Anyone have pics or exploded view to show how the emergency brakes work for the "LS1" calipers? I currently have the F body "LT1" rear calipers. The E brake is built into the caliper. How is it done on the LS1 calipers?

Thanks

This page probably has the best pictures you'll find on the internet: http://rides.webshots.com/album/132521633QTqPdo?start=24

Basically, there is a lever that spreads the single "C" shaped shoe.

I might be able to take pics of my own setup if you need.

Do the factory backplates have to be used, or can a plate be made to work in it's place? I ask because with a G body GN rear, the mount for the backing plate is kindof oddball. And I don't want to dut & drill the flange for the 4 bolt pattern of the F body.

The LS1 backing plate is a combination of a thick aluminum casting and a stamped sheetmetal dust cover. It probably totals .4" thick. You need to run a .2" spacer with 10 & 12 bolts and if you run the C5 rotor you need to run a .7" spacer. I'm a little familiar with the GN rear flange (I had an '86) and I bet you could double the spacer as an adapter, especially if you went with C5 rotors.

A .7" spacer is a nice little chunk. But could be used as an adapter as you stated. Hmmm.... I'll have to find a set & see what can be done. I currently have the "LT1" rear brakes, but I have heard the E brake doesn't work very well. I haven't got it hooked up yet so I can't say. But I have also heard that the LS1 rear brakes themselves work better than the LT1 ones do.

Please forgive the dumb question, but are we talking about 0.7" spacer at the axle tube flange or at the caliper mounting flange/backing plate?

Thanks!

Between the axle flange and caliper/e-brake backing plate.

I should note that the .7" number for the LS1/C5 hybrid setup is based on what I've learned from studying that setup. The .2" number for the pure LS1 setup is based on first hand experience.

Thanks Hammered, I have the hybrid setup, C5 brakes, LS1 backing plate /e-brake. Will see how well it all fits together....

Hammered,
Are you saying that to run the LS1 Rear Brakes on my 73 Camaro 10 bolt I have to add a .2" spacer between the mount and the axle flange?

what is this "hybrid" C5 setup?

amargari: Yes, that's my belief although you should double check of course.

RatMalibu: the hybrid setup is an LS1 backing plate, C5 rotor and C5 abutment. Either caliper will work. The C5 rotor has 0.5" less hat so you need to shove the parking brake shoe 0.5" further outboard to line up with the rotor. The C5 abutment takes care of the same for the caliper.
