Well guys, I've just finished an email exchange with John Drummond at Good Guys letting him know I'm withdrawing from SMOTY.
I just don't have the time and money for the preparation, travel, and lodging to make an honest effort of it. I appreciate very much all the words of encouragement, but I would need to devote the next 2 weeks to getting the car ready, plus another week for the event itself. I can't do it ... real life intrudes.
I'll be watching with keen interest to see who wins the big prize. I'm sure the other competitors are all breathing a huge sigh of relief now. :)
I'm now turning my attention to a local autoX, then a track event at Sebring, and then RTTH3.

This pains me to say, but I was really hoping to see you in the SMOTY event. I was rooting for a car like yours to beat the carpet cruisers.
Oh well. Race gas and burnt rubber smells better than zaino.

don't forget the Ring Bros...they already beat the Alloway/Lang's Mustang at SEMA....for what that's worth..and Morrison's vette should be right in there

Do NOT take my previous post as a slam towards TROY.He builds as good a car as anyone, and truthfully a damn sight better than a very large percentage of builders.I only stated my opinion about the Hurricayne(and we all know about opinions).

Yea, I finally went on the GG site to check out the contestants. I also forgot about AM's Vette and the Ring Brothers for that case, from what I can tell, it is probably between these two!

I hope who ever wins at least has drove the darn car... To be put in this contest does the car have to drive in under its own power? After all it is called Street Machine of Year Award. What a joke if it doesn't. :hah:

from what i have heard, in order for the car to be eligible for smoy it must be driven. i think the owner and one or more of the people that chose the cars must go for a cruise on fri. or sat. if the owner refuses to drive the car it will not be eligible for the award. that is just what i have heard i do not know if the info is 100% correct. if i am wrong, someone please correct me. but i do agree with you, the cars should be driven!:drive2:

IMHO this is the type of car that should win or least be in the top five.
It is truely a street build, along the lines of both yours and mine. Not a
million dollar build, however quality time and thought put into the project. Oh well, good guys (hehe) always watch from the sidelines. I'm not a trophy chaser anyways.

I've never heard of that. I'm at the awards presentation every year, and I don't recall that ever being stated.
I do remember they use to have to agree that the car would be driven, at least X amount of miles. But that was like 2 years ago, and I haven't heard them say anything about that lately. They probably dropped it. I'm sure some of the cars that win a Top 5 have basically zero miles on them.

Would loved to see that 2 Much be in there but I think you brought up a big issue which is it takes more than having a killer ride to win. You have to be the typ ethat wants to go through all the money and trouble in setting up and getting a "Show Car" to an event. Taking off from work, dragging the family, money for travel and lodging, etc. There are guys who love it and then there are guys like me who hate it. I know you really drove the thing so I do not see how you would compete with cars with just idle time.
Then there is all the BS of being in with the boys and the chosen few who get noticed.
Every car at a Goodguys event has to drive to win. You saved about $250k under whatever wins and got noticed just as much. The biggest reward is having someone you respect come up and tell you that you have a well built ride. Even better when you are parked next to one of the $500k guys who just lost. Two different cars and to each his own. I can appreciate both.

In other words it's a real car that can be driven? Sort of like mine.
IMHO this is the type of car that should be in the top five. Win is another story. It shouldn't always be about how much money can be spent. It sould help solidify that the little guy or small shop still has a chance.

I was in the finals with the Battle Axe 69 Camaro in 03 (lost to Chicayne) and won it in 06 with the Cuda...You have to drive around the park in bumper to bumper traffic is about as far as they carry it..Most of the judges are by the way sharp guys in this industry..like Bobby Alloway, Alan Johnson, Kyle Tucker, Bret @ Air Ride, Troy Trepanier, Fat Mans, **** @ Good Guys, etc etc. All of these guys (with arguably the exception of Alloway) are into driven cars. I had driven the Cuda quite a bit before Columbus and drove it daily to the show and back to the hotel. I think a good 50 mile drive in traffic would be an excellent idea.

Does anyone have a link to a complete list of the cars running for the SMOTY award? I only saw a handfull of cars on the Good-guys site. Mabey I just didn't search around enough.
John, too bad your not taking the Nova up there to compete. I went to the Des Moines show this past weekend and I don't understand how a guy who has built his own car can complete next to the pro's. My friend's wife tried to get me to park my Nova in the Pro's Pick area instead of the Homebuilt Heaven area. If you don't know me, my car is the 62 Chevy II with the Blue and Yellow two tone paint. About 2/3 down the page on Clark's page of pics.
http://picasaweb.google.com/cadoukas/2007DesMoinesGoodGuys
I couldn't get my car clean enough to compete with them. You would need a team of guys to clean and prep a car to get it into the same show condition as the top cars. I cleaned more those three days than I ever have and it still looked filthy next to those cars. I would have to take it apart and buff and polish everything again to look like those cars. It doesn't help that I've been putting a ton of miles on it these past three weeks tuning the fuel injection. It would take a lot of effort and time for a guy on his own to show a car next to the cars displayed buy a team of builders.
Bob, I saw it your Cuda last year at Indy, (when it wasn't raining) and it was incredible. How much time did the guys spend each day cleaning and detailing the car? How much time was spent the weeks prior to a show to get it ready?

Dennis -
I looked your car over on Friday, you were parked on the backside of the exhibit building, very nice ride. You have a lot of work in that one, love the molded in spoiler in the rear. We talked briefly to one of your buddies, he said you all drove from St. Louis, quite a trip. When you drive them, you have nothing to worry about when sitting next to those professional built rides, you can tell when ones are driven and which ones are not. Nice ride, hope to see you at GG Kansas.
BTW, did you happen to see all those enclosed trailers out in the parking lot!

Thanks. I wish I could say I drove it there from St. Louis but I did trailer it to the hotel. I have about 400 miles on it so far and just not comfortable enough yet to drive that far although I did drive about two hours later that night to get to my house from my uncle's where I dropped off the trailer. Usually it's a 45 minute drive but got stuck in construction traffic.
I did drive the car from the hotel to the show which was about a 28 mile round trip. Not a big deal but we still ran through water and dirt on the way. You just can't get every thing clean enough after driving them.
I am going to Kansa City but won't be going to Columbus. None of my friends wanted to make the 8 plus hour drive since they have to drive them. My friends owned the orange 57 Chevy, the copper 67 Chevelle, and the red 70 Nova that were parked next to mine on Friday and Sunday. They don't even own trailers and refuse to put them on trailers. I hope to be weined from the trailer by the KC show. We are also going to go to Springfield Mo. for the Street Machine show a few weeks later. I don't like the Street Machine Nationals show as much as Goodguys events but it will be a guys only weekend without the wives and kids.
If you see my car, please introduce yourself, I'll be the short guy with glasses standing around the car, probably not cleaning it.
Later.

Yes, indeed. That was a big part of my decision. The time involved for that was a big deal to me. My car is pretty clean underneath, but it's had its share of leaks, dust, and water.
Anyway, these days, I'm getting the car prepped for an autoX this weekend. Can't wait!

Roger...no one is more guilty of this mandate than the bozo's that run the Riddler Award at the Detroit Autorama. Sadly though...this is what every show is about. Money, money, money.

Little people, the backyard mechanic and limited funds were/are where most creations occur. That show circuit sounds just like that- "a show". In Japan, one man got tired of the 3-ring circus otherwise known as Tokyo Auto Salon and started a show that is about the cars in all the categories. Trailer queens with zero kilometers are not welcome. The cars must be able to get to the show on their own power, show usage and it isn't about who has the most money. That man is Mr. Dai Inada. He's not just about imports, but loves American Muscle, as well. He's done the Golden State run numerous times and does attend Bonneville. Anyway, I agree. With unlimited funds, a nice backer, anybody can produce a museum art gallery car. Face it, cars are nothing more than a form of canvas, but as a lot of people agree on, cars are meant to be driven, meant to get bumps and bruises, meant to break down, meant to be repaired and meant to give the tuner something to always strive for. Without all that, there's no sense of accomplishment or pride. Money cannot buy pride.
