AutoWeek | Published 04/18/07, 10:39 am et No one ever said going green means not having any fun, and the folks at Galpin Auto Sports in Van Nuys, California, certainly like to have fun. Evidence: the company’s Earth Day centerpiece celebration, a 1965 Chevrolet Impala transformed into a biodiesel-propelled hot rod nicknamed the “Bio Rocket.” The car (http://www.autoweek.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070420/FREE/70418005/1029#) will be featured in the fifth season of MTV’s Pimp My Ride.

“With the increasing amount of traffic on the roads, protecting the environment is a major concern for automotive manufacturers and dealers,” said Beau Boeckmann, president of Galpin Auto (http://www.autoweek.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070420/FREE/70418005/1029#) Sports, vice president of Galpin Motors and consulting producer and on-air talent for Pimp My Ride.

“By installing a monster 800-hp diesel engine to run on biodiesel in the ’65 Impala, we demonstrated that you don’t have to sacrifice power to go green.”

The Bio Rocket is fitted with a PPE supercharged GM Duramax diesel engine that runs on B-100 biodiesel, which reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 78 percent compared with a standard V8 gasoline engine. Boeckmann estimates fuel mileage at around 24 mpg.

Switching the Bio Rocket to alternative fuel did not compromise its performance and speed. In fact, horsepower increased from 350 to 800, with a monstrous 1400 lb-ft of torque. All that oomph propels the Bio Rocket from 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds.

The premise of the TV show is to take a person’s everyday ride, which often could be mistaken for something ready for the junk heap, and transform it into a customized showpiece. “On the show, we try and do things that are a little bit ironic,” Boeckmann said. “But at the same time, we try and make it practical and give the people a car they can really use, a car that enhances their life and can be a lot of fun.”

It wasn’t just the engine bay that received the green treatment. The Galpin crew created the seats from a material made of 100 percent recycled fibers. The Bio Rocket’s trunk is lined with biodegradable, all-natural hemp and reclaimed wood from preexisting wooden structures. Finally, eco-friendly meets convenience with a built-in GPS that shows the driver where to find the nearest biodiesel station.

“Galpin’s customizing innovation began in the late ’50s and produced national trends in the automotive aftermarket,” said Boeckmann. “Fifty years later, the after-market and tuner world has become a much greater part of the mainstream. We see Galpin’s move to green, ground-shaking horsepower as the ripple that can start a sea of change, and we are proud to start that right here, right now.”

And if you’re wondering, you could upgrade your own ride to the monster diesel powerplant for a mere $25,000.

The Bio Rocket was to be unveiled by California’s Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger during an Earth Day episode of Pimp My Ride on April 22.

Are you suggesting that a 1200 pound (!) engine could negatively effect the handling of a pro-touring car?

How could an extra 500 pounds on the nose have a negative effect on performance? It's TV man - it's all good.

I didnt see where they claimed it was pro-touring, but it sure would be terrible to get that thing moving and not be able to stop in a reasonable distance.

PS Its "PIMP" my ride not "Pro-Tour" my ride. And this is the coolest thing they have done

^^^ I definitely agree. Pimp my Ride is a show for non-hobbyist teenagers, so the cars are representative of that. The team at West Coast Customs does some amazing stuff and I'm excited to see this car. I think it's one of the most interesting hot-rods in some time. The car never claimed to be pro-touring and there are PLENTY of big-horsepower gasoline cars out there without the safety upgrades spoken of.

The show is not my style, but this Impala is way cool. A duramax is big, approx 835 lb dry, but so is an Impala. My 67 Impala is about 600lbs heavier than my Camaro. 800 HP and 1400 ftlb is neat in any car. I looked at several articles and not much is said about the chassis, but one pic looks to have some pretty big discs behind the front wheels. Remember an Impala already has a complete frame that is boxed from the rear axle to the front bumper, and has a four link rear. Not any worse a starting point than a Camaro and some would argue better. I'll watch and wish it was in my garage.

Agreed 100%. I subscribe to nearly every automotive magazine there is, from Auto Week to Old Skool Rodz and everthing in between. I can't count the number of times I've read stories about the mags wanting to see someone do a diesel torque-monster in an old car. I may be among the minority, but I think it's cool as s**t. I'd drive it in a heart beat.

The show doesn't use West Coast Customs anymore. It's "gas" now.

Watched the show this afternoon, cars cool - show sucks. Almost no details about the Impala but it did have Baer discs all around and a Currie rear - probably a nine inch. The engine looked like it fit ok but they cut a massive hole in the firewall and floorpan for the Alison transmission. Raced a Lamborgini at the track and of course the Impala won but you couldnt tell much with out times.

All in all, typical TV drama crap and nothing much of the vehicle.

Arnold had to stick his fat head in it.

Guys even though they didnt go enough into the car to show what they did the car was cool. The interior was tastefull they didnt make it a donk(thank you lord) This realy should have been an hour show.

And who ever talked down about the black guy using the slang and ebonix that wasnt cool. "Mad" Mike is a very smart guy who comes up with some wild stuff and makes it work himself.
electrical/mechanical guy that knows his stuff. The Pimp My Ride show is all bout going over board on cars that most would call the wreckers to come get and make em into some thing the owners can love. This was one of the only car Id own But my tastes are not the same as everyone elses.

lol. Samuel, there's a difference between stereotyping and immitating an actual person. It's called an impression. And therefore too specific to be an actual stereotype.
