My Camaro eats Distributors?

Today I did a nice little burn out. Right when I shifted into 3 rd gear I heard a thump and the engine stalled. Would not start again. I thought I had broke another timming chain but discovered I had blown up the distributor. It is the third one I have done this to in 6 months. I have no idea what may be causing this. These are Pro comp 50,000 volts distribs and should not blow like this. Anyone with any ideas of what is going on? :hammer:

The rotor cap completely came off and Broke apart, and the distributor cracked in three parts and knocked loose all the brass contact rods. The cam gear is in fine shape and shows no damage at all.

WOW.

I have never seen that on a Mallory... needless to say three of them in six months. The only things I can think of are, incorrect installed depth and engagement... incorrect alignment thru the manifold... and the most probable, cheap base castings. Never been a fan of Mallory's product line... with the exception of their non-Comp9000 items.

What a bummer. Looks like its time to step up to the plate and get a real distributor. Since Summit is loosing MSD... look for some good prices as they liquidate their MSD stock.

But still look into the manifold alignment and the depth in which it is being installed. Those are the two most common distributor killers.

Are you sure there is nothing on the firewall that the distributor hits when the engine "torques over"?

are you running a vintage intake manifold? I have seen some older castings twist and warp when torqued down to the heads making the distributor alignment hole and issue and binding against the shaft. More than likely Chicane is right about it being a Mallory issue. That product line is poor compared to the MSD units. I had a Comp 9000 come unglued at the big end once and that was it.

:banghead: I figured it out. I had a broken motor mount. every time I floored it the engine would raise pushing the cap into the firewall. I'm thinking of going with a solid motor mount OH HELL might as well put in the 427 I want. Thanks for all the replies.
