:headbang: Looks great! few questions did you buy it the way it sits? what type of money? and is it a direct bolt up or do you gotta do alot of mods?

Mike Holleman
07-10-2007, 03:58 PM
If it handles as good as it looks it will be sweet. Needless to say there is a bunch of work ahead of me to get it on the street. When I get the body set for fitment I'll do some updated photos.

JT, What you see is exactly how Jeff sent it to me. I bought the wheels and tires from him so it could be rolling on delivery. It will bolt up as far as mounting the body but yes there is a ton of mods to make it all come together. Some of the components are Sweet rack and pinion, Winters 9" center section w/Currie third member with 3.70s, Wilwood 14" 6 pistons up front and 13" 4 pistons out back. Forgeline ZX3R wheels, 18 X8 in front and 18x10 rears. Jeff had the chassis power coated in gun metal gray. I don't want to talk money on an open forum. Jeff can tell you what it would cost. He is a sponsor of this site and is at www.schwartzperformance.com.

To bad you have to cover that one up with the body!! I saw the small article in the new Super Rod, they are making a very good looking product and I am sure it will handle better than it looks, if that is possible.

I couldn't agree more Craig. Too bad the body isn't transparent. I do expect to have an El Camino that will surprize folks on a road course. It will get the chance to do just that. I do believe in driving a car hard.

I'm sure there will be fitment issues, they always are in a custom build. The worst part is I am about a month away from finishing a 66 Chevelle for a customer and it takes priority over my build. Basically this means I get to work on mine on the weekends. I will update the progress with pictures.

Mike, can't wait to see the pic's after all the fab work is done, then the car hits the track!! Good luck, please keep us posted. I have put my Chevelle on the back burner for now, I have looked at running a frame complete from Schwartz, interested on what type of fab work it does take to incorporate this chassis. Regardless of the work, it will be well worth it I am sure!

Dale, I am the director of a major eastcoast surfing contest that takes place the last weekend of July. My days are spent on my car and nights on the contest. That weekend to me is like April 15th to a CPA. Once it's past I can breath again. So no Goodguys until after July. The rack is a Sweet Manufacturing unit. Like most of the components on this build it is a racing part. Schwartz used mostly circle track stuff. Has a Winters nine inch aluminum rear with Coleman hubs.
Thanks,
Mike

It's been on hold this month, I gave my son the 81 Z28 I've had since new for graduation. He wanted to get it running and drive it before leaving for Marine basic on the 23rd so I've been knee deep in that. The car sat in the barn for 19 years but we've got it going now and just about debugged.

I don't know how it came thru in the video but this thang is loud. And the little short exhaust system and Spintechs won't make it tone down a bunch.

I hope you are right Bill. Everyday I seem to find another issue that sends me backwards. The flavor of the day was finding a small seam leak on my new SS fuel tank. So it's back out of the car and get the gas and fumes out so it can be welded. My speedo and tach are not working. Nothing like going 200 MPH while sitting on the lift in neutral. I told you that you can drive it. I stuck the Spintechs on it and ran it. Still loud but not off the charts. I did stick it in gear today and let the wheels roll on the lift. Clutch seems good. Brakes feel like crap. More work needed. I will try to get it out of the building for a few shots tomorrow. I have not yet messed with the ride height. It has good adjustment left up and down.

I did drop the rear about an inch. It's still slightly higher than the front. All the moving around is making it all settle. I've had to remove the lift spacers so the arms will move under the chassis now. No telling how much change could happen after a little hard driving. Soon it will all become clear.

The clear laid down real nice. It is being wet sanded and polished as I type. I was a little uneasy about the color combo, but it looks like a good choice now that it is done and is all glossy. Lower is a dark metalic gray, upper a red with a thin sliver stripe and black pin stripe breaking up the two. Will post more pics later.

Your Camino looks fantastic, Mike. Please don't think I was being a d*ck, I was just commenting on how cool yours is going to look cleared, cut, and buffed. By contrast, the GTO we did is staying flat or a combination flat / cleared.
Didn't think that at all Kevin. Thanks for the kind words. I seriously considered flat/suede paint. My painter talked me out of it. The gray we used was a match for the gunmetal centers on the Forgelines. The red is a Ferrari shade that I used when the Elky was originally built sevens years ago. As you know, it is very hard to do a paint scheme that hasn't been done. We tried to break the colors on a different line than what I had seen done. I did the rear much like the front, following the fender line. From the front or rear the Elky will look solid red. I built this one less for looks than for performance. If it looks good that's just gravy.

Thanks Jeff, I think this one will do your chassis proud.

I'm sure.
FYI, In recent testing Randy Johnson's LS7 66 Chevelle did 1.08 Lat G. with basically the same Schwartz Chassis
Thanks

Thanks Wayne. I don't know if you caught it but the red was not even repainted. It's Imron and looked too good to redo after even 7 years and 25,000 miles. So we just sanded it and cleared over. The hood may get some work later, but time is tight to make RTTH 4.

Well she's back home and painted. I drove her the five miles from my buddy's shop to mine. All seems well so far. Here are some pics.

Thanks Kevin. I'm pretty excited about having it roadworthy real soon. Alot has to happen between now and the 12th for it to make a trip like PF and the RTTH. Got a few mechanical issues to deal with and a trip to Raleigh for tuning. The speedo said 36 MPH at 2200 in fifth gear. My son was behind me doing 60. And it's real loud. Little short system with Spintech sportsman mufflers. Not sure I'll keep that for long.

I just came in from the shop. As long as no unexpected mechanical issues surface, I'll make it. Hopefully all will be done by the end of the week.

I finally got the dyno tuning done today. She made 445 RWHP and 400 pound feet of torque. We limited the revs to 6600 and it was still climbing in HP. Test drive was great. No drivability issues. It feels real strong going thru the gears.

Congrats on some very impressive numbers! Who did you finally get to tune it? I really like your two-tone paint job (I've been slack lately and not checking in to the board..... I just saw your pics <<<<<<DROOOOOOOL>>>>>>>). Looks great!!

I wish I had seen your post before last weekend.... I would loved to have snapped a few shots of it. A friend of mine and myself shot a wedding two weekends and would have been a great time to 'steal' a few shots. It was a very busy weekend though! Congrats again!

Ryan at RPM Performance in Garner. I highly recommend him. He knows his way around an LS engine. The numbers were above my expectations. What is most satisfying is drivability. It seems to be doing everything right. Curly, head down to the Morehead waterfront on Sat. Second annual Crystal Coast Car Show. The Elky will be there to be looked at, but not judged. I'm head judge so my cars are not eligible. Wasn't built for showing anyway.

It is definately the quickest car I have ever driven. During the test drive the Tuner said stand on it once. I whacked it in first and all hell broke lose. The Tuner said " well first gear is useless."

I may do that... my wife does anything to get back 'home' (which is anywhere in the beach area) so I'm sure she wouldn't give any fight to going :yeah: . As far as tuners, I have never heard anything but good things from RPM. They have quite a few FAST shop cars to show for their LSx knowledge.

He had a Trailblazer in there with an LSX, I think built by Tom Nelson that made 710 RWHP. Said it was the worlds fastest Trailblazer.

Pictures do this build no justice! I was in Morehead, NC today at the Crystal Coast Grand Prix car show and saw it in person and it looks great!

Mike, I was going to introduce myself to you (I talked to a guy that was with you... was sitting behind the 'elky) but you looked busy at the judges table. Looks like they had a good turn-out for the car show and there were several cars there that my wife caught me drooling over.

I'll try to get some updated shots today. It is running great and is cosmetically finished. Still chasing little issues. I drove it yesterday to a local car show just to display it as I was head judge. It caught a great deal of attention even though it was parked way to the side and out of the general show area. People sure seemed to like it but I don't think they quite knew what it was all about. I did meet Restomod from this site. He seemed to know what he was looking at. Were you there Curly?

Sure was (see my post above)! I menatlly put my 'dream car' together with two vehicles that were there... a blue '64 Chevelle and your drivetrain! I'm sure most people don't know anything about what is under it, which is what I think is the most interesting part! I talked to a co-worker of mine while standing <drooling> over the 'elky and he thought it was a neat ride also (especially after I pointed a few things such as the chassis and engine combo). RPM posted a few pics of it on horsepowerjunkies.com and it is a hit over there also.

Thank you Steve. I am pretty happy with the finished product. Missing RTTH did suck. You will see it at some point. Still dealing with a few issues with the SW gauges we discussed. Speedo is doing exactly what your's is. If you find a fix please let me know and I'll do the same.

Thanks for posting those Curly. I have not yet taken a shot with the front bumper on. By the way the bumper is a fiberglass piece from VFN that we customized with a spoiler. It is made into a single unit with all fiberglass mounts and bracing. The parking lights are stock but mounted behind the bumper with a smaller hole. In the spoiler we mounted a pair of PIA driving lights. I enjoyed looking at the posts on horsepowerjunkie.com. The guys at RPM really liked the car and I appreciate their pictures and posts. If you have time post a front view on there as there were questions about the lack of bumper. It went to the tuners without the bumper because of concerns of tie down clearance.
Thanks again.Mike
