View Full Version : Doing an OEM paint color story.. who here used an OEM color rather than a custom one?

And what are the hot OEM colors out there right now.
I'm doing ones like the Subaru blue my '69 was painted and the new Atomic Orange.
What else is hot?
Thoughts?
Also looking for cool silvers and "earth tones"
Good high res shots might get used in the story to illustrate :)

I used 1968 Pontiac April Gold, which is a gold with a slight green-hue to it. Looks great & it's different. The interior is also April Gold. Looks great when you open the doors- the accent lighting really shows the color when ya open the doors.
I used a modern two-stage formulation for it, so the sheen is actually a lot deepr than the original. Although it's not Resale red, it gets many compliments. When the car is een by the rest of the world, that is.
I have some pics- if you didn't throw up at first mention of the color. It really is a cool blend of gold & green.

No pics yet- heading into the body shop next month after my dyno session and a little thrash. I agree though- earth tones and the use of flat / semi gloss paints are red hot, at least i hope so. lol

If I ever get top paint my car, the top 2 pics at present moment are:
1. 04 Pontiac GTO Barbados Blue
2. 80s Monte Carlo SS Blue
I really like the new blues that seem to have a gray tint to them to give them a "slate" color, I think that fits with your earth tone theme.

I went with an OEM color; in fact, I chose the original color of my Mach: Bright Gold Metalic. It's not exactly "gold", but I think it's classic, vintage, and after nearly 40 years almost timeless. It provides excellent contrast for both darker acccents panels and trim and with brightwork and wheels. It's subdued but punchy (especially after I get it wetsanded and polished), and it isn't a belly button color or trendy (say like silver/pewter). It ain't exactly the nicest paint job, but I like it and it was cheap cheap cheap! Here are a couple pics:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://img72.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img0640smallqn4.jpg) https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif (http://img204.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img0619smallen2.jpg)
... and when the light hits it:

On my '57 Chevy I'm planning to use a blue similar to those already discussed here. On the quarter panels inside the stainless trim, where the textured sheet usually goes I plan to paint Ford Ivory Parchment Metallic. I can't find a good example of it online but it's approximately the color of the old "flesh" colored Crayola crayons.

That's funny that Lexus color comes up, I was going to use that as my stripe color on my racecar but it's a tri-coat and supposedly would build up too much.
I'm the man for OEM colors, especially blues and reds. I've painted two cars in the last few years and looked at a million colors on cars in parking lots/dealerships/on the road.

I think straight dark blue is the color this year. Every new Street Rod is blue with red interior. I can get you PPG codes but here are my choices:
1. 2006 Saturn blue/green flops from blue to green amazing for stock color.
2. 2007 Honda Civic navy blue
3. Land Rover 2007/08 gold/orange brighter and golder than 2006 orange.
4. And my favorite is the green on the bottom 1/2 of my Rambler. It is one year only 2004 Hummer/Cavalier green color that is so ugly that it is nice. There isn't a person who looks at it that doesn't think it is custom mix. Flops from green to gold to black. Lot of pearl. I picked it simply because it was near the black that I wanted. My pics are too big???
The best colors are the euro colors that we do not get here. They have car names that I never even heard of and the colors are just wild. A lot more daring than we are here in the states. Pick up a PPG euro paint chip book. I could loan you a set but they are heavy to ship.

Thanks guys.. the story went in last week :)
The only problem with it is that there's SO MANY nice OEM colors to choose from.
I found my car would have cost over $500 more to paint in a custom color compared to using OEM prowler orange.
Oh and red is the most expensive solid color and silver is the least expensive metallic color.

My 70 will be a factory color. Too late for this, but I'd like to throw it in the hoop. Monterey Red Metalic, it's a new Corvette color, and it rocks. Big character change in the light, flops from medium red to black, or darned near, no gold/brown/funky hues. Just red, and dark red.
In my opinion, Lexus has the best colors out right now. Their midnight blue, which they call Black Sapphire Pearl, is amazing, and without question will be on a future car of mine.
Nothing wrong with a factory color, most folks think they are custom. Cheaper too (but nothing is cheap in terms of paint anymore...)
