Chevelle turning, tire advise??

On the way to work this morning I ran into a Newer WRX with some exhaust and possibly some other hidden mods. He was trying to mess around so I thought I would play too.
He tried to pull me from a light and I stayed on his rear and then we entered a 270 degree right hand turn for a freeway onramp. I was in 3rd which was to low high a gear for the turn so half way through I had to downshift to 2nd.
Anyways, besides me being very nervous about the ass end sliding out, I could not pull on him in the turn and actually lost a car length,I had my radio blasting so I could not hear my car. I may have been able to push it harder as I assuming he was, but my last experience with this turn I had my rear almost slide out from cold rear tires in the morning. I was dissapointed I could not pull and actually lost about 1 car length to the WRX.

My car felt like the ass end wanted to come around, I was trying to fight that, I am hoping it was just a tire issue. I wish I had my radio down so I could have heard the tires.

Anyway, any thoughts on better "street rear tires?? I need a tire that is consistant on the street, the road race slicks are NOT! Need something sticky for traction and turning.

haha....ya but with your ride you should of just pulled up next to him at 65mph and smoked them past him.....he would of been doin the :jawdrop:

Actually the estimated curb weight of a 2006 STI is 3,351lbs.
He may have had at most a 300 lb advantage on the chevelle.

The WRX and STI's are nasty corner carvers...Some motorcycles have trouble keeping up with them in corners around Ortega HWY

So I should not be that ashamed?? I never drove a WRX and do not know alot about them except everyone says how fast they are(turbo) and they have a big wing from the factory.
I hated that feeling, I felt helpless when he was slowly pulling on me in the turn, he pulled a solid car length on me. It is a very long turn, 270+ degree flat non banked turn. I could not hear, but it kinda was feeling like the rear was "scrubbing", like on the verge of wanting to lose traction. On the exit of the turn I was at 4,000 rpm in 2nd gear, stepped on it and literally almost rear ended him even with him going as fast as he could. My car just leaped forward at that rpm witht the boost.

I need to work on my exits better, I am so afraid of the rear coming around, I cannot trust these rear tires, the grip drastically changes with weather, humidity, pavement type, and mostly temperature. Time for 315/35/17 tire research.

The tire will do alot, but some suspension will help as far a sway bars and spring rate. If your suspension is stock, and you running leaf stock leaf srings, well then it sounds like that might be a the problem. I have an 03 mustang GT and it rides on the stiff side but man through the turns it is planted and confident.

Horsepower is nothing if you can not use it, unless you use it for the smoke show.

What tires are you running now? You will need an R-Compound tire for starters if you don't have one now. Steve did a write up on Nitto's R-compound in PHR a few months back that might help. Check out the Mich Cup's, Toyo R's, or Khumo's if you are on a budget.

Edit: Even with a R tire you a probably not going to hang with the WRX in a turn...

You also have to realize that those cars are all wheel drive, too. So, in effect, he had a MUCH bigger advantage over you besides the weight advantage. Those things are frighteningly quick through the turns.

Hmmm.

I run a Goodyear Eagle GSCS road race slick. I will have to look on it for the compund. These tires are almost $300 each!!
