'02-'03 Olds Aurora 4.0 (V8) or 3.5 (V6)

I've got a '01 (DD), which was the first year for the redesign after the First Generation ('95-'99). By '02-'03 most of the problems have been sorted. You do have to do some maintence on them, you can't abuse/negelect them and expect them to hold up like a '92 Escort would.

They're decent power, and can net 27-30mpg (for a V8) at 55-65mph. At 80 I usually get 24-26.

They are extremly safe. And do handle better than most would expect.

Check out used Chevy Malibu's.

Currently the Malibu is one of the better cars made by GM IMO. You can pick up a used one for a good deal.

Nissan Products, just bought a 99 Maxima GLE, pretty fast, cheap mods if you want to do them, and they'll run for ever!

If you're looking for a car, try a used '97-'02 Grand Prix or Regal. The 3.8/auto combo in those cars is as reliable as a hammer, and they will run forever with just basic maintainence. Pretty easy to work on yourself too, so if something does come up, it doesn't cost an arm and a leg at a dealer to fix.

If you're looking for a "truck-like" vehicle, definitely go for a used '97-'01 Jeep Cherokee. Again, reliable as a hammer, and easy to maintain. I bought mine used in '05 with 48K on it, and it has 67K now. In that time, I've just had to change a window regulator, which the previous owner broke trying to put the window down while it was frozen in ice. I've done regular stuff (plugs, air filter, oil changes) and last month I did rotors and pads, and 4 new shocks and new swaybar bushings. It's been good to me so far!

We picked up a little commuter for the city in Conn. about 2 years ago. It was a '00 mazda protoge for 6K and had 50K miles with all the service docs. We've driven the wheels off the thing and had no problems. Just changed the oil ever 3K miles. Have 65K miles on it now and it keeps on running. It gets about 37-8 mpg. Can't go wrong with that as a commuter.

Check out autotrader & craigslist. You should be able to find something that will be a good deal within 2-3 weeks if you are activily looking.
