View Full Version : Question about C5 calipers

I just put on C5 brakes using the touring classics bracket and GMpartsdirect calipers and parts. My question is this...Is there supposed to be something holding the pads on the calipers? I put the pads in the abutement brackets and slid on the caliper, but the pads seem loose. There is nothing on the pads like on the C4 pads to hold them in? There is no way they are going to fall out or anything, but it seems like there may be an extra part I need.

Thanks,
Jason

Do you have the thin metal shims between the abutments and the pads? GM pads come with the shims included, or Napa sells them seperately. Heres a link. (http://www.napaonline.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ExecMacro/NAPAonline/search_results_product_detail.d2w/report?prrfnbr=28502201&prmenbr=5806&usrcommgrpid=98214509) There are 3 shims per side, 1 at each end of the pad located on the abutments and 1 that clips into the caliper.

The pads are not "attached" to the calipers at all, though.

Thanks for the reply! I do have some shims with adhesive on one side that came with the pads. I just wanted to be sure there were no springs or clips I was missing.

Do the shims go on the inner or outer pad? Or both?

Thanks

Jason,

What did you pay for those calipers at gmpartdirect.com? Can you give me a part number?

Thanks

If I recall the calipers were about $80 each. I am at work right now :banghead: so I cant get the part number. I'll look later when I get home. Also the drilled and slotted rotors were pretty cheap as well $40-$50. They were a few dollars cheaper than the regular rotors.

Ill post back later with the part numbers

Do you have the shims marked #2 and #11 on this drawing? (http://chris96ws6.mtfba.org/c5brakes/Brake%20Brackets/Cailiperexplode.PNG) Those are the ones you need, they don't have adhesive so.....

Indy,
I can get those part #s for you later Im at work again!

Mark,
No those parts do not come with the calipers. The calipers come with nothing, except the banjobolt and bleed screw. I wish they did, but I did order them from napa.

So you didn't get "loaded" calipers?

Does anybody know if you can get #3 buy itself? I already have the others. If not, does the NAPA part # include all 6 total? Thanks,

I've put 5k miles on my C5 setup with no shims...didn't know I needed them! I havn't had any problems, but I guess I'll go pick a set up.

Jeff, #3 is the outer pad assembly, so I assume you mean the shim that is on the outer pad? I don't know where to get them, but I assume they're out there-I bought Hawk pads and they were attached, do your pads not have them?

Oh, and the Napa kit is per side, you need two kits(at 20 bucks a pop) per car. I puckered a little at that, but couldn't find another source(GM only sells them with their pads). I figured I got it back by using Napa's C5 rotors -$25 each, still cracks me up that you can get 13" directional rotors that cheap. Rockauto has them even cheaper!

Jeff, I've been meaning to email you, I'll be in touch soon.

Brian,
I meant part #11, sorry about that! I may just go with the side shims if I can, they are the rear brakes if that makes any difference as to importance of that 1 middle shim. Email is changing to [email protected]

Indy,
Sorry for the delay...I had computer problems and have been trying to fix that (actually bought a new computer). I cant seem to find my list of part numbers right now, but I promise I will post back when I find them.
