I am going to start rebuilding a 327 small journal. First off this car will get driven on the street quite a bit but not the highway very much at all. I have heads for it already, they are world sportsman IIs, 2.02/1.60s, 200cc intake runners and 64cc. I am thinking about going with the 10.35:1 rebuild kit from summit. I am also going to get my heads ported. The car has a powerglide with a 3000rpm stall and ill be going with 4:56 gears more than likely. Heres the questions i have.

1.What cam do you think i should go with for those heads and my rpm range?
2.Would a holley 650dp work fine?
3. Should i go with a aftermarket crank since i broke my last one?

thanks for any help you guys have,

I don't think you'll like a two-speed powerglide on the street with 4.56 gears. You'll have to shift at 20mph and then you're done. Fuel economy will be terrible with that combination imo-I would throw a TH350 or TH400 in it, step down to 3.73's (you don't need steep gears with that light of a car, anyway), go with a 750 Holley (not a DP) throw a .480-.500 lift cam with about a 284 duration and have fun. -Jabin

i think the powerglide will be ok. I have 3.08s in it right now and i dont shift to 2nd until 100-110mph. You dont think the 750 would be to much for a 327?

Aren't those small journal cranks all forged? Where and how did it break in street motor? Powerglide is a bad choice for that motor, actually it is better suited for a stick as it loves to rev. above are good suggestions.

i dont know how i broke it. I still dont see whats wrong with the powerglide if i had like 4.56 gears or so in it. I dont have the money to swap a manual tranny in there right now, i would love to do it someday tho.

I think those heads have too large a port for a 327. Have you read the Dec issue of Super Chevy? Read the Danger Mouse story. They used a 170 cc port on a 350.

Okay, the deal with a 'glide and 4.56's is this: what RPM range will your motor primarily see? And from that, where do you plan to build your power range? Most street engines see 1200-3000 most of the time with a peak power range of 3000-4500. With 4.56's and only two speeds, your around town speed could be 40pmh @ around 3000-3200RPM's. You will be well into your power range and that will make the car always feel "jumpy" and your mileage will be awful. Granted, going from a 3.08 to a 4.56 gear with some power behind it would seem nice, but you'll run out of gear before the car ever really gets moving if you want to get into it. Check with JW transmissions to see what gearsets they offer for street/strip powerglides-if you're hell-bent on 4.56's and a 'glide, then change to a higher gearset....your gas tank and valvetrain will thank you for it! -Jabin

All the 327 cranks were not forged was the crank snout drilled? The lo-po version were not drilled and were for sure cast. I have a couple forged 327 crank somewhere around here! :bananna2:

i am not hell-bent on 4.56s, but with the 3.08s right now i do not shift out of 1st gear until around 110mph. With 4.56s i do not see it being that bad. My motor should make power from about 2,800-6,500 rpms. Also, my car hardly ever goes on the highway.
