a lot of people are doing black...if the body is straight and you put the time in, it appears to come out good.

I wetsanded yesterday and applied coat 2. Taking shape. I am going to let the sun bake in the CA sun. Wed I will sand again and coat 3. I will post pics of coat 2 this afternoon.

Hey Dustin!

When you wetsanded the first coat did you cut through it pretty quick! I'm doing this to the hood of my T-Bird to see how it works but the first coat seemed kind of thin so I put a second coat on. Got any pics after you wetsanded the first coat?

The mopar guys suggest putting 2 coats then wetsanding. Also, the paint being dry is a big issue.

My first sanding I took 30-40% of the paint off, but I put it on very thin. I will post pics of the 2nd coat this afternoon.

I am going to wetsand after every coat. Too much debree in the air. I figure it may take a little longer, but if you keep cutting down the orange peel it will look better. Try sanding after every 2 coats if you are in a clean environment.

I am interested to see how it turns out. I do have to ask why in the world would you go to so much work as far as wet sanding each coat but not do the simple stuff like take off the door handles, bumpers, tail lights ?

HEY! HEY! HEY! Lookin' Good!!! That's what I love about the is process. You can lay a coat or two on and drive it and sand when you have the time!

I also opted to leave the 2 coats on for a week before I wetsand it so that the paint cures.

Why can't you wetsand metallic?

MonzaRacer
06-26-2007, 10:32 PM
Depends on the type of metallic, color sanding any single stage paint is a touchy practice at best. Got to have enough paint film or it will burn through.
This is why everyone who really tries to do a "show quality " paint job like base/clear systems. If you dont go through to the color your good and can always put on more clear.
I hope to soon have my Monza body ready for some implement paint, thinking Yellow or Orange, but whoo knows.
I dont know what to do color wise I have been messing with mixing colors, I was trying to hit on a purple color buut it lookedlike mud or something(pukey purple mud).

i have been sanding between coats, opposed to the suggested 2 coasts and then sand. I lightly sanded the third coat and if i have time i will put a forth on today.

it is all in the sanding. after coat 4, i will spend a good amoutn of time on each panel to get the orange peel out. It is coming along. I would say that for the 100 bucks i am in, i am happy. Looking foward to the end product.

s4dustin
07-03-2007, 12:39 PM
i would also say that it takes a while to dry. it has been over 100 in ca the last couple of days and it still takes 48-72 hours to fully dry.

I agree with the drying part! I've been waiting at least a couple days between application and sanding and it seems to work best this way. Also, don't get impatient and try and put on thick coats. The paint will be gummy when you try and sand it.

did you have any issues with the little bubbes?

I am going to sand this next coat reallllllly well to try and flatten the paint as well as i can. it is coming along. So much better than my primer already.

The real secret to this whole thing is not the application so much as the prep before and the color sanding! If you can get the paint real smooth in color sanding you'll have less orange peel when you apply the next coat. For me the bubbles seem to all pop on their own so I have no issues with it. How are you mixing your paint? I'm doing a 70% paint/30% Mineral Spirits mix.
One question I do have is after the last color sand with 2000 do I buff or do I add another coat and buff on top of that?

has anybody tried this method with a 2 tone. i am planning on doing my truck in this method, using a factory scheme in black with a white. any recommendations to get a nice clean break and not feel an edge. I am thinking that i will have to paint them together, ok what i mean is coat for coat. mask off the black and paint the white, then mask the white and roll the black. any help will be appreciated. I know Rustoleum makes a clear coat, but haven't tried it myself. I guess you could try it on a scrap piece of metel and see how it looks.

You can even it out in final sand so that you don't feel the edges!
