Hello everyone. Just wanted to introduce myself. My father and I are having a 1970 Nova built by Troy, over at rad rides. I have already talked to a few of you on here and everyone seems pretty nice on this forum. We look forward to working with Troy and get ready to see our build up of a car my dad had when he was in his 20s.
I might post some stuff up here (picts etc) but I think Troy is going to have stuff on his website of the build.
Any guys from chicago...you WILL see this car on the road and at the local car shows (downers grove, lemont etc). These machines were ment to be driven! More to come!

70 or 71. I'm sure more than a few on here is waiting to see a Nove with the Ride's treatment.

cuda-Its going to be something similar to the caliber of rogans cuda and the fastforwardfastback. Nice paint, guerilla undercoat, big motor and killer suspension.
go-fish- Funny you say that..."70 or 71" We bought a car from pennsyl from this guy that told us the car he was selling was rust free and had no problems. The thing sat for about 9months before troy took it in last week. Ends up, they strip the car down and the guy totally lied to us about it. We had to junk practically the whole body. That car was a '71 and well disguised. Moose found us a car within a day and today we visited the shop and saw the "new" 1970 car. From the looks of that one...it looks like a solid car. The cool part about this car is that no one has really done a killer 70's nova yet...its going to be exciting!
If anyone is looking for some stock nova parts call rad rides..they have our car in pieces over there.

The project sounds awsome. Is there going to be a rendering?
I knew it was a matter of time before they would to do a 70's Nova! I just wish it would have been mine!
My favorite builder ...... just wish they would update there site more with CURRENT projects, they are still showing build pics of the 66 Chevy which was finished a few months back, nothing on there about the Nova.

69 Nova-
There was a rendering done about a year and a half ago. I dont want to post it up here until the car is done. Reason being it spoils all the fun of watching the car take shape. Besides that..the paint job is going to be totally different from what it shows rendered.

If anyone is down there and grabs some pictures (Marty) thats fine with us. Ill probably be posting some myself anyway.

Update on the car.
Visited the shop today and the car is completely stripped down. Car had virtually no rust at all. Even in spots where these cars notoriously rusted, it was clean. I will post some picts of what the car looked like originally. Engine arrived earlier this week as well.

Ok so I decided to post an early version of the rendering (no paint)to give all of the Nova guys a taste of this thing. I think everyone else will like it too. I saw the thread started in lateralg on our project but I couldnt post for some reason. Someone post the rendering over there if you like.
This is 3 versions of the front end. The idea my father was going for throughout the car was to make it clean. Lighten up on the chrome and keep it simple (hence the camaro bumpers). I think in the final drawing we eliminated the side mirrors or put smaller ones on there. Of course a lot of ideas are going to be from Troy and we are going to roll with his and the crews thoughts. :headbang:

OK Derek, we need to talk. Please PM or call, better yet have Murray Pfaff from Pfaff Design contact me. He'll remember me from the lengthy conversation we had regarding the UNIQUENESS of my design for my 70 Nova at last year's Pro Touring dinner at SEMA.
He has a great eye and an even better memory apparently.

Ben,
This rendering was done very early on in 2005. The actual "final" design doesnt look at all like yours. Getting rid of the big stock bumpers was our idea that we got from Troys Cuda and we told murray to incorporate that into our design. I wanted to post something up here to show the direction we are taking this car without totally giving it away. More to come.
Thanks for all the complements/suggestions thus far!
Stang97, The induction style hood is pretty cool.
Going to be a Fun build to follow for sure! How they doing the suspension? .....

For the record, this is a brief update on the situation some may see is developing here.
Derek and I discussed this issue via PM's to avoid any unnecessary and inappropriate mudslinging that could potentially become a source of flared tempers and regretable comments from anyone.
Here's the deal, I'll try to keep it short:
Derek claims that he and his father were inspired by Joe Rogan's "Sick Fish", that featured a shrunken bumper. He asserts that this idea to apply the same treatment to his 70 Nova came "a year and a half ago". Which is also when he said to have commissioned Murray Pfaff to complete renderings (shown above).
For those of you who have seen the gallery pages of my website or are members of the other G-machine forum that have seen the rendering I completed on my own personal car (also posted above), you may have noticed the mods I am planning on that are strikingly similar in Derek's renderings. Such as: shrunken bumpers, custom lower valences with chin spoiler, air intakes, front fender vent. After months of research of Nova mods, that is the design I came up with that I felt was a significant and unique change to the styling of that body style of Nova. This concept has been publically available since Spring 06. (Regardless of when I actually completed the rendering or conceived the idea. That is purely hearsay.)
As I mentioned previously, I had a conversation with Murray Pfaff at the ProTouring dinner last Nov at SEMA where we looked at my portfolio and discussed the details of my 70 Nova, as shown in the above renderings. There was not only no mention of this ever being done or thought of before, but he commented on how innovative and unique the design was. Had it been mentioned or even hinted, I would have immediately changed my design to retain a significant level of uniqueness. It is difficult for me to believe, with the info and impressions that I have, that it slipped his mind or that he purposely didn't warn me to change my direction. Again, this could all be hearsay.
So, after 39 years of the gen3 Nova's existence, two parties came up with the same mod(s) conceivably within 6 months of each other. It may be hard to believe but stranger things have happened. The only tie breaker would be the first publically viewable rendering of the proposed design. Perhaps someone can find out if this has, in fact, been done before. It will render this argument a moot point. (no pun intended)
After all that, Derek assured me that the renderings he posted (above) were preliminary designs that have gone through some level of evolution that would make undeniably clear distictions between my design and wherever they end up.
Like most people, I am a huge fan of Troy's work and I admire his professionalism. With that said, I have no doubt in my mind that Troy and his incredible team will provide Derek and his dad with a truely unique and killer ride worthy of an enormous amount of praise and envy. LOL. I share the same amount of sincere excitement as everyone else when I say I can't wait to see how it comes out. This will be a great project! Good Luck Derek!:twothumbs

Quick update.
Front part of the floors were swiss cheesed a little bit so they were replaced with new metal from... I believe year one. It was only two small sections 12"X12" on the driver and passenger sides. Front clip is enroute and the transmission has been ordered as well. Next week should be more exciting!

Update on the project.
Rear axle along with the front subframe have arrived. Mini tubs have been welded and are completly installed. Alot of body stuff has already been done. I asked Jared what he thought of our car versus Joe Rogans Cuda and he said ours was even cleaner than his (rust condition wise). My father and myself spent an hour with Troy and about 45 min with Bob Thrash talking about where we want to go with the rear and front of the car. No final conclusions were made...but Bob is going to do a couple renderings for us to look at next week. By then the rear and front suspensions should be on the car.
The front is pretty easy because everything is already there, you pull it off the pallet and bolt it to the car. Workin on getting some pictures for everyone to check out. Troy is going to fedex me some so I can put them on here. Also we are leaning on 19s in the rear with 345s and a 18" front tire with 275s.
What are the plans for the suspension? are they going to do coil overs?
So Bob Thrash does still work with them, does he also work on his own or strictly for Troy?
Cannot wait to see the update photos!

Update!
Got a few pictures from today.
Here you can see the floor of the car. Floor is perfect except for the very front of it. This picture shows the floor after Jared welded in a new small panel.
16868
This is showing how clean this car really was. Here are some parts off of the front of the car.
16865
One fender had a small patch put on it about 3"X3" and the other one was perfect with zero rust.
16866
Finally, here is a picture taken down the side of the car. All original panels. You will notice all of the marker lights are shaved off, this is the same on the front fenders. Also the stubs that hold the trim are also removed and filled.
16867
Baer brakes should be in any time soon and the throttle body came in via ups while we were there today. Still working on the rear suspension (DSE stuff). Enjoy!

Whats the plans for interior? any new photos?
Thanks
Havent really discussed this part of the project at all. We were thinking about doing a recaro style seat in the front with a short backing to it. As for the rear sear we will go with the bench style. More then likely it will all be black interior with some sort of insert on the seat. No new photos, camera has been acting up. I will tell you that the build is going well.
We stopped by the shop last sunday and had dinner with Jared. He is doing most of the work on the nova. We talked about some stuff related to what he was doing to the suspension. According to him, subframe connectors and engine placement are the next things to be accomplished on the list.
In the beginning we were so ahead of ourselves with everything due to the initial overwhelming excitement for the car. Now that we are back on earth again we are approaching each step of the car as it comes to us. Like Troy said to us in the beginning...we can decide on a paintjob as the car is being built, but our ideas/colors will change 100 times before we get to actually painting the car!
Peace.

Not too much new. I guess they are working on smoothing the firewall and finished the trans tunnel. The front of the tunnel needed to be reworked to make room for the 4L80e. After this is done they are going to do some work to the rear and front of the car.

As of last week the tail lights where being fitted. This proved to be more work than originally thought. The problem is that Novas have a slight curve to them in the back. So you are trying to fit a straight light in a surface that is slightly curved. Rear bumper was also cut up in a bunch of places and refitted. Now its only protruding out of the body line about a 1/2 inch. All of the gapping has just about been complete. Once the rear end is complete the front will be the final part of the body work. The brakes finally arrived as well. They are baer 6 pistons with "rad rides" inscribed on them. They are massive, something like 15" front 14" rear. Check this out.

Stopped by the shop quickly to see what was up. As you guys saw the bumper and taillights are in. The area below the bumper has been finished up and looks sinister. The gas tank has also been installed. This required a little bit of work since we didn't want the tank to hang low. You really wont be able to see the tank when you look at the car from the rear. Rocker panels have been lengthened and are completed. Also the steering column is installed. After next week it will be onto the front end of things.
Haven't discussed paint at all. I think the tough part is going to be what style of rims we go with. Any ideas on that??
And look what I got while I was there!

Front end is almost completed already. Most of its work was done behind the scenes to get everything to fit correctly. Fab work on the exhaust has begun. Jared started on the driver side header. Work on it slowed a tad this past week because of the prep work for "blowfish" at the salt. Probably another week or two on the front end. After that I don't know whats next. Pretty much all of the fab work has been completed. A roll bar is still up in the air and a possibility.

Jared is resp. for most of this front end construction. On to the headers, Adam did an excellent job. They have such an incredibly close tolerance to the the frame and the engine. The driver side header just about wraps around the steering shaft. As for the third picture...well you know what a friday night, some beverages and the crew at rad rides leads to. haha..Nova 4 life!
We are visiting the shop right before the joliet, IL goodguys show. Work on a small rollcage has begun and will probably be complete by then. If anyone attends the show be sure to let Troy know about the excitement with this car. It really is a dream for my dad and it shows how bad and sinister our novas can look. This thing is going to look "nasty" in the rearview!
Enjoy! Almost ready for paint!

Hey stang97, I frequent Troy's shop. In fact I'm going this week. I am a freelance photog for some of the Primedia mags and would love to get it into one of them. I've mentioned it to Troy and seems to be on board. I recently shot the Hurricayne for PHR and did the posters of the 40 ford they just completed. I love nova's and yours is looking really good. I am really looking forward to seeing the completed car. When is the project finish date?

The blower setup is similar to alot of street legal race cars... in those, you force the air back into the car to an ice / water filled intercooler where the passenger seat usually lives or in the trunk, then plumb the charge back through the cowl into the throttle body. It's going to be pretty trick looking.

We started out with an idea of where we wanted to go with the project but over time you find yourself adding more cool stuff to do to the car.
The only basic overall design element we came up with was that we wanted a car that had a spooky look to it. Something that looked menacing, nasty, sinister...whatever you would want to call it. It had to be functional so that we could drive it hard if needbe. Color is also something we wanted to pick from the beginning. As mentioned in the v8tv video, my dad had one of these 70 novas when he was 20 and his was the charcoal grey. So the car has to be some sort of dark charcoal with a thrash inspired twist to it.
Bob Thrash is the design guy at radrides but its a team effort where everyone has some input. We went with Troy because we like the way he builds his cars. I think thats the best way to do it. Pick some builders, check out how they think a car should go together and go with the one that vibes the best with your ideas.
Troy mentioned the YearOne event.. is it possible the car will make it there?
I would say thats a possibility, he told my dad he wanted it completed by may.

I asked the guys at the shop the same question. They will sometimes use a thin layer of oil and use a pad across the surface, but the building is climate controlled which reduces the chances of surface rust.

Great picts. When you look through the grill and see that procharger it just looks absolutely mean. Levi's the man for the job on that setup. Did an incredible job on it. The core support/supercharger cover he built is gorgeous.
We also have a color for the car, it is spot on and looks spooky. They painted a small panel for us to check out and the color change in certain lighting is amazing. A dark charcoal will be used. I know i keep saying this but this time its a reality...body shop any day now.

sounds correct. As for the front i think its about a 245 40 18 But im only sure about it being an 18" tire. Btw..according to the guys at the shop the rear tires on this car are very rare. I guess its a tough size to get in an 18"

haha..how bout a purple and yellow two tone??? That sounds perfect. I promise if we do a two tone it will be tasteful. The only two-tone that really doesnt appeal to me, that Troy has ever done is the corvette "split second" but the owner insisted on the purple color! Everything else looks pretty awesome coming out of there.

i have a question...maybe the pics are decieving but is the supercharger bracket mounted directly to the chassis? it looks like there is some sort of flexable mount in pic 109 in the build pics.
Anyways cool car..ive been following Troys builds for quite some time...and had the chance to see a few in person but pictures never seem to do them any justice.
Do you plan on having it in Columbus at GGuys? i been considering taking the trip down to the show from Canada and would be awesome if i got to see the final project in person. Hopefully you will be competing against the Ringbrothers Camaro if i make it there!

Supercharger bracket is directly welded to the frame with the throttle in the fender. It is going to be at columbus and either myself or my dad are going to show up to watch it do its thing around the autocross. I am interested to see all of the other cars run the track, esp the ringbros car. It will be fun times for sure.

I dont really know much about how they decide what cars to build and not build. I have seen the strope nova which is more of a stocker but still pretty cool. Ours is more of a protouring car. Big motor, big blower, killer suspension etc. As for attention to detail you cant beat radrides work.
Its best to visit the shop you are looking into for your build. I have heard good things of schwartz but do not actually know him or have ever been to their shop. Project sounds cool, what are your plans for it? Big motor, suspension???

The nova has completed the body work. It was shot with primer last week and currently is in sealer. The sealer is a green color and "green is good", because the next step is paint! I have one picture of the car in primer but its really not worth putting up b/c its just the front fender. Things are going to go fast from this point... so keep watchin!

Heres a quick shot of the subframe. Gives you a little idea of color. Also they cleaned up all of the welds on the DSE piece and smoothed it out in places. It looked good as is but they made it even nicer. Also we needed to get different springs because the originals were for a small block. The new ones are 2 inches longer and have a higher spring rate.
The car is still being sanded in sealer. Currently the firewall, interior and roll cage are painted. They also have sprayed the underside of the car with the speedliner for protection from debris. Adam and Jared told me that the rest would be painted this week, probably on weds or thurs.
