Well top and bottom already taken.
Just gotta have a good one to make it right.
i wish someone could take some digital pics of it and do some photoshop work on it for me. Oh well maybe a friend of mine that goes to VU for commercial drawing can do some decent rendering for me.
Keep them coming I am working on my list to post soon and progress pics.

Ok so I was out surveying the rusty floor, found a lot of my project metal and some parts from other Monza.
I also found my factory 64 Pontiac Grand Prix SD421 console I was given years ago, well I loaned the shifter out and never got it back so I have everything but a key lock so I am thinking of using it.
Now this was one that they have a front panel that goes up to the dash and I figured the flat face would be cool for my guages and there used to be I believe either an ash tray or light that was in the top part so I fiugred I would dump the palstic under piece and repalce the Monza console with the GP piece.
My shifter will still be my Hurst Pistol Grip Quarterstick, it will just come through the console and the lid will coverthe Park brake,,I think.
I have also looked at the power trunk lock from my old 71Monte parts car and I believe it will work so I may have power hatch latch!
Then comes power locks and windows too.
More fun!
I am thinking a lot of power accesories and getting a tag that reads MOREPWR,, but still need a name for the car besdies that piece of sh@t.

Ok so I unbolted my drivers seat and removed it to work on the rust holw.
so got it out, couldnt find my 4 in grinder so I used my polisher/sander wth heavy disc and my sawsall (gotta love Dewalt)to work.
So I got out the big part of the hole and starded cleaning up and getting an idea where to start, pulled out my 16 ga project metal nad I forgot that all I have are my old Blue Point shears at home, oh well got itcuts and started trying to fit it.
Well I have a 5 1/2 in MAC vise but no garage to go around it so it was sitting on the ground and usedthat to bend the metal some.
Yes I am building a car without a garage.
So I got the sheet metal very close, got 2 sides very close so I brought out the MIG. Still loaded with 035 flux core (I know not the best idea but its whats here for now and it is working)wire.
So i started the tack and smack to fit plain metal into place.
I have used this method for years and it works good for a guy with limited tools/garage.
Well it starts taking shape, the metal is getting to shape and fitting better (16GA IS A BITCH TO WORK INTO SHAPE!).
Dont get me wrong I know flux core isnt the greatest (035 size wire either,, I would prefer 023 and co2/argon)but its what I have and will put up with the cleanup ,and besides if it cleans up its going to be sealed in under thermal barrier and sound deadner too so its fine for thesmall place I repaired.
Anyway dummy me got that in and was trying to put another section in and cut the wrong sheet ,it was some galvanized I had,,,,ooppss.
now old welders trick is if you weld on galvanized drink milk it helps. I even had a doctor that catered to construction workers tell me the same tip.
Well I need to find my 4 in grinder so I can do some more grinding on the rust.
I also have 2 more rust spots on the floor ,one under the gas pedal and one on the left where the left foot would sit also up next to the kick panel. These are closer to the point where the frontend is attached to the body so I will be a lot more technical in my repair there.
I have long held that most engineers use similar measurements and such and that they will "cut and paste" geometry and techniques alot and the more I work on cars the more I honestly believe this.
Luckily the stock rockers on Hbodies are the starting foundation on these cars and I have been trying to cross breed parts to them.
I found that the rear suspension points are the same measure as S10s , this is why I used an S10 rearend.
I have been toying with laying the Monza bodies over s10 frames, and mount to the s10 frame. I am already using the spindles for the 5 lug and bigger brakes.
I have even measured the front tie rod track width and it is VERY close.
Bunt untill I cant use the stock construction I will wait on that.
BUT I have toyed with the idea of installing some subframe connectors and making a mount to use the S10 springs and even make it a leaf sprung car. But with the inherint limitations of leafs i really think I can still redesign the rear suspension to a better bolt on 4 link kit.
I am also looking at adapting the Air Ride Technologies springs to my car.
I want this "kit" to be mostly bolt on. So as to make it a ready update for Hbodies, with minimum destruction to the base car.
for the most part i want to triangulate to get rid of the factory panhardbar/mount and clear the over the axle exhaust I want to run.
So if I make my connectors to also be the lower pickup points I will use that to attach my lower control arms. The control arms that would use stock control arm mounts would be very short, in the area of 12.5 to 13 inches.
And its tight packaging under the back of the car make designing a "new" set of upper pickup mounts into a car that doesnt have any nor was designed for them.
I am ,,,torn on the geometry for the upper control arms but after making some mock up mounts and getting some weld tabs from ART ill work on the pickup points. I had figured on usig the standard 12 bolt Chevelle housing angle or possibly if I can locate a Gbody diff those points. The big trick is to stop any bind as I build it and allowing for exhaust running without getting the springs hot if I can go over the axle. As I had a notion to center the gas tank under the car and make it with dual fill spouts.
Of course I intend to use ART CoolCaps too.
Oh and if you see my Monza its possibly gonna have 2 NOS bottles, now are BOTH my air tank or just one hahaha.
I have sort of figured out my universal EVAP system and since I am building a PWM fuel regulator I dont think I will need any return lines.
Lots of planning and little time or money to do it with.
But still need a name for her.
MonzaRacer
06-04-2007, 08:13 PM
Well how about this for a name, A friend of mine Wendy (a very cute 5 ft 2 in blonde built like a brick s___house) she aske me waht i was going to do to it and I started listing my plans (also stating I was doing it on the cheap).
And I ask her to help think of a project name.
So we are talking about things and she tells me she wants PT car now too. ( I think I wanna marry her, she likes cars!!!!!)
So we have dinner and she says "I have it! The name for your car!"
OK drum roll please:
"THE CHEAP TRICK MONZA"
So what do we think of it?
Project: Cheap Trick 77 Monza 2+2 /Touring Edition
I had told her about my thoughts about making an SS clone type idea (hence she came to the conclusion Touring Edition sounded better)
I was thinking if I use the Touring Edition of doing the "Tourning Edition in carbon fiber.
Any thoughts?
The possibility of NOT using the 283 right out of the box has been tossedaround as I have a standard bore 350 so I found a guy with a set of GM forged 11.5 to 1 LT pistons, the ones with the 1/8in dome from 70 LTs, and I may be ableto trade or buy for $150.
And the engine is a hydralic roller capable block,,,sooo LT4 hot roller cam,,, and I may be able to scrounge a set of AFR 180s or AFR 195s , not sure which.
Ok what about the name?

I got the big hole in the floor fixed, well welded on top ,still need to do it underneath though.
I still have the holes under the gas pedal and on the left where your left foot would rest to fix.
I am also working on modifying the seats to use the swapmeet seats I bought for $10 ,,,but they are too wide for a Monza so I am taking the cushion mounts and the recliner mechanism and welding them to the cut down Monza frame/tracks.
Still working outside so its slow going and still out in the sun,,,very hot!
Well here are some more pics.

Well got some more of the modifying of the Monza/swap meet seat cross breeding.
I want reclining seats and the swapmeet ones wont fit as they are too wide.
So I am making some of the parts fit. The reason I wanted the ones from the swapmeet as they have a hole right below the headrest and I figured the racing harness I have would work well running through there.
I also pulled out my implement primer and put some on a rusted fender on another car, used a brush even. As some of the members are bagging on implement enamel paint jobs so I intend to use it on my Monza.
Well more later.

WEll got to day dreamig about working over the wheels wells, and moding lots of stuff.
So I gotta stop and get it running or i will never get it movable and loose interest.
Still gotta find a couple of forged 040 flapt tops for a 283 as I really like the idea of a short stroke sbc for now AND I have headers.
I am still working out the design for the 4 link to replace the torque arm and that will gain a lot of room for exhaust.
Heck I am still thinking of a remote turbo kit from STS.
Still gotta figure which implement color I am going to use.
I am still working on an idea using the 64 GP console and my Pistol Grip Quarterstick. The front plate is just too inviting to mount either guages or my radio.I am even thinking of usingthe older 90s C/K radio and a CDchanger as the head is remote fromt the tuner.
Cheap Trick is going to be super cheap and I hope to make it turn and burn too.

I just cant find anyone good enough to draw anything up that I can afford or to do any photoshop work to tell me what wheels might look good.
Oh well I got the S10 rearend out of my other 77 so I now have something to install and I will get some of my old 255 60s mounted as the 275s need a lot of wheel well massaging.
I hope to trade for a 4wd diff and get lucky enough it has same 3.42 hears as I already have those speedo gears in my TH350.
The reason I am looking at a $wd diff is that it might be wider and give me a better chance at locating a decent wheel.
BUT after looking at the Swiss Cheeze Camaro I kind of like a lot of dish!
and PMed Markus over at SC&C and queried about the ATS spindles for the front down the road as I already have adapters to install Gbody/S10/ZQ Blazer spindles. And I hope to have the best stopping Hbody out there.
And I hope to get the rough proto type 4 link ready to install this weekend or next.
Its very tight and I am trying to get it done so as to sell it to other Hbody owners and not have to hack good cars up too much..
It just sucks as I have no way to hack off the good rear metal parts from my old 77 to save for others who need good parts.
I am hopingto trash some crap plastic parts too as I rip out the interior to finish repairs and some simple mods and I hope to get some ideas on the mods to the 64 GP console.
Well time to go eat.

MonzaRacer
07-01-2007, 08:37 PM
haha mikey,
We ll folks i have a way to MAYBE get am engine together at least to be running.
forthe most part I like my initial thoughts if using the '61 283 I have, add on some later 307 heads with bigger valves and cam it reasonable and try to figure out a turbo set up later, but I only have 6 forged pistons so far.Reaso nfor use was I have all the bearings already and I like them they can wind up real tight and still live.
Now I do still have the 89 L98 from my truck, its na ex roller motor (I had a LT4 HOT cam in it ) and its got 250 k on it but is still std and last I saw it had no rifdge.
Now I have a chance to pick up a set of STD 350 LT1 11.5 to ones (.125 domes) and with later heads would make around 9 to one or so and can get them for $150 or maybe trade my GM (re MSD 6T) Hearvy Duty Ignition for it or sell it to a circle burner/drag racer cheap.
Then all I would need is a set of rings and bearings and I even still have a good use 350 cam and a cheap timing set and clean up an old stock pump and add a new screen and high preasure spring I could get it together pretty cheap too.
The 283 on a torbo setup is kind of cool and different and I figured till it got a turbo it would get good mileage too.
I am just having problems getting motivated without buy ing parts and I figure if it runs I might try to get it going sooner.
MonzaRacer
07-14-2007, 11:56 AM
Well still in the engine building phase but since its coming up on my ESOP cash to come in I figure Ill get the 283 together and wasthinking of getting Vortec for a 305 as that will give me a reasonable compression. I do have the double humps but no bolt holes are hard and the fact Iwould have to mill the crap out of them. A local car show is coming in Sept and I figure on the car being in primer for that unless I can swing the cheap paint job (if since my mom moved and doesnt sell old home she has a garage I could paint in I would just have to wire in the 220 for my compressor and beg it off my brother or buy a new one.
so much to do and so little time/money. I still need to buy new tires too as I dont think I will be able to get 17s this year so I ll need some slightly smaller rear tires(had 275/60s ,,,may go 255. And it depends on when I get my 4x4 rearend.
also hoping ofr enough to get my front shock waves and maybe put a few bucks back so I can upgrade my rear air bags on truck and reuse the 9000s on it on my Monza.
I have good shock for the back for now so I wont mess with that till they show me they wont work.
I figured out the factory electric lock I have on an old Monte Carlo trunck may just fit the Monza so electric hatch!
Also looking for the parts to make power windows/locks.
Lots to do.

Paybills and get caught up and buy a few parts for the Monza and such.
Now as I think i have enough stuff done around to pacifiy the IDEM.
someone reported me for peeing in a milk jug and throwing it out my back door.
What a crock,,,now I am 2 weeks behind but $2250.00 better off.
So now to get some measurements and order some Air Ride hehehehe wEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE EEEEEEE!

Well after having worked on a friends Malibu with some home grown big brakes so I am gonna work on some ideas similar to Lowbucks ideas and working on welding my floor repairs,,,driver side floor has some minor rust.
WEll 283 is going to be shelved for a while till I can find some good rods for it and maybe match up some pistons a little better.
I have a roller block 350 with lots of miles and I think I may pull it down and replace the pistons/rings and bearings and then I gotta find some heads and slide it in for a short time but to get it moving.
I have a 4x4 rear end coming as its widerand will allow me to pick a better wheel offset and maybe find something off the shelf even.
My machinist has a set of slightly used cast flat tops and all on rods so I can just swap him rods.
If my crank is good it will polish and some new bearings and simple hydralic cam and my old Edelbrock Scorpion intake.
Gonna work on Megasquirt too fuel only for now as I am still working on my DIS conversion.
But it will get her running soon I hope.

Just hope and pray boss is just being stupid and opens his eyes(I know dream on) on what he is doing wrong.
Now I am just trying to figure out an engine till I can get my 283 done or deside on a 302, just cause my boss says it smacks too close to Ford(he doesnt like Fords) also he has this stupid kick on stock only yet will put add on beds, stuff, snow plows etc on.
Even for a religious man he seems to be developing a hypocritical streak.
Oh well.

OK so I am working on the parts list to add on the big disc brakes, and MArkus over at SC&C is gonna whip up some sweet upper control arms as soon as I send him my spare one.
www.V8monza.com (http://www.V8monza.com) owner/operator Bob Gumm makes the adapters for the S10 swap to put 5 lugs on.
I am also working on a bolt on rack conversion that will incorporate the rack mounting AND swaybar mounting in one. This will correct the minor steering issues caused by longer steering arms.
I may swap in a set of ATS spindles for a Gbody as the bolt aon arms would also cure things slightly cheaper in the long run I THINK.
I am also trying to get a true bolt in 4 link setup for the rearend so it dumps the torque arm, and then I am working on Air Ride conversion too. The front will be ART Shockwaves and rear will probably be CoolRide.
I am gonna use an old NOS bottle for air tank.
Keep in touch as I am working as much as I can on my own.

Well I am having to piece the floor together from pieces of sheet steel. Because I have very little in the way of tools here at home I am mixing thicknesses of sheet metal but still trying to get it back in.
A fella came through and asked why I didnt just buy new ones,,,I WOULD BUTTHEY DONT AMKE REPLACEMENT FLOOR PANS FOR HBODIES!
So I am left with trying to get a floor in it and get it rolling before snow flies(sucks with no garage) hope it gets running soon, just gotta bid my time on the engine.
Picts to follow after I get some more work done.

I bought a Mirage kit for it and never used it. Sitting up in my attic if your interested.

Well still looking into wheels as I want 17s but if I get new 15 tires the new wheels and tire in 17 are on hold for little while.
That and I think I really need to find an S10 4x4 rear end, gotta look up which years could have 8.5 then have right width for newer wheels and stronger also.
Also talked to Tims Turbos , now thinking of twin T04B V trims in built in waste gates, but 900 each is little salty , need new engine first so it may run n/a for little while.
And need to figure out how to afford heavier air springs for truck then can pull 9000s out of truck and use in Monza.

Well taxes came back, I waited till 11pm for taxes to come back then first purchase was 2 replacement pistons to match the other 6 I got for free.
I am still debating on what to do, but it looks like I may run the double hump 461s with the 202/160s if they clear the block of my 283 after 040 bore. Or do I look for a set of 601 casting 305 heads
Still need rings and gaskets. maybe some cam bearings.
Then I need to pull the old engine, strip off the parts we need to get the 283 running.
I have my LT Intake to use and still not sure whats up with the headers.
It has the ones that clear motor mounts, but I have the ones for motor plate.
I got a type 2 PS pump from a 2.0 Cav engine so I still need to figure out the rest.
Gotta think about what to do for electronics, so I try to mod a stock computer for now, or step up and look at getting my Megasquirt II now?
Now need to think about saving for turbos too!

03-01-2010, 06:21 PM
OK pistons SUPPOSED to be here after 03/03/10, did a favor for my machinist and gonna start on block and hopefully get heads finished up so I can do some minor port work.
Next up look for some more cash and hopefully get my Megasquirt kit home so I can start assembly, also need to find a remote thermostat housing and drill out the LT 1 intake, also need to get my DIS setup more together for this project and need to figure out the cam sensor Ill need.
so many little details yet so little to do to get it going.

Well ordered pistons back beginning of Feb when taxes came back, been pushed out AGAIN all the way to 28th of march.
Some BS about taking more time as one foundry burnt or shut down or Global Warming took it over or some BS.
I am so frustrated, being a 040 over 283 all I need are 2 flat top forged pistons as i already have 6 free ones, and short block for free.
And replacement welder isnt here yet, but I do know its coming.
Well atleast gives me time to dig up some supplies, electrodes for tigging, right thickness rods, get an outside 220 outlet wired up for tig welder and maybe a bigger 110 for my mig so it doesnt blow breakers as easy and I can crank it up!

Woohoo,,,,,,I think? Not sure if want to do this but found a complete set of ZQ8 spindles in junkyard with calipers and rotors and also same blazer has rear disc, if I wasnt wanting t ouse a 4wd rear diff I might pony up extra $200 for the rear disc diff, if it turned out to be a 8.5 it would be much better.
But can get spindles/brakes for $35 a side I pull it. Then have to do my front brakes all over again as i already have 5 lug conversion but this would make Vette brake conversion down road easier,,, and may be able to sell old spindles.

So pistons got pushed out till 8/22, then back to 8/2 now ship date says 8/6.
I just wish the cash was available to buy a full set of pistons but hey those may be back ordered till 2012.
If a different engine was in the current pic Id start over but this one is kind of set.
Also need to figure out a rad for this one too.
Big thing about Hbody cooling is its a fun thing to keep some of them cool so I need to think about investing in Evan NPG+ coolant also but at $40 a gallon its kind of a chunk.
And still need to science out my FI setup as I am using an LT1 intake.
and still need to decide on cam that can also run with turbos down the line sooo, I guess a call to some cam companies are in order.
My big thing is hoping to have one of the cars running for local Car Cruise mid September.
Well here is to hoping.
MonzaRacer
07-29-2010, 03:45 PM
Well still looking into my mighty small block, since I have an older 283, I may be getting a set of std 302 pistons,,hmmm 5.0 emblems?
I still want to use shorter stroke , old school engine to keep my bottom end issues at bay, a 355 just has too much low end torque for what I to do.
Now looking into which turbos to base this setup on and look around for a cam grinder if needed( a company, not a machine).
The cars intended purpose is cheap, on a LIMITED budget, and go fast around an autocross and still run hard if I can get to a road course.
I have talked to my turbo guy about turbos, he suggested T0-4B T-trim with integral waste gate, but was wondering about different ideas size wise.
I have been lookign at the cheap Ebay turbos as several of the local GN guys say for a budget they work well and hold up, and down the road add in better (maybe even bigger turbos if needed). ones later.
And remember this is a tight engine compartment being a Monza and I hope to keep a place for AC soon too.
i do have a small ps pump, thinking of remoting the tank, and going serp belt if I can get right pulleys.

Well on ward and ,,,well no where yet. But having a better plan.
The engine will most likely be my 61 283 bored 0.125 6 in rods, a buddy says he has a set of dyers small journal sbc rods, all I ahve to do is get past last trailer payment, paying for my grandmothers furniture and then finding a reasonably priced set of std 350 forged pistons.
Then turn a few thousandths off the top and tada perfect pistons.
Gotta get my th350 out and clean it up and hope sitting hasnt hurt it, and dig up my old 255 60 tires for fitting till I go 17s.
got several parts to sell but cant so I guess ill hang on to them longer.
But my intention is to modify the LT1 intake I got off of Mr Quick and use Megasquirt to run it. Hoping my DIS project has good results,,,as soon as I get my northstar crank.
Turbos and such are my newest learning curve,,and I am helping a co worker to build his B16a with B18c head and it will be turboed with Megasquirt too.
so I really need to get the rearend back in and it rolling enough to work on. And I am gonna try to get my engine in my other project "What If" as I am off this week. MAYBE.

Well still working out piston/rod arrangement, found pistons on ebay but funds not forth coming. Really need to sell my GMPP ignition (GM branded MSD 6T, boc dist and coil to finance).
Still trying to to get some traction financially after paying off trailer,,,,job is getting odd with loss of service manager and getting old store manager as our district fool,,,,.
Oh well taking it as I get it, one day at a time. got some small part ordered to get rearend under the car.

Well, job definitely went south, now looking for another job, but in better shape this time around for leaving job. Just have to figure out how to move my tool boxes.
But now I am more solid in my plan for the car:
Engine:
Block undetermined yet either a 030 89 roller block with spacer bearings and two pies rear main adapter or a '61 model 283 0.125 over
Rods will be a set of 6" 2.00 journal rods, aftermarket but not sure of brand yet, either ebay h beams or set buddy says he has.
Crank factory steel/nitrided std/std crank.
Main studs, Moroso windage tray, oil pump mounted rear oil baffle,,, be nice to find a Corvette baffled/trapdoor pan but my luck/funds arent going just right yet.
Cam will be something conducive to FI/Turbos and driving auto cross
Heads are gonna be old school cause its what I got and they will work better with small engine 461 Double Humps, 2.02/1.60, screw in studs, guide plates, cut for big springs and positive seals.
May run roller rockers if can find inexpensive set. Found a good stud girdle but not sure Ill need it but I can get it right.
My induction to start will be my old Edelbrock Scorpion intake but after getting the FI computer parts sourced (Megasquirt) and assembled then Ill have enough stuff figured out to make the LT1 intake work properly,,unless my other idea works.
Too bad MSD dropped the LS ignition set up that fit older gen engines and used COPS, as they had a great cam sensor/oil plug/drive.
So I have a small car and I am still working out air ride install issues in front so I figured to start either non adj or single adj coil overs from Ridetech. Cool ride in back as it will fit better for my ideas. I even have an old NOS bottle to use for tank!
Looking at redoing the crappy torque arm that takes up room where exhaust can go and finishing the cross member to install 4 link/3 link set up, yes its designed to do both. On 3 link it will be useable with factory panhard for people not looking to remove stock rearends OR with a Watts link designed around Fays2 set ups
My trans will be my tried and true TCI th350 unless its damaged or I can source 700r4 or 4l60e and controller.
Rearend is looking to be either a 2wd or 4wd S10 set up. 2wd till I get better rims and upgrade brakes. Then use 4wd, may add disc to back or it may come with not sure yet.
Brakes in front are for now 86 S10 with adapters from Bob Gumm/V8monza.com, looking to use Kore3 parts and C5 Corvette brakes when I go to 17in wheels.
Looking at 215/40/17 front, thinking 235/50/17 to 255/50/17 or even 225/55/17,,, depends on tires available in these sizes. Front tires are limite to less than 24 in tall,,,unless I rebuild whole front of car!
I am building front seats that will recline from a set I got cheap at swap meet and old worn out Monza seats(those things are NARROW!).
Not sure on rest of interior, still looking for new plastics as all my disintegrated.
Well will see when tool I have on Ebay sells,, I hope and new job comes along.

old yellow car before and after the wreck and my newest blue one, even have a few where Idid the front 5 lug conversion on trailer to make easier to get off trailer.
Not sure where the seats came from but Igot them for $10 for pair, pulled bottoms apart to modify them and the Monza buckets to fit my car, besides orginally the seats are too wide so i cross bred the seats. Reason I wanted seats is that I could recline them and my racing harness the would fit through the holes in the backs.
You can see where I started working on repairing some small holes in drivers floor where water from shoes made floor rust out,, but not too bad. Still need to work on that some more and get doors swapped as the latches and locks na such dont work well in the blue doors. The yellow was a spray bomb to see if I liked the implement enamel yellow.
The title is Cheap Trick so a $25 gallon of paint fits right in.
Been looking at cheaper ebay twin turbo kits, just not sure if the headers will clear the front end.
My big issue is I have some parts an tools for sale, more to survive rather than to build but it would be nice to sell enough stuff to get a small start AND keep a float till I get a new job or unemployment or start my own shop.
The yellow car got really messed up the right frame rail hit a tree at about 35 to 40 mph a you can see the roof was even wrinkled BUT door would still open and close after I removed the left overs of the front fender.
Driveline survived, wheels, brakes, doors, heck bad thing was my only good Monza radiator got trashed, the one from blue car could have been recored but got stolen. The windshield wasnt even broke,,,,only glass that got broke was rear hatch, when my tool box hit it.
I saved rear bumper cover, doors, dint get to save clutch pedal though as car had been 6 cyl 5 speed when I got it then gave it away and then got it gave back to me.
Bad thing was the yellow car was literally a rust free car, cheap yellow paint job by my uncle so his daughters could drive it to school.
I did find an aluminum radiator that might work, cant get a new Monza rad anymore or even a Buick rad..
Odd thing is Iam going to be making a lot of my own stuff for this car it looks like.

I took the mounts the uppers bolted to and welded them to the Monza lowers, then cut the lower cross of the seat backs so I could pull it in and narrow the backs to fit. When I figure out how to afford the upholstery done Ill have then narrow the covers and I will still use the lower Monza foam or have new stuff remade, and use the black seats cover to make a new cover.
it actually wasnt too hard, only thing is I hate using flux core wire in my welder as its large diameter and I like using 023 over 030 or 035. also the flux core is harder to get to stick to rusty metal. Light surface rust can be burnt off if you use enough heat.
Also since I have no garage to work in it takes time to get everything out, do some work then pack it all back into car.
I have been looking for a different hatch as mine is sort of rusty on inside, I could fix it , may have to or may replace with 'glass.
Quarters need some minor help as do the inner wheel well help but its all easy repair.
My big thing is getting a chance to work on it, the money and a place to work on it. I really need to move the spring perches. I want to use the SRD made perches that use no U bolts. So they dont interfere with the springs when I go with rear air ride.
This car will have CoolRide in back, Ill use a NOS bottle I have for air tank and small compressor. It will look cool. I will probably start with CoilRide in front at first, then later on finish developing ShockWave mounts if I can the front end is real tight.
I am looking into switching out the older 86 S10 spindles to the later ZQ8 spindles as the adapters will swap over. This will then let me to up grade to larger Corvette brakes. Being its only 3000lbs I figure up graded 325mm fronts should do fine. I will probably keep using S10 rear ends to make it cheap and they work well.
MonzaRacer

Well the search for less expensive parts goes on,,, found these on Ebay(http://www.ebay.com/itm/CHEVY-SBC-5-700-6-000-SMALL-JOURNAL-4340-H-BEAM-CONNECTING-ROD-W-ARP-8740-BOLTS-/180845930604?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2a1b41e86c&vxp=mtr) and so far three friends have built with them in 5.7 length and no issues under NOS abuse. Yeah some guys are digging out old small journal parts and engines,, and I think a lot of dads and grandfathers are passing on so kids(!?!) are dumping all the old "junk" to clean up.
Just saw a video from buddy, Ill try to get a link to it on youtube, he is running a GT35 knock off turbo in single form on a small journal 327, scat i beams, double humps and a custom ,swap meet 4bbl throttle body using old 2 bbl TBI Ford injectors. Turns out his 310 hp N/A engine ran 543 with little effort and great back pressure readings on boost.
He simply used a Microsquirt from his wrecked snow mobile and it works fine.
Odd ball thing is he is gonna slap it into a Chevette Scooter he bought with stuck engine, car had sat since mid 80s when some Granny went into nursing home. People tried to get it running for their junior, but thought it had rusted up so pushed it out and had called scrapper to come get it. IT STILL SMELLS LIKE A NEW 80's GM car! all the papers window sticker etc are in it.
Gary is gonna get a guy to make a photo shop copy and add the "optional" turbo small block option to it when he shows it. He is going to run a maverick 8", on swing arms similar to Car Crafts Chevette build and what I built on my yellow car. Big thing is he found a 4l60e set up for manual shift/paddle shift so figure he will use that. Wonder just how good mileage will be on long cruises?
Still looking for economical pistons also have most pieces to build bottom end after getting rods and pistons/rings.
Heads are 90% done, need to finish one guide and opening up for 202 valves and then assemble. Will probably use a Comp 268 cam similar to Martys Grenade over on theturboforums.com.
If they are still a available found what look like suitable turbos for $159 each plus shipping so then only need turbo headers,, also around $120 a set.
Just trying to get energy up to do anything after stagnating at pep Tuckey so long AND working my butt off as only tech in shop, I mean Service manager is doing stuff too but come on, and he has the other lube techs get things up, and inspects them and lets me do the brakes job or what ever.
Latest job was removing rusted out manifolds from 5.4 F150 truck,, and extracting 2 exhaust studs broken off below flush in aluminum heads.
Only three studs came out with nuts and one nut came off but its self others had to be burnt off with torch, nuts welded to and removed.
Fun thing is every bay has cutting torch as it is a Midas shop. Gotta love it.
Oh and last weeks pay check was less that $100 less than a 2 week check from Pep Tucky so bills are getting caught back up and not starving anymore,,,!
Just wonder how great pay check would have been at Pep Tucky if they had actually let me push and work more?
Well life takes its toll, cars is getting cranky (91 Cavalier, 245k miles) minor wreck few weeks back but still runs but needs lots of work, maintenance, but car just isnt worth it I feel even though it runs great. Thinking of selling to buddy who runs Hornets so he has spare parts. Take that and see if mom will sell me her 94 Olds 98. At least I know that car. And if buddy gives me going rate by weight $300 would be nice down payment on it. and mom got grandmas car so Icould do some regular maintenance for her at no parts charge (she always pays me for parts) for more payment as Grandmas Chrysler is due for timing belt/water pump change and some other simple stuff.
Well off to shop for wheels, been looking at C5 Corvette wheels and bolt on spacer adapters for now.
Onr thing I really need is to find a place that would respond to narrowing a C5 wheel by at least an inch on inside to make it fit car better.

Wow you started this in 07. Any progress? Any pics?
Well due to long hours at new job with only me as tech and service manager last couple of months have been a blur so to speak.
If the weather ever starts settling down I will get back to work on it. I have started pulling parts off the engine to get it ready to pull. I am STILL looking for proper pistons at right price. When I started my idea of the 0.125 over 283 I had options on used pistons and no cash,,,now working and actually making enough to be able to buy something and all I can find are used pistons that people think are worth within $25 of NEW,,,come on people.
So hoping time and funds allow me to restart an already started project,,,guess now I can send my upper a arm to Marcus at SC&C to get them built!
And I have my Caprice to work on too,,,,,,,oh boy!
MonzaRacer
10-23-2012, 02:33 AM
Well found 6 more 283 040 pistons,,,,AND I GOT'em FOR $50!
So now I have 12 pistons, will match then up on compression height and weight and scrounge up some decent 5.7 rods and regualr rebuild parts and start my short block! And finish the heads.
Also figured out which wheel I will use. Hard to find 17x7 wheels but Summit has Fast Fives, fount decent, strong, wheel adapters and might look for a 4wd S10 rear axle as its wider (smaller adapter, if at all.
Bad thing about these wheels 5.57 BS on fronts wheels and 6 in on rears, hence adapters or new axle.
Cheap trick moving slowly forward, and "What if" is gonna go together here partially too!
Nice to have some movement on the cars.

Hey I am glad to see you are posting about your build. I am curious about your decision to run the wider S10 4x4 axle. Are you
trying to run similar offset to late model corvette wheels?
I am building a pontiac astre was thinking about something similar to widen the track width front and rear to 59" then use late
model corvette/camaro/trans am wheels brakes etc.
In the rear use a 4x4 8.5 inch axle from S10 and probably a custom front subframe with same track width.
MonzaRacer
10-25-2012, 06:02 AM
Actually YES to part of it. I am looking at using a 6 in offset wheel as they are cheaper AND fit. with a 4wd rearend, just stay awayd from ZR2 rearends, those are even wider.
I fit 275 60 15 on 15x 8.5 with 3.5 in back space and only had to clearance for the tires, 255 60 had fit my 75 Monza with same swing arm suspension.
I have been working on a bolt in upper crossmember to add in a 3 link or 4 link and Fays 2 Watts link set up and will use rear air ride air springs and probalby Ridetech coil overs in front.
My hope is to upgrade to ZQ8 spindles do Ican add in Corvette brakes later on.
I can get Fast five wheels in 17x7 5.57 bs for front, will need 2 in spacer and run 205 40 17, Ithink, rears are looking like using a 17x8, 6 in bs and for starters a 225 50 17 as I can get pair of used yokahamas for $40 from work.
Then later on get some Bridgestones or Firestones or Nittos.
another reason is Ican get pair of adapters for cheap, like $75 a pair in front, and $85 a pair in back and still be able to swap in wider rearend later on.
BUT a stock 2wd s10 rearend fits hbody well and spring pads are ame width apart. I set mine up as a swing arm suspension, bad thing is that with a stiff lower arm acting like a ladder bar and its only 12.5 in long from rearend centering hole to center of spring eye,,, it makes for a violent set up so I am working on the 3link/4 link cross member and it should bolt in accross the car to stiffent and give point to tie in with down bars from a cage, and tie into the rear seat belt bolts and have hangers to hang duals from.
According to one person a 94 Buick Park Ave sending unit fits Monza tanks which gives me electric fuel pump.
I have 4 companies that can produce wheel spacers and they range from 1 in thick to 3 in thick.
your idea on front track may cause you issues as I have 15x7 wheels 3.5 bs and 225 50 15 rubbed. I found that if you go over 24 in tall tire it rubs period unless you modify the firewall.
I dont like idea of a subframe up front. Mounting points would really tax the chassis/unibody besides I am gonna get Marcus at SC&C to whip up some SPC upper control arms to make it easier to adjust. Lowers I am looking around at few tubular control arms, might even buy parts and make my own.
My issue now is just getting it rolling. Then mods will come. Been on jack stands for too long.

Hey thanks for responding, I spoke with Marcus regarding getting some control arms and the upshot of that conversation was control
arms connected to the wrong pivot points do little to improve handling. Thus the need for a complete front clip.
I am trying to sort it all out before I start buying parts that won't work together. Right now I am kind of thinking it could be a good
idea to stretch the hub width as close as possible to 59" and use late model corvette spindles control arms hubs etc similar to JKR
front subframe.
I have no problem tubbing the firewall or narrowing the frame rails to make it all fit, its all rusted out and needs to be replaced anyway.
I am not positive which way to go yet, but sounds like i need to determine which track width to go with prior to buying an axle!
MonzaRacer
10-27-2012, 02:57 PM
First of all the Monza has a pretty good front end geometry over all, just issues with the small brakes, and swapping to an S10 spindle limits the actual benefits as its steering arms are kind of long, I am working on a redesigned tie rod that might fix issue along with being able to work other issues. Biggest thing I like is using the 98 up Blazer/Extreme spindle with dual piston caliper, bolt on abutment, hub/bearing allowing a possible bolt on arm, AND ability to up grade too Corvette brakes after swapping to 17 in wheels. Might be able to use LS calipers and 16 in brakes never had parts to test.
As for the front end needing help Jeff Schwartz built a Vega and it handled pretty good and on 15s.
Biggest thing I want SPC uppers for are the adjusters to be able to dial in more good adjustment over lower arm adjusters,,,and I am looking at a "kit" to allow moving the lower arm in or out to fine tune wheel clearance and track width slightly.
Over complicating the car by cutting really gets away from building it. IOf you want perfect parts build a round/square tube chassis and slap a clapped out body over it.
I thought is with adjusters I might be able to move lower arm in or out by 1/2" to 3/4" but might help other things.
I hope to get back with my fab welder as the crossmember is still over there, he had minor stroke this summer and my funds didnt allow me to move parts to another guy, he is doing it free for ability to make one for his StarFire. He is really stoked about my idea of an FI twin turbo 283 as his is a 307 with spacer bearings and 283 crank (crank bearings came from ex racer who moved to steel crank over cast) And since I will have 4 040 forged pistons he hopes to find 4 more and buy mine!
As for using 59" width, is this for what reason, just curious.
Only reason I am looking at 4wd is to be able to use more modern wheels over my deep dish Outlaw 2s.
Actually even found some Fast Fives from Summit IF I can swing cash for them.
Oh and Istill like using the SPC uppers from Marcus as it give easier adjustment.
For your project, try looking at HOW wide a tire you want, weight your looking to carry(ie any fiberglass/carbon fiber?) then measure wheel lips and see if G body style chassis could be modded. As G Bodies are similar to S10 and Monza seems to share a modicum of measurements therein AND G body parts make cheaper build Like ATS/Short spindle from Speedtech,,,.
Rather than uber special parts is point I am making, trying to make it like a Vette completely is kind of sideways engineering.

New 5.7 small journal I beam Eagle rods with cap screws and press fit. Now other than a rear main seal and digging out my bearings and doing the machine work on the block(owner lets me use equipment when I need to).
So polish my stock steel crank, clean up other 6 pistons and go through two sets of 6 forged 040 pistons and match up best 8. Then off to boring, honing with torque plate and squaring the block,,not in that order.
May still order set of small journal ARP main Studs as Ido have a moroso windage tray,,,,.
And have to finish up the double humps,,unless I could scrounge up L98 aluminum heads, the double humps are a go.
And I have all the part for them.
Then I am also toying of working with a "stock" GM computer out of a 93 S10 cause it was free, wire it up batch fire, try to adapt my DIS into working with it, gotta go pick up sensor bracket, new shutter wheel and do some mock up/mods to LT1 oil pump drive dummy,,,gonna swap in longer rod from scrap distributor and make a cam sensor set up into it also.
Seems Caddys just use a pin in end of cam to trigger it so Ill use front of old sbc cam, drill it out, and press it on and let it spin just under intake. Thinking of using GM front wheel speed sensor and just drill intake and bolt it in.
Lots of ideas and plans,,now just need time and weather,,finally got a few pieces I can now move forward,,at least too a point.
So 3 yrs later,,,,,,,onward we go.

When it was black in 1999 it had a 350 with a 10:1cr, Th 350 trans, '71 Nova front spindles and brakes, '87 S10 axles with '77 Camaro drums.
The grey primer color (I was going to paint it back to the original color yellow like your parts car) was in 2003. It had a 9:1cr 350 custom cam that let it rev to 7200 rpm, Holley street dominator intake, 800cfm Qjet, Sanderson shortie headers, saginaw 4spd, aluminum water pump, electric fans, poly trans mount, and poly torque arm mount. The wing kept it stable at 80mph and up. (The factory 3pc spoiler did too. Highly recommended.) It ran a tire spinning 12.98 at 119 mph in the 1/4. Shifting at 6700rpm. Top speed was 157mph. (A police friend shot it on a airport road.)
The last pic was in 2009. I had a 2000 buck Comp Cams solid roller cam kit and a set of 2.02 ported heads in the back seat when it was stolen from the yard it was in.
I miss that car. I'm always looking for another H body.

Those were '87-88 Chevy Celebrity head lights. I had the whole header panel from a friend who was junking their Celebrity. The head lights and mounts were grafted into the original Monza fiberglass support under the urethane header panel. I couldn't get it centered like I wanted so I left it. You can just see that it's not centered. Everyone told me it looked good
Oh and there are 2 wings. On the car when it was black, was a cheap adjustable wing from JC Whitney. The second wing is a 1970 Boss Mustang style wing also from JC Whitney.
When I first got the car in Las Vegas in 1986, it had a home made fiberglass spoiler that kinda looked like the center of the 3 piece from the factory. It had no ends. I never realized how well that spoiler worked until I removed it because it was cracking bad in the 90s. I drove it to about 70 - 80 mph and the rear would sway side to side and it felt like it could do a spin at any moment. It was a scary ride to me because I had that car at the Salt flats to 157mph. Verified by a cop friend who was with us back in 1986 and we ran it on base. (As I stated earlier. I also had a stock '75 Vette 350 in it then. Glad we didn't get caught.):wasntme:
I wanted to build it to run the Silver State Classic. :crying:

Well score one for the home team and more updating.
Finally got two oversized wrist pins for EBay score pistons that I needed 2 of. But seller pulled stupid and honed the pistons on pin hone and made pins too loose.
So for around $20 I finally got two new 0.0015" piston pins.
And did some work for service writer and scored a ZR 2 s10 rear end!
From measuring it might work better for fitting later Corvette wheels! And low and behold if I have proper measurements the ZR 2 rear will let me put a 17x9.5 56mm offset on in same place 2 WD had me running 15x8.5 3.5 in or -33mm offset AND have better rear end.
Now to figure out which speedo gear needs changed as I had my th350 set for the 3.42s and according to all my in for says all ZR2 is 3.73.
I guess I'll have to wait to see if it has gov loc or not.
Just being able to use an actual 8.5 GM rear end, and I am hoping for disc brakes also.
Weeeeeeee. Its is fun when luck goes my way.
Now all I gotta do is find some Corvette wheels. I figured out on rimsntires.com that by going to a 275/4x/17 on a 9.5" rim will fit in place of my 2745/60/15 on 15x8.5.
Now if I could figure out if I can get an 8.5 Corvette wheel squeezed into the front wheel well.

Or you could see if someone is willing to trade 3.42s for your 3.73s which would work better since you don't have overdrive. Plenty of guys with GM trucks and 4 speeds like to swap steeper gears for towing, mudding, or just acceleration in general.
BTW, the gov locks don't like dry pavement. Plenty of truck owners have found out the hard way. Don't know if maybe a lighter car might keep it from being an issue, but personally I wouldn't try it. I put a Truetrac in my truck. No clutches. Works awesome! Eaton actually recommends it over the posi for Circle Track and Drag Racing (see page 5). http://www.eaton.com/ecm/groups/public/@pub/@eaton/@per/documents/content/ct_128302.pdf

Yeah I know,,,,gov-loc = junk.
Been there, replaced that on several customers vehicles.
Yeah I have 3.42 7.5 2wd rear end in the car or well to go into this body.
Actually since I have been debating tire size and all and ZR 2 rear having just fell in my lap.
My luck at least netted me an 8.5 rear to handle my future turbos.

Dang every time I try to set links they erace when changing tabs.
So, 2 GT2871r eBay turbos
Cxracing I think, 2 into 1 intercooler
Generic intercooler piping kit
4 used Corvette wagon wheels, 17x8.5 18x9.5 215/40/17, 275/35/18
Corvette disc brakes front, S10 ZR 2 rear disc on ZR 2 rear end
LT1 harness to modify
325mm rotors front
ZQ8 2wd spindles
Still debating on which bov and if I'm gonna use integral wastegates or deviate
Most is gonna be ebay.
Front facing twin turbo headers from eBay.
2) T3/t4 to GT28 adapter or reflange the headers.
Run turbos out towards original battery areas on both sides. Point outlets down then route air forward to intercooler.
The intercooler I picture have center top outlet that will run to LT1 fi intake.
I will lose the hood latch I believe but will just use hood pins, saw some cool locking ones on here.
As Monza nose real estate is pretty close I'll lose the aluminum bumper reinforcement. Hoping for room for ac condenser.
Figuring on using type 2 PS pump as I have it.
CSI alternator. I do have a GM Gvan ac compressor.
My chassis ideas are Ridetech CoilOvers.
I am working on reinforcing cross member for shock mounting, and redesigning my forward upper control Arm mount crossmember.
I have refined it pretty good, figure I might talk to local suspension shop to help build them, possibly.
Or at least cut me the parts.
Also been debating Fays2 watts link.
Car still has factory panhard bar.
My biggest issue is selling enough stuff to help moving in different direction.

Hey Lee, I'm glad you got this going again. I wanted to share an idea I had for my 2+2. It was to use or duplicate an after market front frame still using the stock control arms and a pinto rack and pinion. My plan was to buy or build the Jegs race front end kit and mod it to the stock unibody. Look at the pic and you'll probably get the idea. I hope this can help you out.

So I have toyed with idea for years of using Northstar DIS on stock gen 1/2 SBC. And finally found place to replicate the shutter wheel I found off another fellows work in similar fashion.
So I found online sight to send the downloaded cad file and they laser cut, black oxide coated and even etched figures from pic on it shipped to me for $29!
This is the shutter wheel that matches Northstar 93-99. And my plans are to try to use the small wheel speed sensors if possible to fire my module. And in my 283 I'm gonna use the LT1 oil pump stub. Since the 283 has the tube down back of block that went to road draft tub my plan as to make a way to mount the stub in THIER, then I was planning on building a shaft to go UP towards intake, have it center in a bushing on under side of intake, and use another sensor to pick up a single cam signal so I can use the LT1 fi intake.
From what I've read, and a friend who made a custom opening and custom distributor the 283 is very well suited to use the LT1 intake. He has some very old AFR heads that aren't too big, and teamed up with custom cam he has gotten 535 NA out of it so far and then hit it with some giggle. The fact IM gonna use a couple of cheap GT2871R turbos and even milder can AND double humps with 202/160. My estimated number is 600 hp with 6000-6500 redline.
But pictures is my shutter wheel, now to get a hole drilled in it.

I missed your last update until now, but that little care will FLY with 600hp.
