It says on his website that the 85 is the best year for the corvette assembly. If your planning on upgrading to bear brakes does it matter if I get what I need off of a 84? Will there be any differance at that point? Does the abs pick up matter?

If I remember correctly, you dont want the 84 spindles. Everything else is ok. They were different from the 85-87 spindles, and not as good a product. Then the 86-87 spindles have the ABS hole in them. Nothing wrong with using them, just need to fab a block-off plate to cover the hole. Mine are from an 86 I believe. So the reason why he recommends the 85 is due to design and cosmetics over the 84 and due to the cosmetics over the 86-87. But you can still use the 86-87 stuff. Hope that helps. But double check that with Wayne to be sure.

I actually have been dealing with this lately, so maybe I can clear it up. The 85 is the best choice, because of the lack of an ABS mount. I have the 84 style knuckles. The only difference between 84 and 85 is the caliper bolt size. I believe that the 84 uses a 12mm bold, while the 85 and up use a 14mm. Wayne recomends the 85, due to the larger, stronger bolt size. But, there is no reason not to run the 84 knuckle. I have spoke to several vette specialists and Wayne, and have not heard of any problems with these bolts breaking. Bear does make an adapter bracket for the 84 knuckles (they didn't until recently), so the choice is yours. But, be careful when buying your parts. The "85" knuckles that everyone is after were only made for a short period. Early 85 knuckles had the smaller bolt size (mine were off an 85 car), and some later 85 cars had the ABS mounts. So if you don't want the ABS mount, your choices are limited. hope this helps

Great info. Thanks for your response. I've run across a couple of deals on the 84 stuff for about $300.00. Seems like an ok price to me. I think I may be able to get the 84 upper and lower a-arms and get the knuckles and hubs from a 85. But it sounds like there won't be too much to worry about if I have to go with the 84. Could'nt you just open the bolt hole and tap it for a 14mm?

cdog,
drilling out the holes really isn't an option. This is something that I spoke to wayne about. there isn't enough meat on the "ears" where the holes are located. I would be worried about weaking the knuckles, they are made of aluminum after all. I wouldn't be too worried about breaking your caliper bracket bolts.
