winter.
MrQuick

looks like rotor back spacing and lug pattern. The LX wheel face is higher.
dannyho

the new mustangs are 5x4.5 also. the difference in caliper is mostly going to be overall size and piston diameters, the srt-8 calipers are absolutely massive, especially the fronts. design should be very similar.

The new GT-500 is mentioned, it has 14.0 x 1.2ish front rotors. They are ~$100 each from Ford, you may find them cheaper online. Ford p/n 7R3Z 1125 A.

Viper11, how are you coming with this?
It looks like i'm going to be going with the mopar rotors. I'm having issues with the brembos from GC SRT8 hitting the rotor hat on the mustang cobra rotors. is there any way you could get me the dimensions of the srt-8 rotors. I've put together a picture showing what I'd need. It'd be a huge help to me, but don't put yourself out on my accound.
also if anyone could get those dimensions for the gt500 rotors.
I'm sure i'm not the only person who could use them.
thanks. and

i'll get the srt8 dimensions to you tomorrow night. I have a set of rears too.

I have some on the shelf here at the dealership. I won't have a chance today (and I'm away from Friday until Tuesday), but next week I will take one off the shelf and check some measurements.

this is with the brackets installed
i'll take a pic of the hub this weekend
i used the rear rotor because of the better backspacing for my rim
the washers were used to centre the caliper and the welds have been ground smooth

Did you use old rotors for hubs? When I put 18"s on my car I want to upgrade the brakes, currently has 11.75" with Viper calipers. Very cool what you are doin!

yes beecray
i took an old rotor and had a friend cut off the rotor part and machine it smooth, put in longer wheel studs and now i have a cheap hub with a tried and true bearing system :) that can be done to any disk brake mopar.
the only rotor limitation is the hub offset, I would have used the srt10 ram 15" rotors and had them redrilled, but the offset wasn't enough.
maybe next time lol

That is cool, I cut off the rotor on a Dakota rotor just to see how it would work and I have been looking at production rotors that would fit. The biggest hurdle has been the ofset, like you have seen. But now that the rear SRT8s fit, that is awesome. Now I need to save up some pennies for some wheels.

how well do the studs fit up against the holes in the rotor. we were mentioning the concern earlier in this thread, but if all the studs aren't in even contact with their respective holes then hard braking is going to excessively load the studs that are in contact, and if they break it would be a cascading affect, not a gradual one which could be dangerous. of course a redrill would negate this issue, but would you consider it necessary?
I'm not sure how much of a role friction on the rotor hat plays a roll, but i would suspect very little.
MrQuick
09-29-2007, 10:06 PM
most stock cars don't even touch the studs. You can rock it back and forth on the hub, which I will note is a pretty tight fit.
GetMore
09-30-2007, 02:00 PM
Regardless of the lug spacing, all the studs will contact at the same time. They might contact the inside or outside of the holes, but the holes and the studs are all going to be spaced at 72 degrees, assuming a five lug pattern.

hold tight
i have the calipers and rotors on the car and I just matched them to brake lines and banjo bolts
the only modification to the existing brakes was to cut my existing brake line and reflare it with a metric fitting ( I'll explain with pics later
otherwise i'm done with no irreversable modifications.
I'm also upgrading to a 98 mustang Hydroboost System with a MP aluminum master cylinder so I'll post pics of that later too
I'll try to post the part #'s of everything tonight
