I am doing some custom work on some homemade rocker panels that will be welded to some channeling. problem is is that the 2 panels do not butt up to eachother perfectly flat. in some spots there is 1/16th to 1/8th inch of a gap. i am using a mig machine. can i basically fill the 1/8th inch gap and then run a nice bead on top of that? and will it be strong? thanks for the help chris

Yes and yes, just watch your heat and warpage...

that is what stitch welding is for. take your time, and you can get it done, although welding that big of a gap in thin sheetmetal is never fun.

I find that using finer wire helps because it pools quicker and doesn't force holes in the thin sheet. Just be PATIENT and you'll get 'er done!

You might want to see if you can find a filler alloy that leaves a soft weld. I'd have to look and see what kind of wire I'm running in my mig, but the welds are a PITA to finish unless you hit them with an electric grinder, and be careful not to take off too much material.

Pictures would help.
