So I'm in the market for a primer gun and I'm trying to get peoples' opinions on what they like. I think I want to go with either a SATA or an Iwata, but I'm open to suggestions. I'm not looking to buy a cheap $30 dollar primer gun, because I'm looking to get into the painting pretty seriously here soon. I'm an autobody student and will be graduating this june, and then a friend and I are going to open up a small shop painting cars and stuff so I want something that is a good quality gun.
I already have a digital SATAJet 3000 HVLP gun (WSB tip - 1.25) :worship: that i use for my base coat and clear and it works beautifully. I also have the Chip Foose edition SATA MiniJet 4 and the SATAGraph 3 airbrush:bananna2: . So i've got everything except for a primer gun.

I am currently looking at the SATA KLC RP with a 1.6 tip.
I will most likely be spraying PPG paints, but could possibly also be spraying DuPont. I'm wondering what you guys think about the tip size with the primer surfacer, or the epoxy, etc. I know the 1.6 tip is on the low side for the high build primer, but i think it's close enough it should work fine.

We have a couple SATA KLC hvlp guns at school that I have sprayed with (just used one yesterday) so I know what they're like and I've asked my instructor and he says they're a pretty good gun.

I'm just wondering who has used an Iwata primer gun or something similar and what their opinions were on them. Or if you've used the KLC and you like it or dislike it i'd like to hear it. As you can tell i'm kind of biased to SATA guns, but I'm open to opinions.

Thanks:headbang:

On a primer gun, I'm not so picky... but you can't seem to beat a SATA. I spray my clear with a SATA NR2000

What sort of primer do you plan on spraying? If you plan to spray polyester (sprayable filler) you'll want a cheap gun, that crap clogs anything up! But if looking for a nice primer gun for final prime and sealer, I'd probably go SATA for that too.

Shiny Side Up!

My gravity feed primer gun is a binks. Not real expensive, still easy to get a part for if needed. I could get it with a real large tip so it would spray even the heavy build primers. A couple of paint lines reccomend you don't thin their high builds. They won't spray out of a normal primer gun

I've got a hundred year old Binks 82, a POS ATD, and a DeVillbiss Finishline series. Honestly, with the correct nozzle, needle, and fluid cap there is no real difference. Besides, it all sands off the same.

honestly I laid down some primer for a friend with my Cambell Hausfield 6500 paint gun I bought a zillion years ago at Big Blue Stores, since they are gone I have seen them (I think)at Autozone and Walmart. I bought some cheap cups with lids and simply change over to new cup already filled.
Honestly just about any gun can lay primer. Astro Pneumatic makes some sweet inexpensive HVLP gravity guns.

lone*star, thanks for the offer, but i've already bought the gun i was looking at.
the prep really does require a lot of patience, but it's SO worth it in the end.
now hopefully i'll be able to use the gun pretty quickly to get my Vette painted in time for summer.

Get the SATA KLC with the 2.1 tip.

I have it and love it, i dont even get my sharpe cobolt out anymore for primer.

The 2.1 tip works great for gel coat(if ur doing alot of glass cars) and slicksand(i love that stuff)

Any gun with at least a 1.8. The bigger the better if you're going to be spraying slicksand. With a good gun you can buy parts if you need them the cheaper ones are just that....cheap. Use them until they need something and throw them away and buy another.

Hey Lone Star if you have them when my ESOP comes in in Juky i might be interested. Unless you know anyone needing any Pontiac parts.
