Yea, if this issue does well and the Super Chevy with my Camaro does well then it will be hard to argue NOT to put a certain amount of focus on PT cars.
So, go out and buy these issues.. lets make a point! :bananna2:

I've always wondered. How do magazines know when a magazine doesn't sell well? Do the unsold magazines go back? I find the limiting factor is that once a magazine has sold out, it's gone. (usually the case for PHR around here.)

Thanks again everybody. I finally got my issue yesterday.
Ro and Steve did awesome jobs on the writing. The car is more about the trip (and the side-trips) than about the finished product. Ro and Steve both did great in capturing that.
John Ulaszek came through again with a bunch of good pics for the build story.
What more can one say about Johnny and his camera? He's the best hot rod photographer there is. It is awesome to see his work on the printed page, and it was really cool working with him and the Georgia boys (both Georgias if you know what I mean :) ) during the shoot.

How about a list of the tools you have? We need to include it in the total.I've gotten several requests for this. My philosophy was to buy tools so that I could make quality stuff for the car, rather than pay a craftsman to do it. I did leave the engine-building (Wegner Automotive), body and paint (Road Killer Kustoms), and interior stitching (1 Off Rides) to professionals.
The list:
Bandsaw -- I use this more than anything else, and part of the reason for the long build time was me trying other methods to cut metal. I mostly used a jigsaw, sometimes a sheetmetal hand shear or nibbler, and occasionally my plasma cutter. But the bandsaw is a must have. Mine cost about $700 to make. See John Ulaszek's X1Nova site for more information about that.
Belt sander -- Just a cheap Harbor Freight 4x36 setup. I use it for squaring tube, radiusing corners, etc. Like the bandsaw it is useful because it is right there: just turn it on and use it. No digging around in a tool box to find it. $80
Mill/drill -- I use this machine almost as much as the bandsaw and belt sander. The basic machine cost $1000 from Enco, and I have 3 times that in setup and cutting tools. Altogether: around $4000
TIG welder -- Mine's a Lincoln 175 Square Wave machine. $2500.
MIG welder -- Lincoln 220V hobbyist model. I got mine at Home Depot in the refurbished bin. $700 after fitting for gas shielding.
Body rotator -- Homemade from internet plans. A must-have to rip a car down to rocker and quarter panels, cowl, package tray, and roof. I'd have never gotten the floors made without it. $400
Plasma cutter -- A useful tool for cutting the car apart. Not so useful for precision fabrication work. $900
Tubing benders -- Rigid, and I have a complete set (3/16, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 5/8) plus an AN flaring tool. $700.
Structural tube bender -- Trick Tools. I didn't use it that much, but I will on the next one. $2500
Sheet metal brake -- Homemade. $150
Bead roller -- Harbor Freight. $90
Sander/grinder -- DeWalt (electric), I used them the whole time and they are still alive. $450 for both.
And of course, tons of hand tools. Hammers, files, taps, drill bits, etc. I have thousands of dollars invested here. My hand tools are tool truck brands (Snap-on, Mac, S-K) supplemented with Craftsman Professional stuff (I wouldn't buy Craftsman until they came out with that line).
I often wished for a more capable mill and a lathe. Luckily my friend Brian Schein helped me out in Maryland.
Of all those tools, the most important one is the one I'm using now: my computer. Having this Pro-Touring community around to ask questions, look over ideas, and provide support and criticism was far and away the most important part of getting II Much built.

It was fun writing your build story and I'm glad I had YOU write the driving part. I think we managed to give a good taste of the build even though we only had three pages to work with. I'm also really glad we included the timeline.

I had thought you might have a mill - way to many nicely made parts. I sold mine last year to make room for the car. I will get another.Don't be afraid of the cheap Enco mill/drills. Mine has never let me down, uses R8 (Bridgeport) tooling, and is accurate to about .002. The price is right too.
I admit being envious when I see some of those CNC parts, or a beautiful radius on a part (that I have to do with a belt sander), but mine has been a workhorse.

I'm still kicking myself for really reving the motor to 4k rpm during the "scientific sound test". They wouldn't have known if I'd only gone to 3k rpm, and I might have made it back out for the second run.

First off congratulations on the ink! It's very much deserved and I look forward to seeing your car in person. Congratulations John.
I got my issue last night and I read it all, very nice. My wife particularly liked the quote about convincing your wife that it would take $20,000 and a couple years to build. I remember telling my wife a similar story...twice....for the same car.
I wish I was closer to you so I could see it in person. While the pictures are good, I'm sure the car is way more impressive in person. The articles just can't show every little detail that is required to build a car like that.
How far west are you going to go for shows and track events? What other shows or events are you planning? I'm sure there are plenty of us here that would like to know so we can go see the car in person and in action.
Congratulations,
Dennis

Dennis,
I hadn't thought about taking the car out west or anything. Right now I'm looking forward to an autoX in early August, and Sebring on the 25th.
I don't have a "ride" to SEMA, but I'm still hopeful someone might want to have the car in their booth. The YearOne and Eyes on Design show were kind of it for shows.
So I don't know ... maybe I'll see if Frank has any plans and tag along with his crew.

Oh, & what's up with a noise ordinance @ a racetrack?Perhaps the same crap that happened to the NHRA drags in Pomona. Houses were built around the fairgrounds and then the neighbors complained. Of course, I used to live a city (6 miles) over and anytime the top fuel cars ran you could hear and maybe almost feel them run. I now live about 5 miles from California speedway and on quiet afternoons you can hear Nascar and other teams racing/testing on the track.

They have been trying to pull the same crap here in E-Town Raceway Park for years.
Track was built some 40 or 50+ years ago when nothing but farms and slowly sold to developers. Now the morons who bought homes near the track complain. WTF! How can you complain when the damn track's been there well before your house was even an itch in some developers pants~!
Luckily they haven't been able to do much, except for no open header cars after 10 or 11pm on weekdays.
Buy a house next to a ***** farm and it will smell like *****! live with it cause you knew the deal.
