Seems like the Pontiac oilpans made aftermarket don't work with a 68 Firebird? I can only figure it's the rear steer thing.

Anyone know what to get for a Pontiac V8 in a Firebird?

OR

Any services out there that can modify my stock pan for better baffling/trap door?

Pick up last month issue of High Performance Pontiac. There was some new guys that did some modification to a pan with baffling/trap door.

The pans that i have seen differ in how they seal in the back and some have a small baffle to keep oil from sliding to the front but they don't differ in shape at all. I have not looked into aftermark pan to know why they wouldnt work on a FB.

I would call the Pontiac Dude or Buttle. I would guess they would have a pan for you.

I have the Milodon pan # MIL-30770 on my rear steer 64 Bonneville's 462. Its fits just fine. You'll want to use the cork rear gasket from Dave at SD Performance.

Man your making me think now. It had a Green 62 pro street Grand prix. The artical was about a 600+ hp motor this guy was building for a customer. He shows some pictures of the oil pan with the baffling and trap doors.

They have the Tech artical but don't show the pan like they did in the mag. It does have the name though of the builder.

Good luck

Unless you have the grooved rear main cap, that will accept the cork rear gasket, avoid ALL the aftermarket pans!!!

3-types of Pontiac rear pan gaskets: 5-slot; slot-hole-slot; and solid.
- The "solid" REQUIRES the grooved rear main cap.
- The 5-slot is excellent, it keeps the gasket in place and works VERY well.
- Slot-hole-slot SUCKS!!!!! The gasket will "S" on you, actually pushing out the back of the pan/block and leaking like crazy. If you have the slotted rear main, though, you can just use the cork gasket and be fine.

Here is the stupid part - ALL the aftermarket pans are the slot-hole-slot. If you find one that is 5-slot, PLEASE let me know!! Best I can tell, ALL of the "core" pans come from one manufacturer (probably in China) and Canton, Milodon, Moroso, et al buy them from the same source. From there, they do their modifications.

Unless you are going to be doing some serious road racing, still with the factory pan!

Oh, Donovan, are you in the H.A.L.F. group??? Great bunch of 1st-gen Firebird owners in Houston! http://www.halftx.net/

Thanks Lee!

We've never met but always pass by eachother in the "community"

Thanks for the voice of experience on this :) Now you really have me looking at some way to add baffling to a spare pan I have. <sigh>

I am involved with the HALF group. Although I've been more on the lurk than active. Car is now apart for some changes. 400/200-4r 12 bolt and some cleanup.

I run the Milodon too in my '68, no issues!
