View Full Version : NO Horn relay, NO Voltage Regulator

Well here comes another electrical question for a 69 camaro..... I dont have working horns right now. In fact the wiring is there for the horns but I dont have any horns(so I bought some) The black ground wire is in the steering column BUT When I popped the hood, and looked on the firewall, there is NO HORN RELAY AND NO VOLTAGE REGULATOR.

1. So is it safe to assume that the reason I have no Voltage regulator is that my alternator has a built in regulator? Or do I still need an external one for other things in the car.

2. No horn relay(so I need to buy one I am assuming) But my question is this.... The horn relay if I am not mistaken has connections for the dk green wire(horn) the black wire (ground which runs into the steering column) the pink with black line wire (key buzzer) , a red wire (power from the battery) and another fusible link red wire (which runs power from the relay to the fuse panel).

But I dont have a horn relay in the car currently so what is powering the fuse panel currently? Could it be that there is a direct wire from the battery running to the fuse panel? Is this the way it should be with an internal regulated alternator? If not can I just cut that wire going directly from the battery to the fuse panel and put one end on the new horn relay and the other into the part of the relay that goes to the fuse panel? If so how do I make that end a FUSIBLE LINK? Do I need to?

Sorry for all the questions but I want to make sure I do it properly.

Thanks
Mark

You could get a horn relay from any car. Most only need 3 wires to work. There might still be a junction on the core support to get the power. You could also put the relay under the dash. Any small relay, 30 amps or so should run the horns.

The voltage regulator and horn relay is mounted to the right of the radiator opposite of where your battery would be mounted if not moved to trunk :)
