Hey guys, I talk to a guy today thats got a hi-po code 327. I'm looking to switch out the 307 in the nova here soon. He says he had the engine in his first car and did a lot of hot rodding with it but never over heated it. Its got 11.1 pistons, and he says he had it over bored a couple of years ago .030 over. He said it will need a rebuild and maybe a new crank ( Depending on how I feel about polishing and truning cranks? He wants a $100 bucks for the engine. How much can you safely over bore these engines, and for a $100 bucks should I take the chance. I 'm just going to build a mild street engine that will see DD use eventually. I'll have all the standard machine work done as well.

$100 isnt too bad. Hell, if its bad... depending on the cylinder heads... it may be worth much, much more and you might be able to re-coop some of the $100 if it turns out that its junk.

But honestly... the max bore is going to be limited by core shift. You really need to have the block sonic tested to measure for cylinder wall thickness. The 327 blocks can be used down to about 200 for a performance build and a practicle limit of about 160 for a very mild build. Having it at 0.030" bore isnt going to tell you what and where the thin spots are so its kind of hard to say... "you can use a max safe bore of XX.xx". Is the bore tapered, out of round and is there a ring ridge ?? You wont know until you tear it down.

But out of experience with the specific block, Id myself would say 0.045 - 0.050". If there is little to no core shift... 0.060".

As for the crankshaft, the only one in San Diego to trust with the physical machining of a crankshaft is Don's Speed Center on Hancock... and there is good reason for this.

Other than that, the affordable engine guys are Pete Thompson (whomever bought it from Pete when he retired) in Chula, Ed Hale in Lakeside and Eyers (who bought ESI equipment/dyno/etc).

Hale does probably the best, fastest and most affordable hottank/mag/sonic in the San Diego area.

I'd drop a $100 on a complete 327 almost any day. Hi-po or not. Then again, I just like 327s for some reason. It just sounds good. 350 sounds boring to me.

Good luck with it. I hope it turns out to be a steal for you.

Core shift? Worry about boring older engines? Hmm i must have lived good cause the only piece of trash I every worry about boring past 030 are 305s and 400SBC.
I have bored thousands of 350s small and large journal 327s, heck we even build 307s too.My buddy had a 68 Impalla with a 040 307, forged pistons hi compression 305 heads w bigger valves, BIG cam, headers and 5.13 gears and it pulled something like 8.50s on cheaters in the 8th. A BOAT 68 Imp. the next week it came back and ran in the low 7's with a 606 worn out 355 dirt track engine.
honestly unless he over heated it or ran it out of oil, get a mic and measure the crank, if its smooth and in spec range, micro polish it and run it, If the rods dont check out pick up a set of aftermarket rods (unless they are small journal, then you will hunt) or rcon them with good rod bolts.
Some moly rings and pic a cam/lifters for your application.
Depending on the heads, if they are double humps you might wanna spring for some better heads. I have a place I can getVortecs all done ready for up to either 525 or 550 lift and they run about $350 to $375 each.
Or orderup some Sportsman IIs and have a good day. If it has the 1/8 th in dome piston and they are forged ,,schwinggggg, awesome piston for street.
If they are hypertecs they wont like detonation.
You know if I could find a set of 302 SBC pistons forged for decent price(over the 6 free 040 283 forged ones I got for free, just gotta buy 2 more new)I would bore my 61 model 283 out and build a 302!
and thats a .125 over bore.
Also if you want a 327 and the cheap engine is junk like bad crank or block use the pistons and the 307 crank you have and build a 327 from a large journal 350 block.
and unless you wanna do neutral drops or shift at 8500 with a 4 speed the 307 cast cranks are tough customers.
I have one fella who actually squeezes his to the tune a 150 shot on a progressive controler.
Anyway unless its total crap giver her a good ball hone , polish the crank give it some new bearings and rings and other freshen up parts nad drive it.
I figure it this way I bought a 350 out of an 89 4wd tht was a 7k mile warranty short block I repalced the rod bearings, and rings and built some heads and drove that engine for 267,000 miles between 2 different vehicles, swapped in an LT4 HOT roller at 50k and kept going, eve trashed first heads(bad ex guide)blew 2 head gaskets(from sitting too long without coolant)an it still ran when I took it out.
It still stock bore and with bore scope check I think it looks good enough that I may rering it and use it some time soon.
Heck the only reason it was pulled was abd oil leak and the timing chain was SOOOOO loose that after removing the timing chain coverthe chain would come OFF the lower gear without removing the cam gear.
The only thing that chain had keeping it on was the timing cover!
I lik 327s too real winders,,,. I wonder how hard I can spin my 283 hehe,,, can we say 8500 shifts hehe.
Now do I use the #185, 307 castings for the bolt holes or use my #462, 202/160 double humps and drill "ceater " bolt holes?
Old school engines are cool.
I even have a stock 67 Camaro Qjet I may use,, or gut to use as a throttle body.
Old school rocks

sweet! Yea, and its cheaper for me to go Gen1 style as well. I'm gonna pick it up and I'll be sure to post some pics for u guys to let me know what ya think. And as mentioned, I don't want a 350 cuz it does sound boring. PLus a high reving 327 is way sweeter! Now I need to find me a 700r4.

You did mean to say 200-4R right ??

Call DRW in Santee http://www.drwtransmission.com/ . Stay away from the 700. You'll thank me later.

He does all of Dutweiler's street GN trannies that put down 800-1000hp. The shafts in a 200 or bigger than a 700 and the gear ratios are much better for street cars.
