I can't decide what to do...
Right now I have 275/50 and 255/50 tires on 17's. Should I go to 40 series tires or keep the 50's? Reguardless, Im going to lower the front another 1", but need to make up my mind before doing so.... Not sure what route to go and which look that I like?????

After the Eibachs: (Front still needs to come down)

I would say that it needs to come down all the way around, unless you are in a high water area! Just joking, I like it, but I would drop it at all 4 corners. BTW, I voted for the 40's.

I think the amount of tire you have is good. The front could come down a little. And the back a little less. I like the front tire right at the fender lip and a slightly larger tire the same in the back.
Car looks great anyway. That's the body style a buddy of mine loves. I'll have to show him this when he gets back from basic training.
P.S. If you went with the 40 series, how much shorter would the tires be overall. B/c right now the tire and fender shapes match perfect. Dont want to have too small of a tire on there.

What tires are those?

Yeah man, go with the 40's and drop that dude all the way around. Those cars can look down right mean with the right stance.
Keep it up man, that thing is sweet.

The tires are Nitto 450's... and they are 27.8 and 27" tall..!
If I went with Nitto 555's 40's, that would put me down to 25.7 and 25".. That'd leave me with even more gap... I'd have to lower it even more.
I can lower the back easy.. I have air lift springs to perch the rear up slightly so I could let the air out there... and I'd install the tall lower ball joint and should get me down .5-.75" up front.

I'd say lower it first and see where it puts you. The front can easily go ~1" it looks like with the current tires. I run a 28" tall tire on the back at stock ride height and a 26" tall tire on the front with 3" drop springs. My rear needs to come down an inch or so.
I really love the lack of chrome too.

The car looks great.
If it were my car, and I had to choose, I'd drop it an inch or two, but keep the existing tires. Or, if it's an option, switch to an 18" wheel/tire combo, but I wouldn't make the current wheel/tire combo any smaller than it is now.
Start with the drop though, I bet it will look pretty sweet as is once you get that done.
Did you ever pick a name for it?

Alright.. I'll drop it about in 1-2" up front and see where that puts me. I'll bring it down in back too... If it rubs, then I'll go with the 40's. But I agree.. it's up in the clouds too much!

Not yet.. still need to decide!

Voted 40, think 45s are a good bet and lowering it an inch or more in front and about an inch out back. The stance will be killer then!

What kind of power are you making? And how are those for traction and handling? I want to go with 275-50-17 rear tires, but the Nitto NT450's are not rated very well... not even on their own website.

Just drop it an 1" all around, add a front spoiler and you're done.

They are great tires... I just have a 330hp crate engine..
"amcmike : Just drop it an 1" all around, add a front spoiler and you're done."
It is missing the front spoiler.. I have to put it back on.. that will help it look lower too.

Oh no this tread is back! Man the tires and stance I'm running are embarrassing! :hand:
I've decided to go with 40's and sell the current tires if anyone's interested.
I'm going with a 285/40-17 and 255/40-17 up front. Also going to drop it pretty good with 3" OPG springs. I wanted to do an AirRide but its not in the budget with another project in the works - plus I'm kinda trying to avoid the whole 79 Monte 'lowrider' stigma associated with these cars..

Tony,
Just a thought..will a 285 fit on the rear? I tried a 285/40/17
on the elky with a 17X9.5 rim (TTII) and it rubbed! I know
there different cars, but I would go with a 275 unless your sure.
And on the front I did a 245/45/17 for my likes.I think the 255's
would cause a issue when turning, possible rubbing? Iam not tryin
to discourage you man..But it would suck bad to have them rub.
Its a tight fit..I know that guy who did a 315 or so on his Monte
but he did the frame notch and everything.Looks bad ass though!
Here is John's link on his amazing Monte!

Here is a link that I found interesting about different wheels/tires.

Your Monte is looking killer as always!
Good Luck!

Jim, the 3rd gen Monte has larger openings than the Malibu/El Camino wheels wells. Here's the comparison:
275/50-17 (11.10 section width on 8.5) vs. 285/40-17 (11.38 sw on 10 rim)
So with the adjusted sizes on the 9.5 rear that I have now, the 285/40 shouldn't be a problem. I'm sure I'll have to roll the lip some when I lower the rear but that's no biggie.
