Not sure of the answer right now but some 06' and all the 07' and newer Lexus cars also have this feature. If I have a chance next week I will see if I can get one of our techs to print up a schematic for it.

I'm currently working on this issue for my 69 Camaro. I'm going to put an Infiniti start button in it. Working on a circuit that will control state/stop function and will post a follow-up as soon as I have more information. ---Eric

this is what we came up with....illuminated switch too. https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/showthread.php?t=13944&highlight=push+start+button

This is something else I have been thinking about again. On your setup Vince does it start/shut off the car or just start?

I'm thinking it is more complicated than you guys think. Hopefully I'm wrong, but all the push-button-start cars I've seen run the signals through the computer. The switch is simple.

Some how it needs to kill the starter when it reaches some RPM and quit after some number of seconds if it doesn't start. Is that kind of what you are thinking? I have never driven a car with a start button but assumed that's what it did.

We should have Electric Lifes new Push to Start system Debut in Project EmptyNest. Stay tuned. It is not finished yet and SEAM is tomorrow, well kinda tomorrow!

heh, I've been thinking of doing this for a long time. I was going to wire it up with a toggle switch (the aircraft style with the big red cover). The toggle switch would give power to the entire ignition system, so that would have to be on, then hitting the button would start the car. Then flipping the switch would kill the engine. I do like your guys' idea better, though, about having a key right in the center console. Sounds pretty sick.
I guess I'll wait for SEMA to debut Electric Life's version, though.
And FWIW, I was going to use the switch from Ignited Performance. Looks like a pretty trick piece.

I was looking at putting the key in the center console and then it has to be in the "on" position for it to start, but a momentary push button for start with a latching relay so you push the button again and it would kill the engine... That's what I am thinking about..

It sounds like you want to implement a flip-flop; One push for On, another push for Off. The tricky part is that as long as you hold the button, it should power the starter, on the second push, it should not and should kill the engine electrical (to shut down the engine).
This can be done with relays, but I would highly recommend you look at digital logic circuits. There are some really good examples on the web (for instance http://www.cpemma.co.uk/flipflop.html). If there is any interest, I can probably draw something up this weekend.
Below is a picture showing one possiblity using 6 relays. The relay Flip-Flop is based on a paper by Hendry and Perry (viewable here http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/picrender.fcgi?artid=1404185&blobtype=pdf)
The flip-flop itself requires 4 relays (A1, A2, B1, and B2). Relay C1 is used to power the ignition circuit of the engine (when the flip-flop is ON) or to shut-down the engine (when the flip-flip is OFF). Relay C2 is used to provide power to the starter for as long as the button is held, but ONLY if the flip-flop is in an ON state.
I would highly recommend that you test this circuit on a bench before implementing. I am NOT an electrical engineer (just an avid hoobbyist) and I am not clear as to the initial state of the flip-flop when it is powered-up, there is a possibility that it will power-up in the ON state, but since the starter only runs when the button is pushed, there should be no risk of the engine turning over.
I did this drawing in Visio. If anyone would like a copy, PM me and I will send it to you.
I also welcome feedback...there has got to be an EE or two viewing this board!

Thats pretty cool, I wonder if you could swap out the button for the honda one? Although it won't be lit.

I was wondering the same thing since you can just buy the relay. It says on the site that you can you your own momentary switch, so as long as the honda one is it should work. That would be my guess.
