View Full Version : Anyone wanna help me try and build an engine?

For a while I wanted a roots supercharged 383. It was basically my dream engine. Then I heard a turbocharged 350 and I have to have one. :yum:

Then gas prices reached an all time high and I figured I'd stick with an n/a build. Accel Gen VII, AFR 195's, etc. Now I've decided that if I'm going to do it, I may as well do it the way I really wanted. :)

I basically just need help picking a cam and maybe rear gears if I need to swap them out.

I want to use an Accel Gen VII setup with AFR 195's. I found some forged rods and a crank, but not sure on a couple things. I was going to use 6" rods for the n/a build because I've always heard/read that the longer rods help to reduce sidewall pressure/force and help the pistons and rings live longer. True or no? Also, I was trying to get the compression ratio as low as I could (around 8:1), but then I read somewhere that you don't want to go too low because then the engine has no power when it's not building boost. Again, true or no?

I'm looking to get 550-600 hp with this thing. Not worried about how streetable it is. I'll probably run it n/a when I build it while I save for the turbo.

The rest of the drivetrain is a TKO-600 and an 8.5" with 3.42 gears.

Any more info, just ask. :)

Thanks,
Matt

If you don't mind doing a head swap when you put the turbo on you can have it both ways. I've got a Chevy 383, Eagle forged bottom end, splayed 3 center mains, SRP -16cc forged pistons, "mild" crane hydraulic roller cam. AFR angle milled 195's at 58 cc, with a Vic. Jr. and a 750 Demon carb. Good for about 10.3:1 CR and 465hp/465ft-lbs on an engine dyno simply for break-in. With some tuning it, EFI, etc. it's likely a 500 flywheel hp engine. Down the road, I can swap heads to knock the CR back and throw a turbo on it should I feel the need for more power.

You could do the initial build with a set of used heads and then go to the AFR's when you went to the turbo. Just a thought.

550-600 hp on a low comp motor is very difficult to be even close to road worthy. Take Mkelcy's advice and build a good N/A motor then swap parts when you decide to go Forced Induction.

Well I'm definitely not planning on making 550 hp n/a with the super low compression. That power estimate was with the turbo. I wouldn't mind too low of a compression since I could run the cheap fuel, though gas prices are beginning to drop so I suppose it's not that big of a deal.

I could just use my 041 heads, I suppose. Or maybe get some cheap vortec heads. I don't think it'd be too big of a deal to swap out heads when I got the turbo. I just don't want to have to get new internals, too.
