whats it like getting wisdom teeth pulled?

i have to go in tommarow morning at about 5am for an emergency wisdom teeth pull. i can almost not shut my mouth whats this going to be like?! i will admit im a puss when it comes to pain. :scared:

As long as your doc knows what he's doing, and as long as you get decent painkillers.

When I got mine out, I was loaded up with nitrous, and then the doc and his assistant, the most beautiful girl I've ever seen, with the ridiculously pleasant name of "Velvet Dawn" (no kidding) started a sing-a-long as they yanked out my wisdom teeth.

Then I went home, napped, popped vicodin as necessary, and recovered.

It was a hassle, but overall it was pretty mellow as far as medical procedures go.

I'd bet you're probably in more pain now than you will be after they get yanked.

I was so stoned off meds, it was awesome. The blood clots in the gums suck for awhile. Get good PILLS. demand them.

i am recovering from my wisdom teeth removal. if i type jacked up its because im on pain killers. they numbed me with a local anesthetic. the pulling went fine. but it now feels like i have a broken bone in my jaw when the vicoden wears off. i think i have dry socket. im going back. it will be ok for you as long as you get lots of pain killers. the surgery does not hurt. its the after

well its 4:40 and i was just in the hospital for a ear infection that woke me up in the middle of the night, annnd i have to get my wisdom teeth pulled today this sucks! they have me on vicodin right now so that may or may not help with the pulling.

ok ill just look forward to the aftermath after they are pulled cant wait!!!!

I know you are already done by now, but given that your teeth have broken through already. It should be easier for the doctor to do anything. Worse is when the teeth are impacted or deep.

I had mine removed a few years ago and it was a breeze! All 4 of mine were totally impacted and the roots were a tangled mess in my jaw bone. My dentist gave me only a local anesthetic while he did quite a bit of work to get them out (I'll spare you the details). He gave me a mild pain killer which I only needed 1 dose of that afternoon. By 7PM that night I ate a regular dinner with only mild discomfort.

My wife had hers out 2 weeks later (different dentist) and had to be totally sedated. Interesting conversations with her after she was released.:rolleyes: She was in pain for a couple days and had to have tons of pain killers.

Experience probably depends on the individual and the dentist more than anything else. Most of my friends and relatives had an experience similar to my wife.

Had an oral surgeon remove my wisdom and a 5th tooth in Dec. I was out, woke up to 5 missing teeth, was eating lunch 3 hrs later at IHOP.

Never took the big pain meds, face looked puffy for a week though.

It hurts like an m'fer. No I am just kidding. Mine were not an emergency removal, but not far from it. I was in major pain & was ready to pull them out myself. I had them taken out on a friday morning & that evening I was at a Brookes & Dunn concert. Doc gave me vicaden (sp?) for pain & I never opened the bottle. They put me out when they did it, if that is an option I would definetly go that route.

Yeah, I had all 4 done at the same time. I was given a general anesthetic.

When I woke up it was all over. It did take a few hours to come out of it totally.

I don't remember what meds I was taking after that, but they didn't work.

Oh man, I was out of commission for at least three days. Mine were all impacted and had to be broken apart. I was out cold for the surgery, so no problem there, but the recovery was not so great. Had to use a baby spoon to eat my mashed potatoes cause my mouth wouldn't open wide enough to fit a normal spoon. And as for chewing, yeah right, wasn't gonna gappen. It was kinda hilarious, I looked like a puffer fish who had just been in a fight.

My girlfriend got all four of hers out 4 days ago and she's nowhere near as bad as I was. She's taking the vicodin they gave her and it still hurts, but it doesn't look like she's miserable in any way.

You'll be fine, enjoy the days off work!!

I had all 4 of mine pulled at the same time, didn't feel anything during the procedure except some pressure. It was kind of cool to hear the teeth crunching and breaking as they pulled them out. The next day I was out and about taking nothing but Motrin, so I could drive, I had a mild headache but not too bad. I have video of me that day, Both my cheeks were swelled up like balloons so I looked like a chipmunk--it was hilarious!

Man this thread makes me nervous. I have 4 impacted wisdom teeth and so far I have not had any pain. I'm 36 now. My dentist always asks me about them, "Are they hurting?". I always tell him, "Nope". He's been after me to have them pulled before they do start hurting and I've just been too chicken. I know that day is coming though.

My experience wasn't bad at all. Just two upper wisdom teeth were pulled as I never grew lower ones. They had to be removed as they had negative camber and a lot of toe-out.

Was awake but had a local and nitrous (great stuff, BTW, and I'm very envious of engines that get to use it on a regular basis). Felt a pulling sensation but no pain. Was a bit sore that same day but ate pizza the day after with no major problems. Just stayed away from the open "sockets." Healed well and quick, too. Never had to take the aftercare painkillers they gave me as Advil worked fine.

I had mine done by an oral surgeon and with general anesthetic. All four of mine were broken through the gum. I was uncomfortable, but don't remember any serious pain.

My wife had hers done by a regular dentist and they were still not broken through the gum. She said she'd rather give birth then go through it again...

I've heard that no matter how bad the pain, a dry socket is even worse so follow post-op directions to aviod that!

well it went fine but he deccided to only pull 2 today and have me come back in a couple days and get the others pulled. it wasnt that bad except he used a pair of something that looked like vice grips and reallys yanked on one of them and i felt that one a little bit, but all in all im going good.. for now anyways.

Each dentist I have been to has asked me if I wanted mine pulled. They are coming in just fine and I have had no problems other than once in awhile the gums around them have to move to let them in some more, but it is never that bad.

Since I have found work that has really good dental insurance now that I am older I will have saved a lot of money by not spending the money back then.

One dentist told me that I had to get them pulled or they would really cause me problems! I asked him if he would know how to pull them when it was needed and if it was really going to cost that much more? He said he knew how to do his job and that the price would be more but not that much. So I asked him, Do you have a boat? He said why? I said , I was just wondering if you had a payment that needed to be made by me or something? Man did he get mad ! I figure I must have hit a nerve in his wallet or something the way he started to defend his demands to pull them.

Now I have a new dentist that is so good that the pain you feel later is just from the needle he injects the novacaine with. When I asked him about my wisdom teeth he just said they look ok to him and if I ever have any problems he will do what ever I want to do. Truly a professional all the way.

went back to the dentist this morning, i have dry socket. it feels like a broken bone in my jaw. the blood never cloted in the hole in my mouth. they packed it with some nasty stuff and sent me on my way. by the way did i tell you im in the army and these are army dentists? you get what you pay for....

I had mine done (3) at once. I remember the assistant putting the bite blocker in my mouth, I then asked "How long will it take?" her reply, "It's already done."
She was packing my mouth with gauze.
General anesthesia is great!!!!

i had all 4 done at once..knocked me out...top 2 came out no problem..bottom 2 had to be cut out..that was the pain part but the painkillers worked..so dope up..lol.good luck

I had the top 2 taken out it was real easy.Now i have to go to an oral surgen to get the bottoms taken out.Make sure you was out your mouth after you eat so food doesnt infect the holes i heard thats what herts.

Same deal with me, only I'm 52. Still no pain or discomfort. Maybe I'll get the mortician to pull them for me.

I had all 4 pulled in the military. And they hurt like crazy. Had problems with my teeth actually breaking and having to have them drilled out.

Look out for bleeding after the procedure also.
