alright so i got the Moser 12 bolt rear end with 3:73 gearing..
but my man David at RKK told me that the gearing will be revving the hell out of my stock turbo 350 tranny.. seeing as i have to drive it home about 40 miles when im through.. eek..
we have another end there with 3:55 gears but figured that it wouldnt be that much of a diffrence..
anyone running the 3:73 gearing with a stock turbo 350?
im planning on the 4l60E soon but my cashish has taken i beating as of the latest upgrades..
i wish i thought it through better..
anyone can give a little light?
any suggestions or should i just tow it?
thanks fellas!

It sounds like this 40 mi drive is a one time deal and not a regular drive or commute? If that's the case, then I don't think a tow is necessary at all. Sure, it ain't overdrive but it's not like you will be doing 3500-4000rpm at 60mph. I quick ran it thru a rpm/speed calc and based on a 26.5" tire you will spin about 2800rpm at 60mph, and about 3100 at 65mph. Yeah, not ideal, but if you can keep it around 60mph I think you'll be fine.

yea i was hoping that it wasnt like im going to blow my tranny and kill my 406.
my wheels are 18x10s in the rear with 265 35 18s..
so should i stick with the 3:73s or go with the 3:55s?
im probably going to roll out at Grandma speed..

Gear ratio depends on your intended purpose and frequency of use. Weekend warrior?
Street only?
1/4 mile, road racing, autocross?
Take it on any weekend trips or a Power Tour?
The answers to these questions will dictate the gear ratio.

It's not gonna be too bad. If you can live with it on the 40 mile drive home, you can live with it around town. You could also look into a 200-4R for the future as a good trans for the highway entertainment and long drives. It won't kill your trans. Oh, and I recommend the 200-4R because of the better gear splits. If you plan on a Shrifter, the 4L60E is the trans of choice.

Personally I would stick with the 3.73s, but you could also do the 3.55s if you wanted - there really is not a huge difference.
Have fun with it!

It won't be that bad, and 3.73's are the right ratio for your future 4L60E. They will help you stay in your powerband when in OD. A lot of people ignore that aspect when choosing transmission/rear gearing. What good is OD if your car is going down the highway at idle?
Go for it.

I think we might have gotting confused a little when we were talking about this saturday your RPMs will be around 3000 or above with the turbo 350 @ 65mph.
With a 4L60e your RPMs should be around 2000 to 2200 @65 in overdrive.
An that is good cruzzing with a 400sb chevy with the cam that you told me you have. 480/480lift 292/292
Keep in mind this is a short rod 400sb, RPMs kill the Hell out of them. Lots of load on the piston skirts.
This is why i brought up the other Gear not that big of a jump but every little bit helps.
Sorry for the confusion.

I have a couple rears I run in my Firebird and use a stock Turbo 350 W/shiftkit and 26" tires. One of my rears is a 3.73 and under 60 it's fine. If I were you I'd just stay off the highways if possible. I've driven 50-75 miles on the highway with the 3.73's but it's not fun. Just sounds like you're revving too high.

Just think back 30 years...that's what they ran with.
There were no overdrives, and if you ordered a car with a manual trans, you often got those gears...heck, even the relatively low revving Pontiacs could be had with 4.33's (w/o air conditioning).
We tend to get used to the quiet, low rpm's of today's cars, and forget that's how we used to drive.
Sure, your mileage won't be great, but it won't be that bad.
My buddy ran 80 miles to the track with 4.10's in his 250-6 camaro (ran 12's in 1985). Sure, it was loud, those things just don't sound very good, even with the solid cam, but what did we know.
Good luck.
