Hello fellow Road racers:drive1: .I have been lurking around here now for some time, but i havent done anything to the car so nothing new nothing written...

The car is a 76 chevelle, and it isnt pretty. But the main goal here is that the most of the universe think american cars wont work in the corners,so i figured that the worst scenario for a european or japanese car enhusiast are to be behind an American big sedan and particularly an ugly one:twothumbs .

Sleepers and underdog are also my thing,so here we go....

The first thing i had to do was getting the car registered. It was last reged in 97,and i got it for free then.It had no engine and trans, and had its share of rust.I took the engine/trans from an El camino i had.350 with Performer cam and performer rpm intake and a edelbrock 600 carburetor. The 350 trans had a shift kit, but overall a pretty original engine with new rings and bearings.

Rearend is the original 10 bolt wth limited slip and 2,73 or 3,08 gear.

The body has lost some weight in the form of the inner structure in the front end rear bumpers and the original seat has been replaced with 2 racing seats.Total weight now is 1800kg with full tank and me inside.

Original brakes and suspension.Only modification is wider wheels in the form of 7 inch rallye wheels that has been widened too 12,5 inches rear and 10 inches front.305x50 old euro radial ta rear and cooper 265x50 front.

On the track i had a best time of 2.02 and i am very impessed with it because a really good racing driver here in Norway, managed 1,48 with a 2005 Bmw m5.

And i havent begun installing suspesion upgrades:git: .I have a 461 big block with Edelbrock alu heads and a roller cam, that sits in the garage waiting to be installed.

The whole idea is to see how good/bad the american car works against modern cars,so maybe i should have done the suspension first and then installed big block power.

Time will see.The next track day is 24/26-8.I havent got any plans for the suspension yet.Its too many alternatives out there.Global west have in my thugt the best rear trailing arms, because of no bind and good suspension travel.

I have Koni shock absorbers lying in the garage and a 11/8 front sway bar.Front tubular arms is a must i think, but i am not sure what brand i should buy.

I have also a set of 17 inch wheels, but they have the wrong backspace.

i will listen to all ideas to give this car better suspension, whitch will give the non american crowd somthing too fear:enguard:

Hi fellow Viking :)

Nice project u'r having there, I have a 64 myself that I intend to do a bit of racing with. My dream is passing my friends Skyline and another friends Ferrari 512. :1st:

How does the suspension of the 76 compare to the terrible 64 suspension? I look forward to upgrades... :bananna2:

Anyway, lets put those BMW's and rices to the test. Good luck!

Big thanks:bananna2: for the replies...Have been to Turkey on vacation, and have seen lot of american cars there.Good reason to go there..

A:fingersx: nd howdy fellow viking.Where do you come from?

The suspension on the 76 Chevelle are almost the same as a 64,but a bit more advanced. The 76 Chevelle shares its front suspension with the 70-81 Camaro and Trans am and the 77-96 Caprice -impala ss,and of course all its sisters and brothers in the rest of the Gm.

However.Your 64 can be tweaked a lot with new parts, and you have a car that are around 300 kgs lighter than mine.

We had a street legal meeting in a town nearby, and my best time was 10.699,but i fell asleep at the startline,so had i been awake i could have reached 10.3.Its a big heavy car and almost original,so i am pleased with the result.

Thanks:cool: ,but telling them something about Cale Yarborough is like telling them nothing.Nascar isnt big here in scandinavia. But i know what you mean, and i have a 76 Laguna front waiting to bee copied in glassfibre. With a little higher profile wheels in the front and some cutting in the front fenders it would have looked almost the same as his car:cool: .

The biggest result comes from beating them on the track. So i dont brave that much and slowly slowly catch their back....

There are alot of american cars around here, but none on the track,so the jap/euro crowd have something right when they tell that our cars dont fix the turns.we must beat them. Then we can get respect...

Cool car, nice to see something different. I'm not too familiar with these cars so without the quarter windows, does that make it the equivalent of an AMX??

There was much rust around the quarter windows,so i just got rid if them and welded a plate in the holes where they were.It differs it from the others.

But the first Amx had no backseat, but This Chevelle has.I use this car daily,so its nice to have backseat when i need to have more peple than 2 with me.

Learned yesterday thet my 461 bigblock wasnt that fresh in the cylinders.Opened it up to install roller cam and found out that the seller who promised me newly bored cylinders was lying or was blind.

So new pistons have been ordered and maybee i have the engine together in some weeks. Now it will get bored to 468 and get a compression of 10,4 to 1.Hydraulic roller cam and edelbrock alu heads.performer rpm airgap and a 850 carburetor.New coated hooker comp headers and 3 inch exhaust system.

But the suspension must wait to next year. This will cost.....Will get the engine balanced and stress honed.

i got a nice deal on a set of qa1 coilovers the other day.Just 500 dollars and yes.4 of them, but they have been used:ssst: ..

Endless options of adjustability, but they have been mounted on a 87 Montecarlo before, and on the web site to qa1 its obvious that they dont deliver their shocks for my car or another car with the same suspension.Just shocks without springs. But i have been using shocks from a 78 malibu on 77caprice and the 78 malibu and 87 Monte share the same frame,so i will look forward and see if they fit when i get them.

The Corvette brakes?.Will they be bolt on or must i use another spindle?.

There has been something done the last month. The block has been completely dismantled, and laid in a acid bath.It has been used in a boat before,so there was some rust in the water jackets.

Tried first with some old rusted wheels, and they came out like brand new ones:naughty: .

Forged speed pro pistons with 060 overdimension have arrived,so the macihneshop will have something to do when i arrive with 5 engines and cranks:bananna2:

Had another 454 block and a 400 and 2 4bolt 350 lying around,so to cut costs i will have all of them bored and done.

Since last time i have been to another meeting at the Arctic circle racetrack.it was arranged llast weekend and it turned out great, but there wasnt as much people as it use to bee.Maybe the weather was the reason, but it was really slippery out on the track..:drive2:

Real fun,and i tried other american cars too.A plymouth barracuda with a 340 and a 79 mustang with 350 chevy engine and 4,11 gear. The Barracuda has a new firmer feel steering box and some other mods, and it was a fun car,but it was understeering in the turns.Maybe a bigger swaybar and another type of tires will cure that,or what joakim:naughty: ?.

The mustang has been modified ta rallycross car end wasnt set up as an corner carving car,but it has a lot of potential with some work in the suspension. The 4,11 gears wasnt exactly the right choice for ACR.It was screaminh before the long straights had begun..

The trans in the Chevelle has led a long hard life, and it showed diring the track days.Maybe i should have mounted an extra cooler, because it slips when it is warm now...

The new trans is almost finished. Its an 4l80e,that will be mounted when the engine is built,so i can live with the trans for som months...

The 4 bolt block was JUNK:machine: .One cylinder had been sleeved and there was a big hole in behind the sleeve.A lot of the threads for the cylinder heads had lifted up,so i have been looking for another 4 bolt block the last months.

Good thing that i had the acid bath:hail: .

Found one yesterday, but it is supposedly in a good shape with a standard bore, and i have 0,60 pistons.

The transmission guy called today, and the 4l80e is not an e anymore.its an m:drool: .Manual shifting only. Will buy a converter with 2500 in stallspeed.

You should check out www.scandc.com for parts. Mark knows his stuff and is considered by many (including myself) to be the go to guy for the 64-72 a-body stuff. I know yours is a 76 but I imagine there are many parts that will work for your car as well.

A year since i posted here...Last year, the 468 got some scratches in 2 cylinders after some mishap i did myself when mounting pistons on the rods..not to myself..dont do things you cant:)..

So this year i have built up a 468 with the same pistons as last year(they where unharmed)with a 4 bolt 454 block, and forged crank and eagle rods..got it together a month ago,and will try to do more suspension upgrades now, when the engine is up and go.

I`m leaning towards Detroit Speeds suspension pieces front and rear, when i start.Anyone that have done it on a 73-77 Chevelle?

I agree. Post more often. I read through the entire thread and really enjoy what your doing with the car especially due to it being a '73-'77 A-body like my Grand Am. I dont know if you have purchased suspension parts yet, but I would contact Global West. I have been using thier parts on my car for years. If you are interested in a long travel coil-over kit for the front, they have one available now for our cars. They used my frame as the template for the package. It would make a big difference for you. I am planning to be doing the same type of events as you are very soon. Keep the information coming.

Yep..i will post more often. The reason i havent done so,is that i use the Chevelle on a daily basis alot.So upgrades have been scarce,as the gas is expensive(10$ a gallon..and climbing)..and in using money for gas or parts,i have chosen gas..as there arent any more fun than using your bigblock:seizure::seizure:.

Oh yeah..rear tires seem to disappear too..

And i will look for the long travel coil over kit..right now!!.I have been into your thread,i guess some time ago..i remember your deal with Global west.. i often find the A bodys project threads from this years interesting, and i like to see what others have done.
