Does anyone know if Tyler completed the 68 Camaro project 50/50 car? Any more recent pictures than on the ATS website?

Yeah, he pulled a "There's Something About Mary" joke, and now his hair won't go back to normal.

As for the car, I think he's just too busy to work on it with his day job and all.

I was kind of wondering about this project too. I guess I just assumed that the business was keeping him too busy to work on it - good assumption I guess.

Hell - I don't even have a business to run and I can't finish any of my crap!

Ugh. I was hoping that this thread would just slide out of the main page, but people keep asking so here's the skinny:

Back in 2002 the chassis was completed by Wayne Due and it was shipped to a company called Ctek in Newport Beach, CA. They did the clay work to develop our body kit and were supposed to produce our final tooling for production parts.

They did concept vehicles for Ford and are the same company that made the 05 Mustang show car. Well they started invoicing Ford for labor that they hadn't actually done, so when the big wigs dropped in to see progress, they were pissed to see a $900,000 invoice with no work completed. They pulled all projects out of Ctek and walked away from them completely.

Ctek was now in financial trouble and started invoicing me for my body kit, stating it was completed, and final toolong was made. I went to Newport beach that night with a truck and trailer to get 50/50 out and back to the shop.

When we got there, none of the molds were production quality, the body panels they made were fiberglass, not carbon fiber, and they were attempting to prep the panels before i arrived to cover them in a layer of carbon (I assume for looks, since it was 99% fiberglass). They also accidenly threw out some of the parts that Wayne had put in the car to the tune of almost $9K.

I was pissed at this point, and did the same thing Ford did. I pulled my project out, took my molds and prototype parts and left. I had paid well over $20K to be at that point, and now had no production parts or molds to speak of.

The company went under, and all the employees who worked there were let go. 3 of the guys who did the work on my car contacted me to complete it. I was excited to get it back into the hands of skilled fabricators who were intimate with the car already, so I shipped 50/50 to a small house in Garden Grove, CA where the crew were going to complete the body kit.

Keep in mind that the chassis, frame rails, floor and sheetmetal were all bare steel from Wayne Due during this process.

I pay these former ctek employees to complete the car to the tune of $25K. I wait over a year to see progress and finally had to pull the car back to Vegas. When I went to get the car, it had been sitting outside for well over a year within 2 blocks of the ocean. The entire car was now covered in brown rust from head to toe. The body kit was not completed, the molds were crap, and the parts were terrible.

So now I was out $50K for a body kit, the sheetmetal is destroyed, and I lost over 3 years of time in it.
It has been under a car cover for the last 2 years in my garage and I haven't even thought about it, worked on it or touched it since.

We do have clients cars that are taking up most of our time and space so I wouldn't have been able to make progress on it anyways, plus our product line has been keeping us very busy.

I will be getting the car back into the shop later this year, but we have also just picked up a 67 Camaro shop car that we have named the Chicane-LM Camaro. The plan is to build a 90% bolt on car that uses our front suspension, an LS1/T56 drivetrain and some killer brakes. We will then allow our client base to drive our shop car at events so they can see if they like the way it handles/drives etc.

Sorry for the long drawn out post, but I though you guys should know why it has taken me so long to complete. On a side note none of the other 1st gens that I know of that have the C5 layout with the transaxle have been completed either so I might still be the first guy to get one done.

WOW.......no offense, but after they totally screwed you over at the previous place, you actually let those guys touch your car again? Regardless of them just being employees, its not like they didnt know what was going on and they helped it happen.

I mean it sucks what happened to you at Ctek, but I would think that after a bad experience like that, a person would be much more cautious about who they pay to work on their car, and also check up on the progress way more frequently either in person or by demanding lots of digital photos atleast on a monthly basis before you ever wrote another check.

Well I hope the project turns out ok for you in the end, best of luck!

Hey Tyler,

Why not let the company that did Red Witch's hood do your body kit?
They did a great job and have a good reputation with members of this board and they have proven they can work w/ CF.

Just a suggestion from another fan that would love to see this project completed.

Wow. Not sure how significant 25-50K is for you but I'd be filing a lawsuit.

... It doesnt do you any good if they cant pay up. Just think about Ford Motor Company... they walked away from almost $1M... and I think they knew they would never see it, so they just wrote it off. But dont think Ctek didnt take a beating for bending Ford over.

The snatch and grab from Ctek was a hoot. Boy-o-boy was the owner a true idiot. If Tyler told the whole story about what we went through to get the car out of there... he would have this place in stiches.

That really sucks Tyler, that is the thing I hated most about a project leaving your car in somebody else's hands. Hopefully you will make back the lost money and finish 50-50 one day, your original LT1-T56 combo inspired my build alot. And I give you full props for where you have taken ATS.

I know it's probably a waste of time, but did you get any agreements in writing? If so then you would have a case to get back some money.

Good luck bud.

does 50/50 run though? i say forget the body kit. it looked awesome but the car can be conceived as a "stage 1" 50/50 with just a good clean stock 68 body with a sleeper surprise chassis. i just wanna see how well the car runs with some numbers.

but we should all take out our baseball bats and find those dudes.

Tyler's woes aside, this illustrates just how fly-by-night and fickle this industry can be. Some of the worst offenders are in the import 'tuner' shops... wow I've seen some really bad stuff there. The real crappy part is that for every bad deal or ripoff out there, 2/3rds come from young shops that bite off more than they can chew.

We're actually lucky to have so many shops and vendors that deliver. Look at the list of sponsors on the right; I would bet that many of you have had a good or great experience from at least one or two of them. I started to type a list, then realized that I was listing a bunch of the sponsors!

Tyler- I'm feeling ya, man. I've had my Firebird off the road for 8 years now. In 2006, I finally gained some steam (the only year I deployed for lest than 2 months). Then 2007 came, 10.5 months of it in Iraq. Now, the Navy has seen fit to send me up to Maine without my wife and kids (umm...and my Firebird) for about 2 years. This **** is getting old. SO, maybe RTH V will be my unveiling.

Maybe this will make you feel better:
My bird, circa 1998 (camera date FUBAR'd)
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/01/JohnchallengerFbird1-1.jpg

May 2006 My son still very un-impressed with my progress: I will say that was the day I built the body cart & began the minitub install. At least the coilover conversion, MT's & Qlink are done...(after the picture was taken)
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/01/Apr06c012-1.jpg

Thanks for letting us know- If I'm ever out near Vegas, I'd be happy to come turn a wrench or do some custom wiring for ya.

There is finally an end to long tale of what happened to 50/50. I moved the car out of my garage in August to a storage spot down the street. The plan was to un-clutter my shop, and get some good useable space in my house. I went to grab a mock up display there last night and to my surprise my unit no longer had a lock on it.

I bet you can guess what I'm about to say next.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/11/xarmo2-1.jpg

So I roll up the sliding bay door to take peak and my heart sinks. 50/50 has been stolen. It looks like a bomb went off inside my storage unit. They took the car, the body kit, the HRE wheels, the drivetrain; everything but some old displays from SEMA, a tool box full of hardware and a few chairs. Even better than that was there is another 68 RS/SS sitting on a trailer OUTSIDE 14 feet from my unit that was left alone

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/11/260u34z-1.jpg

I called the police, who told me to come down and file a report (they wouldn't even send a unit over to dust for prints) called the storage space manager to have them review the security tapes and went home. Got a call this morning that it was stolen by flatbed over 3 weeks ago around 4pm in the afternoon. Even have pics of the truck and guys who took it. I have little hope that it will be recovered as anything but a shell, and I can kiss those HRE wheels good bye. Keep your eyes peeled though, and call my shop if you have seen or heard anything about it.

That car and period of my life is dead to me now. I don't really want it back anymore now that it has been ransacked and mistreated by yet another group of people.

From here on out just leave this car be. I don't want to talk about it ever again. Thanks for letting me vent.

I was once in a race with myself to get my car done before Tyler and then job situations changed,I bought a house and moved . Then I got a bunch of stuff done and then the guy who was working on it got cancer [oh yea that was me]. I was still in the running to get done before Tyler once I got over my obsession to have all of the things I want but don't need to just get the car on the road.

I am still in shock to learn it was stolen. Worse yet that the police are so lame. The work that was done on that car will always be like a fingerprint even without tags. I know that I will notice just pieces of that car if they show up somewhere else.

The drama can make you sick or just fall over crying and trying to laughing at yourself on the floor. Either way , picking up the pieces takes a certain amount of light on the subject after things get put in the dark. It is a closed door subject and a sad ending.

LOLZ.

So this was obviously a joke. Funny to some, others not so much.

Just in case anyone is skimming and not reading each post:

The 50/50 Camaro was not stolen. It is at Ironworks Speed and Kustom.

I hope I didn't piss too many people off with my little 'Overhaulin' type story. The pic I posted is of Rodger Lee, owner of Ironworks. He picked up 50/50 while out at the SEMA show, and he is going to breathe new life into the car. He and I had the idea to tell people who ask about it that it was stolen, so we ran with it. It picked up more steam than I thought it would in such a short time, I even saw mass emails circulating about it already. For that I apologize. We have a great community here, tons of people willing to help out a stranger; I didn't mean to decive, just wanted to have a little fun with a project that at times got the best of me.

The first hint of my car going to Ironworks actually came out in Rich Allen's thread. Rodger slipped my car into the background of one of his updates. Brent Dupont, Rich Allen, Mick etc picked up on it rather quickly, but few others did. Here is the post for reference:
http://www.lateral-g.net/forums/showpost.php4?p=176433&postcount=178

The plan is to cut out the entire chassis and start over. Ironworks will be redoing the front and rear chassis, body and sheetmetal.

Ok. I have confessed. Ready for my flaming and public beating.

Here is a similar post about it at Lateral-g:

There really is no substitute for youthfull enthusiasm. Thank God!

At the risk of being misunderstood...this extreme build style is a mirror of where Street Rodding went about 15 years ago, and Pro Street went 25 years ago...with a new, more serious and purposeful twist.
One of the crucial things needed to build a successful car that knock everyone off their feet is to be completely unafraid of not conforming. I don't think there is any doubt about that with these two...on any front.

Good luck Roger and Tyler...this will be great!

You are going to give up the composites aren't you?

I'm surprised Tito Jones pulled this prank. Seems more like something his alter ego Tyler Beauregard would pull.

I'm just seeing this for the first time. Good for you Tyler, that ride in Steves car got the fire lit under your a**. Wait until you get to pound on 50/50 from behind the drivers seat. Driving my P.O.S. is better than any drug I have experienced and believe me I have had plenty.

You freakin' douche! I was all set you roll down the 99 and lay down some beatings- haha! Man, I'm glad this was a joke- when I saw the frame pic w/ the green/white fender in the background, I was like -- Hey, WTF??!!
I'm glad Ironworks is doing it, but I had a car stolen (never covered), so I was feelin' WAY bad for you.
Oh well, can't wait to see the results...

Now that it's in progress again, any other details or changes from the original concept? When it's done let Dave wring it out with you, then you'll know "That's how deep you're supposed to go?" LOL Good Luck! Todd

indeed. You had me going. I was hoping to get a chance at busting someone up good over it. *puts his 2 foot breaker bar away* At last 50/50 will get done. One more "figurehead" car will get its rightful place in the sun, right up there with MotiV8er. It's cool to see all these cars coming together after so long.

Is Project 50/50 going to be built using all of ATS's go fast goodies(i.e. ATS front clip, LD's 3-link) or not?
