Help me pick a mini starter

What do you guys recommend for mini starters? I've got a 350, 168 tooth flywheel, manual transmission. I was looking at the Summit starter, SUM-820323-M. 342 ft lbs, 9.5 lbs. I don't know the exact specs of my engine because the guy I bought it from didn't remember them, but I'd guess 9.5-10:1 compression since I have to use 91 octane or it pings.

It's probably overkill, but I'd rather get a starter with excess power than not enough. But if you guys have better recomendations, that's fine. I'd like to keep it under $250, also.

I am still running a PAW brand starter I bought 9 years ago for ~$145. 3 engines and 4 flexplates later, it still works like a champ turning my 10.8:1 383. Just shim and clock it right and it should be worry free no matter the brand.

BTW, I only bought the mini because even "Heavy duty" stock style starters were giving out in under 20 starts.

Yeah that's the reason I want a mini style. It seems like I go through a starter a year, and I'm sick of spending money, and more importantly, lying on my back trying to hold this 25 pound piece of junk while threading in a couple bolts.

Any preference to gear reduction or hitachi style? Is there even a difference?

It says it fits 168 tooth flywheels, but I could swear my block has the straight mounting surface not the staggered. I'd have to check on that, now.

Try giving them a call, if you have the straight mount, they might have one.
