alright guys.....i know there are a million posts on here about 4l80E's but i didnt see this answered anywhere soo....how good is a stock 4l80E, how much hp and tq will it handle? i've seen some say the stock units will handle quite abit of power, others talk about having $3000 in one to hold on. i'm building a 500-550 horse BBC for a early 50's chevy pickup and wanted to go with the electronic overdrive. am i going to have a buttload of money in a tranny to hold up?

also, what year vehicles are the best to get one of these from, i've heard some talk of pre 95 or 96's not being as good? any direction helps! Thanks guys

Unless you are going to to take it to the track and beat on it, stock should fine for daily street use. The weak link I have been told is the reverse drum.

i have heard from people that they have paid between 250 & 750. of course, i never found anything close to 250. after very little looking, i paid 500 off of craigs list for used with proper 2wd tail.
