If the dash vin and cowl tag are missing, where else in the vin located on these cars?

67-8 was riveted into the door jam... not the top of the dash like the 69 and later.

If memory serves me correctly, the only other place where the coresponding series can be found... (on the 67-8, cannot confirm that for the 69)... is behind the heater box, underneath the blower motor on the fire wall.

As Chicane said, on all first gens, and most other thorugh the years, under the heater box cover on the outer cowl, also on top of the cowl on the passenger side, under the cowl vent cover. 68 and 69 VIN tag are both rivited on top of the dash.

There are also 2 more, 1 on each sail panel under the qtr panels on 69s.

with a title in hand does anyone reproduce the dash tag or cowl tag?

Yes. I had to have mine reproduced. I can't remember the name of the company that did it (it was about 7 years ago) but I found them in Hemmings. I'll sort through my records and see if I can dig up the info for you.

68s are on the dash not the door jamb. They also are usually stamped on the top of the cowl just under, or partly under the hood weatherstrip area. Also stamped under the heater box, and on the subframe. Most states will not reproduce the vin tags, that is illegal. The cowl tag is just frowned upon by restorers.

www.trimtags.com (http://www.trimtags.com) This should get you your trim tag and they may have some guidance for you to get a vin ?

No numbers on subrames. When I was with US Camaro Club, I blasted tons of them, hunted all over, never found them. We also polled the 10,000 members to see if anyone found a number, Zero.

The numbers behind the quarters I have never heard of either, but admit I was not "hunting" for numbers there. But in all my years on the tech line and doing the registry, I never heard of it until now. I will be looking though.

As for replacment VINs, there was a place that could do it if you had a title and police verification of your numbers. Where the problem comes in is there are only the las 8 numbers on the body, which do not verify the first 5 numbers. So some police agencies may not touch it. Some times a notary can do it, but you will have to check your state laws.

Hey Frank-

The sail panel numbers are true for sure. I only know because my shell was such a ***** box and I saw them 1st hand. There was also a post of another build recently that actually showed them, I will try and find it. As far down as we are taking these shells these days, it is good to know these locations!
