View Full Version : 2nd gen F BODY DIsC COOLING HATS
NOT A TA

I'm building a brake duct cooling setup for my 70 Firebird to cool the stock front rotors. I've been trying to find cooling hats already made to connect the duct tubes to without any luck. SKULTE Performance designs has offered to look at the possibility of making something similar to the ones they designed for 3rd gens if there's enough potential demand to make it worth their time.

I've tried to include a pool in this thread but can't figure out how to make it work so if anyone would be interested please post up so we can get an idea if it's a worthwile project to persue.

I just have to be honest... Looks like it took about 5 minutes to make in someones garage. Good concept, but needs a lot more time spent on fit-and-finish. WAY TOO MUCK MONEY ($200) for the quality of product!

Hi guys - John forwarded the link to me, and is local, so that makes finding a willing 2nd genner to prototype these brake ducts much easier. Don't worry - the final product is CNC cut with a waterjet and TIG welded, not hand made (I wish it took five minutes - we could drop a zero from the price in that case! It was more than 6 hours with a die grinder - cut, measure, test fit, cut measure test, and repeat...). I apologize for the pictures on the website, and need to get some new ones.
Since we've fabbed the 3rd gen duct prototypes, we've been using 3D modeling software along with a Faro Arm digitizer. Our workflow is to get the car up off the wheels, keep the suspension loaded, and digitize the spindle (if there's a spare spindle or upright assembly, that's easier to digitize on the surface table), brake rotor, and any interfering suspension parts. From this we make a solid model to get a perfect fit against the spindle, and generate the CNC cutting profile for the hats.
Pricing would depend on the quantities needed, as well as how complicated they have to be to clear the moving suspension & steering parts. I'm not a vendor on this board, so I don't want to step on anyones toes - just wanted to expand on what John and tomspo04 mentioned above.

Here's a screenshot of the digitizing we did for the Wilwood FSL caliper bracket prototypes on the Z28tt...

You can change that real easy. Nice product.
Nice stuff but a bit pricey for the average Joe. Just a note I built my own and its not too difficult. welcome to the site Andris.

It'll be interesting to see the final product. My remarks were based on the pictures posted on the website. Billet sounds much better...
