I finished the first part of the exhaust on project formula454. The exhaust consists of;
Hooker SUper Comp 2" primary headers Ceramic Coated
Flowmaster 4-2-1 Scavenger collectors into 3.5 collector
Flowmaster "Ball and Socket" collector ends
Flowmaster "D-Port" crossover and elbows all 3"
Dynomax Ultraflow 3" offset/offset mufflers
Soon to come and be installed 3" Pypes Tailpipes

I cut it all up and welded it together in my garage, as you can see i don't have jack for clearance under the car. It seems i have pretty decent ground clearance. The top of the headers are about 1/8" away from the bottom of the floor. They were so high up i had to notch and box in the tranny crossmember so the top of the collector would clear the crossmember. The mufflers are pretty close as well, the pipes are about halfway up in the tunnel. It appears on the passenger header for some stupid reason on of the tubes hangs way lower than the rest, i didn't realize this until they were coated. After it gets banged up i will take that header out, cut out that bend and reweld a new one higher up and recoat it......
I have a problem with the tailpipes. I have this big fuel system and it seems My fuel pump will be right in the way of the passenger tailpipe. Look at the pic and tell me what you think! I guess i will have to get creative, thanks!

My solution to the fuel pump interference would be... just dump it in front of the axle :D

If the car has to get inspected it wont pass. Even in Canada where we have pretty much no emission laws it still has to pass over the axle while being inspected. After that you can go before the axle.

Also, What fuel pump are you running? Is it just a big external or do you have an intake too?

just the one you see in the pic. I don't have too pass any inspections. I think i just have to move the pump some :(

Are those hooker super competiton headers?
I just bought one of those and I'm sittin here, waiting for them...

Do you think you can take some pics that show how much they hang down? (pictures from front and side..)

Looks good Yody. Exhaust is nice and tucked. Just get some thermal barrier sleeving or reflective tape and cross the fuel line over the pipe as far rearward as possible (cooler exhaust temps). The other problem that I see is that you ran braided line front to back. Braided line suffers from something called "Permeation". On a hot day, the hose "sweats" just enough to stink up the garage but not enough to cause a leak. That's straight from the horse's mouth: David Barker at XRP. I thought he was pulling my leg (Sweating fuel line?? Yeah right.) But I made the switch and he was right. If you run into that problem, you will need to switch to hard line for most of the length.

yeah i heard about the stinky thing. Oh well, my mom's going to have a fit over the stinky garage sinch i store it at her house! I think i am going to have to move the pump and filters inboard to clear the tailpipes. I had a really nice system going. but i have to redo it know. Ripper those are super comps, they are 2" primarys, but remember they are on a 454 not a pontiac, next time i get a chance i will snap a shot. There is one stupid tube on the passenger side that hangs down more than everything else. Later down the road after it is crushed from hitting, i will take that header out and cut out that bend and move it up higher and then recoat that header.

Ripper,
For a Pontiac motor in a 2nd gen, I'd get a hold of the guy on Performance Years that is producing Tri-Y's. The ground clearance and performance is incredible.
Go to the Exhaust section and do a search for Tri-Y's or go to TransAm Country and check out the info there. I know I've seen you on these sites, so I'm guessing you know the addresses.

thanks for the info, but the tri-y's are shorty headers right?
I read a test about them, and they didn't free up more horses than stock ram air manifolds.

I bought a pair of hooker super competition, ceramic coated, on ebay.. I will try them, and if I don't like them, I'll modify them for my needs.

Ripper,
No, Tri-Y's are not shorties at all. The ones you are thinking of are produced by Hedman. The consensus on those is the are no better than R/A manifolds.
The headers I'm talking about are made for 2nd gen 'Birds w/ real Pontiac motors. The build quality will put the Hookers to shame. No kidding, they are that nice. The tubes are made from 14 gauge and the flanges are 3/8" thick!! They tuck up really nice too.
I bought a set of the Auto only models for $365.00. The new revision (it fits auto/manual and 68-72 A body cars) is slightly higher. If you have a hydraulic clutch, they'll work for you too.
Go to the PY site and look in the exhaust section. There are pix of the ground clearance these things offer.

Yody- Have you considered mounting your fuel pump on the back side of the lower rear passenger seat back (if that makes sense)?

Thanks for the info John!
I'll think of this when it's time for new hedders. However, I'll try the super comp out since I already bought them..

Where's the PY site?

We don't need to get more off topic in this thread so send me an e-mail

Thanks!

Ripper,

I have been following your project on various boards for a while. Nice car. Here's a couple of links re: the Tri-Y headers. I have a set of D-Port Tri-Y's from Ron (Tunnel Port) Watt. Excellent build quality, 14ga tubing and 3/8" flanges. Email him if you are interested. Tell him "Formula8" or Steve sent ya':
