Whats the rule of thumb? Thicker in the front? What if the rear was thicker, how would that affect things? TIA

Front is usually bigger on a front engine car. If the rear was larger, the car would oversteer. A good example of what works is to look at kit makers or what the factory did on high perf or police cars.

You will find on the aftermarket several huge rear bars that are specifically intended for dragstrip benefit. Their only benefit is for straight line racing, where they will help equalize the rear tire loading (by drawing a larger proportion of the engine torque reaction rearward to offset the driveshaft torque that unloads the right rear).

Keep in mind that if you use any of the tall B-body spindle conversions for the GM A/G body, a smaller front swaybar is generally recommended over the ones for standard front ends because the improvements make the car turn in much better and a really large front bar could end up with a lot of oversteer.
