I know it's a little early, but I was curious if anyone else on here was planning on attending the Monterey Historics event this year. I just nailed down all of my travel reservations so it's fresh on my mind. This will be my first time attending and needless to say, I am definitely a little excited.

I always PLAN to be there. I rarely ever actually make it. What is the featured marque this year?

Man, it's right in your backyard... Thats ok, there is a One Lap Stop at Beaver Run Motorsports Complex about 30 minutes from me... I have forgotten about it three consecutive years now...

Featured marque are the Indy Roadsters.

Both Dave and I will be there babysitting the Lola. PM either of us a month or so before and we'll swap cell numbers.

Can't remember what the feature marque is for 2007 but the entire event is a great car experience. Along with the actual Historics, the week leading up to it is filled with exhibits, off-site events such as The Quail and Corsa Italiano, and the Pre-Historics (limited entry vintage race the weekend before the actual Historics). It's the week where anything and everything exotic and erotic (cars, of course) is driven around the Monterey Peninsula.

Definitely try to make this week or any portion of it one to attend.

Cheers,
Mary Pozzi

This year the Marque is "Indy Roadsters" but it's also Laguna Seca's 50th anniversary, so the goal is to have the the major classes of cars that raced there over the years.
There are many side activites happening, several auto auctions, and the Italian auto show, a "tour" in Pacific Grove.

Will Can-Am be running?

Historic T/A has become a fixture of late but with all the other stuff (50th etc) will they still be on the schedule?

David Pozzi

CAN-AM YES!
Also an IMSA class with Vettes and turbo Porsches.
I believe they will have a TA class again but I'm not positive.

Sweet, I've never seen your Lola run in person.

IMSA Vettes? As in '76-'80 vintage?

Sadly no Trans-Am cars this year guys...they run every other year so no T/A cars till '08.

Still...so much exotic machinery around it'll drive you car crazy!:firefire:

I went last year and parked with the Mazda guys (I have a 93Fd RX7). First time at the event and it was great! It definatly has a "festival" atmosphere, lawn chairs, ice chests, lots of good vendors in the infield. If you looked long enough, you can find almost any type of exotic you have ever seen. I'll definatly go again this year, but have to say that I'm dissapointed that there will be no T/A cars running, that was the highlight for me last year.

Yep, Dave and Lola will be at Laguna both weekends. The Pre-Historics are this weekend (August 11-12) and the actual Historics are next weekend. The week in between is the coolest time on earth if you speak car as there's so much so do and see.

We'll be in the garages next to pit row so anyone that's reading this that's going to the races . . . please look us up.

My pit will be in the garages with the other Can-Am cars. We expect 35 or so cars, plus the Indy roadster exhibit will be fantastic! There will be cars from the Indy museum there and a Celebrity race of Indy greats!

Just downloaded some data on my race at Laguna Seca "Pre-Historics" today. cornering is generally in the 1.3 to 1.4 G range, except for the corkscrew where it spiked at 1.6G! due to the downforce and 1.5G in turn 10.
Acceleration in second gear is .87 G max, I don't use first gear on the track. At higher speeds it pulls .5 something G's. Top speed was 137 just before turn 2.

Braking G's 1.2

Oh! I forgot to mention my tires are two years old and getting pretty hard. I have a new set for next weekend and that should help a lot.

Quite an adventure today, I had an M6 McLaren spin in front of me and a Lola T-70 I was following dumped all it's coolant on the track. I was worried I'd spin in his coolant, he continued for most of the race and lost almost all his coolant.

Nick,
Go straight to the Baja Cantina on Carmel valley road on Thursday night! That's probably where I'll be.
http://www.carmelvalleycalifornia.com/baja.html

The place will be hopping and full of car people, Mexican food and usually a good band playing with cars outside to gawk at. Don't be suprised to see some really special cars there like real Cobras, Porsche race cars or Indy Roadsters.

The current issue of Autoweek has all the events listed, - too many to see in just one weekend. Check out the auctions on Fri and Sat nights downtown Monterey near the Fishermans warf. The Russo and Steele Auction at the Mariott has the cars on display in a parking garage just up the street, and the auction can be viewed on the street on a jumbo TV. The other auction is right across the street and the cars are on display in the courtyard near the warf. But you have to pay to get a close look. You can see them through the fence however.
http://www.rmauctions.com/Default.cfm?SaleCode=MO07
http://www.russoandsteele.com/monterey_auction_site.html

Sneak over to Cannery Row and take a look at the tourist stuff, if just to say you'd been there!

Fri afternoon there is a neat car show and cruse ending in a BBQ in Pacific Grove. Lots of muscle cars out on the street to view for several hours before they take off on their rally.

David,

It was great seeing you run on Sunday. Your car seems to be very well sorted out. It looked and sounded really good between 3, 4 and 5. I noticed you got someone going into 5. Good luck qualifying and hopefully you get a nice result in your race (you finished 3rd the last time I saw you run). The folks that come out too see you run are in for a real treat!

The Sunoco car had an interesting thing happen last year at Road America. The car ahead of him had a piston failure, pieces of the rings flew out the tail pipe and punctured the inlet screen on the scoop of the Sunoco car! The engine swallowed the pieces and he couldn't run the main race there. 2200 miles one way tow and couldn't run.

Oh, the car ahead kept going, - and ran the main race on 7 cylinders.

Well, Kathy and I were going to go this morning, but last night I checked the website to see if there were any restrictions on where one could enter if you needed to buy tickets at the gate.

Well the ticket price this year went up to $55. Sorry, but that is just too much IMO. I don't know who puts that thing on, but they just priced me out.

The really wierd thing is that honestly, Sears Pt. is a far better venue for spectators. But clearly, spectators are not the 1st concern.

David Pozzi

The gate price was $85 for Saturday!
Advance price was $65 for Saturday, didn't hear what Sunday was but $55 seems right. There are stores and gas stations in Salinas that sell tickets on race day with advanced pricing. You allways pay more at the gate.

What happens is, the charity's sell the tickets in line at the gate, the extra markup goes to them to fund their projects. They also direct parking and such and get a donation from the track for it.

I got my photo taken with Bobby Unser, got on the pit wall for the Celebrity race and eavesdropped on Parnelli Jones telling the guy pitted next to me about beating John Surtees passing both Chaparrals and winning his heat race at Laguna in his Lola T-70.

I broke a ring and pinion in morning warmups, no time to fix it before my race, so I missed it. I had a good time though and ran well the weekend before the "Pre-Historics" :)

I finally got my LM1 O2 sensor to work, it was over heating before. I also got some data from the Racepak system too look over. My car hit a G spike of 1.74g in the corkscrew! I'm thinking of Magnifluxing my axles now.. ;)

Sorry you missed the race Dave but sounds like you had a blast anyway.

Yeah...me and my buddies who flew in/drove in from all parts...drive over to the event Saturday all packed and ready to go (we drive what seems like 30 minutes in the backwoods of the old Ft. Ord) and our jaws just dropped when they told us $85...especially when all the ticket prices in print as late as Friday...all said $45/day.

Dissapointed was an understatement and I think SCRAMP and the Monterey Herald will both be getting a very scathing letter.I can see a $10-$15 overcharge for the day-of-event sale...but $40 more..PER?:ripped: No freaking way...

GREAT wknd otherwise, sorry we missed you guys...tell Mary I have her CD.:twothumbs

If you have it in print that low, I'd send it to SCRAMP, they need to know what the public thinks of their mistake on this.

I will be doing the same. My wife and I elected not to go due to the prices. We would have come at the advance price, and bought food/drink at the track while there. Instead, we spent zero dollars with them.

That is just too bitchin David.

I might just have to build one of the T-70 replicas someday.

At the top of the Can-Am game with the big-block McLarens, 917s and such were the Can-Am cars even close to F1 cars at the time?

Yes, comparing lap times on the same circuit, the Can-Am cars were faster than F1 cars.

Looking good Dave...always nice to be on fresh rubber, huh?

I have the Friday guide to the races (or was it in Thursday Herald?) which clearly states $45/day...it mentions nothing about those being advanced prices and that gate prices would be higher.

I'm willing to bet that Damn True & I weren't the only ones who were dissapointed...

You could actually download the Racepak software for free, then load the complete data "run" file I have. http://www.msdignition.com/G2Xtreme/downloads.html
Download the top file "Datalink II" and play with the sample files.

Or I have speed and lateral G data printed out that I could post here as a graph.

It would be great to see your data here. Actually though I was asking if there might be a book or net resource by which one might be able to see time records for F1 vs. Can-Am lap times from the late-60s early-70s.

David Pozzi
08-21-2007, 10:50 PM
I think the only place F1 and Can-Am raced was in Canada or Riverside CA.
Check here for info on race wins, perhaps they have qualifying lap times, then compare to common courses.

It was cool to act like the PRO racers. The hard part was unloading all the gear from the trailer then moving it all back!

Someone left me a nice hand pencil drawing of my car too.
I had a good talk with Peter Bryant, the designer of the successful Shadow Can-Am cars. A brilliant guy and very funny, he likes to tell jokes.
